Just out of intererest - no plans to breed at present!

I often joke about crossing my Warmblood mare (AES) with a Highland pony. To which someone gave me the words of wisdom 'what, so you can have a mental AND stubborn horse' :)

I love Highlands as much as I do warmblood / sports horse types as grew up with them and would like to add a highland to the family again one day.

As above I have no plans to breed let alone cross my horse with a highland but out of interest, and only out ouf interest(!) (as I do joke about it to friends) has anyone any experience or knowledge of highland pony crosses like this?

My other out of interest point would be I imagine it might cause some errrr comments from some to cross an AES registered horse with a native / highland. But maybe it does happen and I just don't heard about it...

Just curious not a serious proposition!

there are plenty of TB x Highlands out there... most WBs are high % TB anyway so not really much of a leap. not my personal fave but I have known some good ones :)

I have an irish cob x WB who has been amazing. If I was ever to breed with my welsh (highly unlikely!) I'd put her to a smallish WB :)

I have a warmblood x Connie and a few people have joked about the stubborn and crazy potential. She has days where she can be but when we're on the same page, she's fab! Also she is only young and a mare so I think that's partly to be expected anyway! :)

I have a Highland x PRE, she is 22 and semi retired now but was awesome back in the day, jump anything, do a neat dressage test, hack pony club etc, however she was tricky, opinionated, stubborn and had learnt some serious tricks before I got her! She has been an excellent nanny to many youngsters in her twilight years and can can keep anything in check! Worth her weight in gold! But not your average Highland x

Thank you for your stories, love that an Eriskay x found career in BSJA. The Eriskays I knew when younger weren't that interested in jumping but I now have one as a companion to my horse did jump a pallet gate one day to chase us when we went out - I was quite amazed and gave her respect for that, though thankfully she doesn't jump and is settled when separated now...

Thanks for descriptions too - tricky, opinionated and stubborn or stubborn and crazy are great descriptions, gave me a giggle as that's the feedback I get from others and I think I can imagine:) It's great to hear such positive experiences of them despite that!

I guess in the future it might be nice to breed a slightly hardier type out of my mare, connie or highland perhaps. I'll keep looking out for other native crosses for inspiration:)

I personally find them a bit dodgy! Ive known of a few horse x pony natives and I had one as a kid, I had a Trakhener x Welsh who stood at 13.2hh. Unfortunately he had the strength and mentality of a horse in a pony size... so not ideal as a kids pony sadly. Ive had several native x's but they were usually crossed with other natives or Arabs (which I find pony like anyway). I personally wouldnt want a WB x, but then I dont generally like WB's! I find them too opinionated, so that mixed with a highland might be a bit mental. I would consider something else like a TB x native. That might be quite nice.

Thanks MagicMelon, yeah... a friend at yard would ask me how my 'mental' mare was today..Obviously I don't agree with her (!) so there's perhaps mental there already before crossing with likes of a highland!
