Clipping? Do your own?

I've been doing bib and belly for years but my Appyx has almost no hair on his chest and front of neck so there may be no point with him and I'll wait and see what coat the TB grows this year. He was a woolly bear when I bought him, but he was out in December without a rug. The mini is full minus legs and head and will stay that way, unrugged unless she's shivering, as weight control.

I find cordless clippers a godsend, so much easier than faffing with extension cords and minding out for the wire when you're clipping.

I do my own. I really dislike it! I don't mind leg trimming and hogging, but the full clips I do every 6 weeks or so year round are definitely not my favourite thing! I hate the horrible spiky hairs that get everywhere and if its hot and I sweat I hate the horrible spiky hairs even more!

I do my own because I have clippers so can't justify paying someone else, I dread the job though!

Tend to start aiming for a blanket clip and never get the lines right to end up taking it all off  legs stay on though.

I do my own, one day when I'm rich and famous I will pay someone to do it as it's my most hated job of all, but seems pointless when I have the clippers sitting there in the cupboard.

Exactly this, though I did pay a lady to clip Daisy before Cavan last spring to make sure there were no wonky lines haha....

Going to have to clip my two natives before the 32km ride this Saturday, but at this stage I think a bib clip will do.

Later on, one will get a hunter clip and the other a chaser clip (as she lives out)

I clipped my Mare for the first time last year and it was a challenge. She is very nervous and can’t be tied up and clipping took a long time. I did an Irish clip but couldn’t get all the way to her head so stopped 2/3 of the way up. I have cordless heavy duty clippers and was quite tired by the end of it all but couldn’t have done it with plug in clippers as I clipped her in a spare stable so she couldn’t escape

I clip my own, I have the clippers and like the freedom of being able to do it whenever I fancy, helpful as the older one needs regular clipping throughout the year.
What I do NOT like is the hair. Itchy, so ITCHY.
However, no word of a lie, Clipit Grooming Suit. GAMECHANGER.
I can now clip, remove the suit when done and go on to do other things at the yard, as opposed to running home in an itchy frenzy to throw myself straight into the shower. It's bumped the task of clipping up from 'Oh god why' to 'This takes a while but oh well'.

I had tried painter suits of several different brands over the years, but always found the hair would get in, or they'd rip in the crotch when I knelt down haha

I do my own both have about 4 full clips over the winter but I hate it as well because of the hair, straight in the shower afterwards . I also now do my dog as the groomer cut both of his ears so have definitely saved money by doing it all myself .x

good to know they work well, I have looked at them a few times and wondered about it.

Maybe when I finally cave in and get some cordless clippers I'll treat myself to one of them too. I'm allergic to horses so it's not just itchy, I get hives from the hair too and my eyes stream and swell up too. Nice!

I have promised myself a clipping upgrade when i sell my lorry, my current clippers are 2 million year old Liveryman Mustangs which are absolute workhorses but the air cooling means you're effectively standing in the middle of a hair tornado o_O

I've already taken the neck off one who was hot in the weather we had last week. Clipping is a grim job normally, but 100x worse in 30-odd degrees :o

I didn't clip anything last year. Will definitely trace both ponies and probably the mare too this year. I hate doing it, it's not a fun job, but I don't have the money to pay (or rather, I have better uses for that money!) and I may as well do it myself.

Thats what mine are lol , you end up eating the hair

I usually do my own chaser clips all round as they live out but my clippers then borrowed clippers went bang next to the old girls ears so she is not keen now. Was clipping the old boys legs as he has mites with Kitten trying to help or steal the clippers so dont think the noise fazed her much

can't fault the quality, mine were second hand when I got them and I've had them 15 years... they will clip a yak without complaining. but the hair, oh, the hair in your face, ughhhhh.

Three words: Dental Face Shield
Best-Disposable-Dental-Face-Shield.jpg

I bought one of these with a bunch of replacement shields for the purpose of spraying Deosect and not getting it blown back in my face, but they also work fantastically for keeping the hair from blowing back in your face :D

When I bought my clippers 4 years ago I use to love it, got excited to do clip mine every year.

Now its a hated task.. hair in my eyeballs, up my nose, down my bra.. in my PANTS? How is that even possible with a overall on?! but £45 for a full clip or use my own, it works out much cheaper to use my own.

I'm one of the few that actually likes clipping. I just think it's a nice, soothing thing to do and the hair doesn't bother me much. I clip my own mare (full clip, but I leave the legs and face) and will also clip some of my stablemate's horses for a few bucks.

I like it too its just itchy lol

Try clipping up to 10 a day! There's places you never knew hair could get to!

I have boots, waterproof trousers, lightweight cycling jacket, buff and baseball cap on to clip so only my eyes are on show. And I still get hair everywhere!

I do my own. Works out much cheaper and I can do it when I want and exactly how I want! I will generally do full or hunter clip but if I need to leave some hair on something because it isn't in full work or is child's pony and don't want airs above the ground on a cold windy day, I'll do a blanket or trace clip. I find clipping very satisfying, much like hoovering.

I think I'm going to invest in a clipit suit. I like the idea of the dental guard but I cant stand safety glasses or anything like that, does it touch your face?
Nope! You wear the plastic ring around your head, and the shields stand off from your face, almost a bit like a welders mask. They're usually made so you can lift them up too. I like them as they don't get all humid and steam up, as they're not sealed around your face like a pair of goggles :)

I enjoy clipping - love a freshly clipped horse and putting the clean rugs on ... it’s akin to getting into a well made bed for me but the itching - not so great! As they are at home this is not an issue as I clip in the evening, rug then shower and bed

I love clipping. Been doing it 30 years, and the novelty hasn't worn off yet! I invested in a set of Heiniger Xplorer cordless clippers last year, and I've been even more clipper happy since then - Alf got clipped in the field a few weeks ago, just because I could!
I used to get really aggravated by the hair, but I seem to have built up an immunity to the itchiness now. Yes, I itch, but I can zone out of it, and get other stuff done afterwards, without having to run back to the house to shower!
I clipped a fluffy Fjord in 30 degree heat a week or so ago - that wasn't quite as much fun as usual!

I have a cob who needs doing every 4 - 6 weeks. I'd be bankrupt if I didn't do my own. Yes the hair gets everywhere - I have a dedicated set of clipping clothes right down to the underwear. Those daft overalls really do not stand up to proper clipping. But the ISH, Connie etc are all dreams in comparison - the hair is so soft and they last months!!
I've discovered that my cob is like this. I had to clip him in April (Irish), then again in July and you can't tell he was clipped, now. I'm on the lookout for manly clippers, as although I don't plan to take a lot off, the frequency and thickness of hair means I need them. They'd pay for themselves in less than 2 years if I clip every 4-6 weeks (and especially if I do him all year round).

I had someone else do the first two years with my old boy (his hair was immense and too much for my poor clippers and my inexperienced hands)
But I do my own now and have been for the past few years. My girl is fantastic at being clipped and will happily stand there for an hour and a half or so however long it takes!

We tend to do an Irish clip and that's suited us and our work load fine (we'll see about this year as her workload has increased slightly), especially if I try to re-clip every 6-8 weeks.
I haven't done her yet, I try to hold off until October but it's getting a bit ~~hairy~~ *wink* (I'll see myself out...)

(Please ignore the track marks.... they faded after a couple of weeks I swear!)

If anyone is looking for clipper deals, MVF now have Heiniger Xplorers at a great price. I've taken the plunge and bought them!! Beans on toast forever, but I get to make my horse baldy more easily (I hope!).
