decrease in comp reports

Figjam - don't you dare not write reports! I find them really interesting, especially as at the moment BE90/100 is my aim for next and won't be able to go N/I for many years :p That and you get good pictures :D

I don't write reports as The Daft One has only been out three times - dressage, mini SJ and the dressage again, and I didn't think anyone would be interested in his rather amusing antics at prelim (and my embarassing efforts such as forgetting to turn off the centre line and taking a detour round C :o), although he did get his first win at the weekend :D Which I was ridiculously happy about but it still wasn't anywhere near perfect and I didn't want anyone to say 'Oh God, you're so rubbish, why are you so happy about that?' :o

I tend to lurk in CR most of all - most people who post in here seem quite level headed compared to some of the more interesting characters in New Lounge.

I've never understood this attitude. HHO is all one webpage afterall, it's not like seperate rooms or anything?! This idea that different people only post in different 'areas' of the forum is so strange.

Sorry, off topic OP! :)

I'll keep my opinions to myself in future! But (from lurking) if you post a question in CR and duplicate it in NL you will receive two very different sets of responses. And I prefer the responses in here (to read anyway).

I loved the interesting ones like ElleJS used to post but some people think they know how to ride a horse round 4* better than someone who has had the horse since a baby and so we do not get anything about the fabulous Nancy who ElleJS is now doing good stuff with.
The whole Badminton post for me summed up why people are no longer posting reports because no one knows the whole story and feels they can criticise and generally be very negative about something. I think sometimes thoughts should be kept to ones self. By all means ask questions but what value is there in tearing something apart? It left a very nasty taste in my mouth.
There are a lot more posters now and the posts move very quickly so its hard to keep up with people you know and see out eventing so FB is much easier. Under the old format this did not happen. I do not comment unless its something really good now like those people who did GR at Badminton or who qualify for something.
I find HHO really dull now. I barely post anything unless I am really bored. It used to have interesting debates, interesting questions that I learnt from etc but now its the same old stuff and nothing really grabs me. I have met some amazing people through HHO some who are incredibly good friends who I see lots. I guess things move on but for me we have lost a lot of very knowledgeable people recently through both format changes and people being small minded.

I don't do any because I am being tres virtuous and paying down credit card debts instead of 'wasting money' going to shows.
Also with the ground being so hard I don't really see the point in hammering my horses round at the moment so they are just ridden enough to keep them out of mischief!

I like reading everyones reports but I don't reply that often, it doesnt mean I havent enjoyed reading it just that I might not have anything useful to say. (and sometimes have very slow posting reply internet to say well done!)

figjam dont you dare stop

I have to say that we have had nothing but kindness and support from HHOers when posting Mini TXs competition reports. Everyone was really kind and offered lots of good advice when she had her little wobble over competiting at Novice BE. I love reading the reports on here, particularly the eventing ones and its great that people feel they can share their highs and lows with the other forum users. Do occasionally go on to NL, and have posted a couple tonight, but most of them are raving nutters (sorry all of of you NL regular contributors), and some of things that get said are lets just say a bit odd. Much prefer to stay on CR where its safe. Suspect I will get totally pilloried for this, and no, I am not a troll.

I don't think I have posted in NL since they told me I was cruel/wrong/stupid/etc. for hogging my manky old ginger mare's mane, I have never in all my time on HHO had a response like that to a thread (13 pages!!), and what started as a jovial post got blown out of all proportion! Its a good job I am actually astute enough to know not to take any notice of the NLNutters, but someone a little less err...Bold? than me would have been a quivering wreck.
FWIW contro cob is still hogged and amazingly hasn't died of neglect!
*takes tongue out of cheek*
Re: the negative feedback, I do think LEC has a point, but in all honesty we have lost some very valuable forum members, some left completely others are just too busy, but in general I think people don't take the time to read what they are typing or some folk just don't have a terribly eloquent posting style and this can come across as confrontational, and then the whole post spins into a slanging match and so on.
I actually don't care what anyone thinks of my riding/horses, but because I keep my crew at home it is sometimes nice to have feedback/support of others.

I think this new format forum is responsible for a lot of people going elsewhere. I used to enjoy the lively debates and questions raised but find any that may occur get 'lost' and the whole thing is basically less accessible.

Don't know if it is the new format but I personally think some replies are becoming more 'unpleasant'. Suspect one of the problems is that as there is no 'face to face' there are no non verbal clues to pick up on and its very easy to post something which may be interpreted in a different way to that intended and then things do or at least can escalate.

I must say having read the post earlier this year 'identifying' the various different type of 'posters' in a fun and a humerous way - I do try and keep this in mind!! SHould may be essential reading for us all before becoming a 'poster' and maybe we may think twice before hitting the 'submit' button

I know you can change the layout of the forum so the posts are in newest to oldest order like before, but its a pain in the arse and everytime you go to a different page you have to re-do it. I find the comp reports just get lost.

Also a lot of the people im friends with don't post in here anymore, and im more a dressage person, theres hardly anyone who does dressage i feel its all eventers on here.

Im not competing at the moment anyways as my horse is now in foal so no reports from me!

I used to do reports all the time when I was competing regularly, and enjoyed the support from like minded people who understand the ups and downs of competition. Unfortunately, due to my ****e personal life, divorce and resulting chronic broke-ness, I no longer have a horse lorry so am "on the bench" at the moment. I'm saving up my report as my ambition is still to do a PSG on Osk before the end of the year! :D:D That will be worth renting a lorry for! And might do some unaffiliated baby show jumping over the summer, which will be well worth a report just for the laughs and screeches involved!:eek::D:p

Gosh NJ- in that case I should give up writing up reports as "only" lower top 10 BE placings counts as a good day at the office to some of us?! :( I don't think any level is too "lowly" to report on here- the board is full of different people and horses at different levels doing different things and it's nice to hear of folk getting out and enjoying their horses, whether it's a RC walk/trot test or 4* eventing.

What I meant was, I didn't feel the need to report on me getting placed at a lower BE level. In my eyes I haven't done well enough.

I enjoy reading everyone else's reports, especially if it's an event a few of us have been to - I just don't feel my results warrants me blowing my own wee trumpet. Perhaps if I ever get a DC I might!!

I HAVE A PLAN TO STOP POSTS GETTING LOST

How about the first person to do a report for the event/comp etc titles it like this...

Badminton Grass Roots 2010

and then everyone who competed in that and wants to post their report can stick it on that thread, or if by mistake they have already done one post a link to their report on there too.

This was we just have to look out for the one post which will have all the reports or links to the ones that go a stray

good plan?....

NJ- fair enough. I guess I see the reports as a kind of "HHO blog" for me, I report on the good days and the bad days (or there wouldn't be many reports?! ;) ) and think it's a little sad that so many folk on this thread don't want to post unless it involves a red ribbon/jumping 1.20m+/doing PSG dressage. :(

I've always found CR good for sharing the ups and the downs- you can often get more out of some helpful replies on a report where stuff has gone wrong (tips, things to try, something you hadn't thought of etc) than you do a whole bunch of "well dones" on a successful report surely?

I think folk need to bear in mind Baydale's mantra- "those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"! :D It's true in real life and on here and there's always "user ignore" function! ;)

Chloe- you could be on to something! :)

How about a serious campaign to get the number of threads on each page increased?

If everyone hassled Admin, they may well cave as its a quick fix on vbulletin

I am guilty of reading and walking! I love reading all the competition reports, but feel as I dont compete much/not that great myself I am resigned to "lovely horse", "nice piccie" type comments.
I will try and comment more, no responsibility accpeted for doing your heads in ;)
Having only done some low level dressage and jumping my reports may induce instant sleep ... my last comp report would have been 'Sj clear round = cricket score but came 5th out of 5'

Hbx

There's also maybe a feeling amongst some people on here that unless it's big and impressive it's not worth reporting on. I've read some comments in reports about it was "only" a 90cm class or "only" 1m which to some people, well a lot on here, is something to aspire to or indeed the level at which they are competing ie BE Intro/PN or BN/Discovery. Comments like that aren't particularly helpful and belittle those who are indeed working at that level.

I rarely post a comp report (last comp I went to was ran by another HHO person so I really want to do a post) as I feel that I could be shot down and I never feel that confident about posting. I am going to post my weekends report once I get pics off camera as for once I have photos and i want to day thanking you again to the HHO who organised the day!

I enjoy reading all the comp reports from Spooky pony starting out his SJ adventures to Sarah Janes international adventures. I look forward to FJs updates too - I also find FJ very supportive and helpfull overall (in person not just in posts too!). I like reports which are just sucessfull on paper eg. red ribbon days but ones which show personel achievements like some1s first ever clear round etc.

I think chloe_GHE has hit on a great idea on how to keep them together and make them easier to find - I also think it will make it more welcomming to post as every1 can share the highs and lows of the day together in more of a "chatty" format.

If your reports were anything like this post they wouldn't be dull at all! Thought that was very funny (and sounds a bit like us too!)

We are going to Eridge too, which day are you going?

Main reason I don't do reports is lack of time, as it does take a while to do it properly, especially if you include pics.

OK, I shall regale you all with my next Eridge debacle then. We can place bets as to what I'll forget. 10-1 dressage test, 30-7 girth, 138-6 horse. Takers? I am there on Saturday, last up in section A (PN). What about you?

I post my pathetic comp reports lol.

Sometimes I wonder why I do as I think loads of people who know me in real life lurk and read them but they never comment, so it is weird wondering who is reading them lol and what they think of me! My OH hates it and says putting your ups and downs out in public can lead to horrid things happening but generally I get back lovely positive comments and I love writing out my reports its fun.

I like reading other peoples reports and the level of competition doesnt bother me. I like people at the lower end of the spectrum's reports because I can identify with their achievements or bad days. The reports from those competing at a higher level I love because its really nice to get a fly on the wall account of something I wouldn't have experienced myself.

It doesnt matter about the height of the jumps or the level of dressage because to a one horse nervous amature a clear round at 2ft9 or a placing at Novice can be just as exciting as a clear round at Badders to a more experienced rider and I like reading them all and everyone has to put the effort and training in no matter what the level.

I like spooky pony's reports because I remember when her pony wouldnt walk over a pole and now its jumping clear round a 70cm course. I think thats a really big achievement because that pony is obviously not easy!

I love reading Wormy's JRN and intermediate reports because they are really enjoyable to read too, like when she first got Jack and did her first showjumping on him and then doing the intermediate events and Belv and how his flatwork has improved and how she took advice on here from Kerelli about getting him trained with Tor Brewer and it worked ect ect.

I like the reports makes you not feel alone in the up and down world of horses!

My OH hates it and says putting your ups and downs out in public can lead to horrid things happening

That is very true, I also am not in the mind to post most of the things I do because, well, basically....it is opening yourself up to the verbal abuse and insults some people can't seem to help....as well as the nice ones, which is always nice to read! :D

Why get yourself stressed over things people say when you don't really know them....?

And it has to be set in context.

I used to compete and jump well over 4ft in my younger days, Open comps etc. Had a child, got out of riding for a few years, then got back into it. There is no way on earth I desire to jump at that level again! I would probably land on my head...

If someone is posting reports on BE classes....or super-sounding events...people like me 'may' think....

'My 4th place at the local gymkhana at 2ft 3 inches pales into insignificance here...so I won't bother....'..

A separate section could be a good idea, but then maybe sub-divided, so affiliated comps could have one section, and the unaffiliateds could have another....

I would be quite happy to tell you of my achievments over 35 centimetres then! :D

Various reasons why i don't post comp reports but mainly a) they don't get commented on and it dies a quick death and b) i'm not sure posting all your information on a public forum is a sensible idea.

But i'd like to!

@saratoga - Yes, as I said, it's not something you should really make a habit of, but I guess as long as you are careful with what you put.....

Avoid - 'I live in so-andso, went with so-and-so to so-and-so, saw so-and-so...'...as some people might be able to work out who you are blah blah blah..

But I would imagine '....went to the local show this weekend and..'..as there as simply millions of shows happening all over the country most weekends.....would be hard to pin-point it!

My profile doesn't say what part of the country i'm in, though I have mentioned it before, it's my way to keep yourself safe, and everyone else whould think of the same I reckon....

I love reading all the comp reports, but don't post any as I've only just started taking BB to unaff prelims and SJ... I'd like to do them when I start taking him to affiliated comps. Also, as I don't know anyone on here I kind of feel that no one would be interested! :o

I was a lurker in the old format forum, but only started posting in this one. Much prefer the old one though. Also agree that NL is full of nutters, and if you stay there long enough, you start to become one of them! Recent threads started annoying me so much, just made me really grumpy and annoyed with everyone on there!

I prefer the answers given in CR too, but feel embarrassed posting about things not competition related! Last time I tried having a discussion in NL though, it just turned into people giving me advice about my riding, when all I was interested in was how other people do things .

But if anyone's interested, I'm doing a couple of unaff prelims tomorrow - it'll be BB's second ever dressage outing, and his first on grass! :o:)
