Just musing, really. Just watching a programme on TV about dog grooming and there's three poodles on it, one standard and two toy. They're beautiful, cute, graceful dogs with seemingly tolerant temperaments so why do they always have to be crossed with something else? What's wrong with a purebred poodle? Why does everyone want a Poo but not a poodle? 🤔

Poodles tend to have expensive to keep, unless you go for the buzz cut DIY. As a child we had a Yorkie x poodle who would be shorn with scissors once a year on the lounge carpet, I now have a labdoodle, who has a fairly short coat and apart from a could wire brush to get the under coat out is easy, and requires no professional grooming.
I have seen a standard poodle kept with its full coat on a farm, and I always wanted one like that, but the cross for me is a better option.

Friend has just spent a fortune on a double doodle (which I had to Google), proudly proclaiming they’re 100% hypoallergenic and the most hypoallergenic of all dogs 😬.

They do look like a good cross but I struggle to get my head round why you’d pay thousands for what is in effect a cross breed. Which is probably a silly and unreasonable view since we obviously do with horses.

I didn't like Poodle crosses until I fell for my first Labradoodle😊I had been looking for a dog bigger than my Mini Schnauzers. I had looked at several breeds but none appealled.

Then I saw a photo of Lottie for sale. My heart was telling me one to get her, but my head was telling me NO. My heart won and I got my perfect dog❤️

She has the biddability of the Lab and the intelligence of a Poodle. As she moulted, she just needed combing regularly.

She also stopped me being a pedigree dog snob😈

Ive had three standard poodles since 2000…
I groom them myself and before I got my first ,I recalled the poodle guru Eileen Geesons words….…
” be prepared to spend the cost of your pup on grooming equipment for this breed.
It‘s true!

The grooming is demanding..daily brush and comb through..every two to three weeks ,a bath and clip / scissor.( 3 hours)
The advantages..
The dog does not lose coat on your furnishings,clothes..it does not have odor,I am allergic to cats ,long coated dogs,etc..the poodle coat has been not provocative of my allergies.
Poodles are hyper Intelligent.Symbiotic with their owners.Generally a pacific breed.that will train fast. but need gentle methods..no force or loud efforts.

I don’t believe that the breeding of poodle crosses is justified, both price wise and in the inconsistent results. The F1 are never homogenous ie Their coats and temperaments will vary…so what is the point?
If you want a type go for one or the other. The very creator of the x poo crosses says he lived to wish he had never created the poo.cross concept , as it was used for profit and did not fulfill original concept of a breed that would express the best of both.

Malwhit..poodle snob? Why is one a snob to support a breed?

Is a mule a horse..?No,it is a mix.

I also have schnauzers..and will likely buy another as their grooming needs, whilst specific( strip coat ) ,are less time demanding for me as i age, than my poodle‘s groom .Plus, they fit in better with my country lifestyle here in Italy .IMG_0531.jpeg

All breeds came about from crossing one with another. The shihtzu we know today came about due to a Pekingese being bred into them. Then demand for a particular type of dog takes over. It’s happened all throughout time.

I think the cockapoo became popular because of their ‘look’ of cute and scruffy. Poodles have never been seen as particularly cute household pets (I love them though and think more people should consider them), with long snouts and tight curls. People like the slightly wavier look of the average cockapoo coat.

I groom a huge number of cockapoos and they vary hugely in temperament and coat type. On the whole I think they are lovely dogs.

fabulous dogs BS in beautiful condition. A real credit to you. :)

I thought they were just toys and lap dogs until I watched one in our dog training class as it was far above both the GSD's and the collies in ability. I quickly had to change my opinion of them. :D

Scats .
what you say is true. but creating a breed took decades.
these new crosses took a few mix breedings with claims that the F1 etc, will be a perfect mix of the two breeds, with the pups showing the best attributes of the parents.…if only it were so.

Well I think poodles are cute and never been keen on cockers, I've known a couple with very iffy temperaments.

Was it The Groom Room?

I have two friends who paid obscene prices for poodle cross breeds.

Both are nice enough little dogs but not for me.

I would love, love, love a poodle, but am concerned about the financial implication of professional grooming. I assume it is not that simple to do yourself.

I would (currently) really like a non-shedding dog. I’m literally covered. Bear appears to still be blowing his coat, every time he has a cuddle, he leaves a carpet of fur. There are tumbleweed balls floating round on the floor. Every meal contains at least one dog hair. I spent ages using that weird triangle scrapy tool on rugs yesterday. ☹️

A lady where I walk has 3 minature poodles. Two black one white. They are super little dogs. Busy, tough, friendly obedient and good with other (small) dogs. I would have one in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the grooming needs. I much prefer them them to the two cockerpoos I know well. I do also like cocker spaniels but they aren't quite for me. I like my terriers :) but poodles of all sizes come a good second.

I love poodles. A lot of cockapoo owners request a look that’s “not too poodly” for their cockapoos. I’ve always found that strange, as if they deny the poodle part 🤣

We had a cracking poodle when I was young, a cross between a miniature and a toy. My brothers were so disgusted at having what they perceived as a pretentious breed of city dog that they gave him the non pretentious name of Fred 🤣.

He did have to be professionally groomed, but had what we called a 'lamb chop' so only his ears, top of head and pom pom tail left long. He made sure that he rolled in something disgusting as soon as he got back from the groomers to restore his street cred as a country dog 🤣.

A friend of mine has 2 mini poodles that she uses for film work. Both are groomed in a more “doodle” trim than a pure poodle trim. From One of their very well known programmes they are often mistaken for cocker x poodle, I have to correct people that they are pure bred poodles. It is sad that the “doodle” look is more in demand than the poodle look

There’s a woman in Cambridgeshire (I think) who works standard poodles on shoots. I think it’s what they did, BITD.
I think they are great. My two favourite dogs, not owned by me, are a labradoodle that comes in the pub and is just wonderful, and a standard bitch that used to walk on the farm back in Essex. Both gracious, polite, calm, tolerant and beautiful.
But by the time I get something that isn’t a lab the only ‘breed’ available will be a cockerpoo. I don’t dislike them but they are just everywhere.

Schnauzers are just wonderful dogs…

cinnamon…medium schnauzer…(probably my next dog)….would be an energetic, serious, low shed dog…good guard, but able to follow commands if you put in an integrated training course(absolutely needs puppy socialization).

Misst ..poodle grooming is step by step ….as pups, get them on the table for daily grooms..shave feet and face.Handle them well..brush and comb daily.,
ear cleans etc..
Next, move on to body clips and scissoring legs.
..little by little ,the groom progresses as do your skills.
The equipment costs can be alarming, but I built up bit by bit..eg moving on from human hair drier to dog blaster..cheaper brushes to better ones, human clippers to German quality ones ..etc..

its like having a baby…little steps.

My grandfather had two miniature (middle size) poodles that he used on shoots in Sussex back in the 70’s. Cracking little hard working, enthusiastic and fast learning dogs. Great water retrievers for smaller birds. A very underestimated breed.
