decrease in comp reports

I don't think any report is too lowly for me to want to read! Some reports are more interesting than others, but mainly because the person writing is funny, or has an exciting writing style or posts a lot so it's a bit like a forum-soap opera and I want to see what happens next.

On the identity issue I am a nobody in the horsey world so I can't imagine anyone caring to find out who I am, so I haven't bothered to hide in any specific way. Someone who wanted to could figure it out I suppose by looking up BD records. While the rollkur debates were going on I did imagine someone might come to pelt me with eggs, but since no one turned up then I think I am safe no matter what I say! :)

I loved the interesting ones like ElleJS used to post but some people think they know how to ride a horse round 4* better than someone who has had the horse since a baby and so we do not get anything about the fabulous Nancy who ElleJS is now doing good stuff with.
The whole Badminton post for me summed up why people are no longer posting reports because no one knows the whole story and feels they can criticise and generally be very negative about something. I think sometimes thoughts should be kept to ones self. By all means ask questions but what value is there in tearing something apart? It left a very nasty taste in my mouth.
There are a lot more posters now and the posts move very quickly so its hard to keep up with people you know and see out eventing so FB is much easier. Under the old format this did not happen. I do not comment unless its something really good now like those people who did GR at Badminton or who qualify for something.
I find HHO really dull now. I barely post anything unless I am really bored. It used to have interesting debates, interesting questions that I learnt from etc but now its the same old stuff and nothing really grabs me. I have met some amazing people through HHO some who are incredibly good friends who I see lots. I guess things move on but for me we have lost a lot of very knowledgeable people recently through both format changes and people being small minded.

Have to agree with this I am afraid. I have quietened down a lot after meeting more people (most of whom have been lovely :) ) and hearing comments that had been made behind closed doors so to speak about me, my horse and the situation I was in at that point by people who I barely knew, but thought they knew everything about me through HHO.

I was also becoming far too paranoid and it was changing the way I thought about my riding.

I am aware these are more my failings than anyone elses, but for me personally posting on here used to be as Gamebird said, a chat to like minded people, an airing of thoughts and a way to get lots of different ideas and points of view. I do still get that to a lesser extent, but am lucky as I am in a fab situation with a fab group of "horsey" friends around now, some of whom I have met through HHO, and some not, so I can do my analysis through them without the paranoia ;) :)

I have started posting reports again, but I have to clarify to myself first that if anything negative was said, I'm comfortable enough in the "real" situation to take it on the chin ;) as no-one except the peple I value know 100% the stage we are at :p (most of them know better than I do ;) )

I hope HHO doesnt decline any more, but unfortunately even if it picks up, it will have lost some valuable members :(

Are all the bitchy comments by PM? I cannot say I've really seen any

However I think I am so unpopular the bitchiness completely passes me by:D

I did see OldGit get a roasting, but also saw the people jumping in to defend him!

A 'like' button is a good idea as some have said.
NO, and I repeat NO report, no matter how 'lowly' it may appear to the OP, should not be ''banned' from reports. Everyone has to start somewhere, and even if its where they finish its a huge achievement and people should be proud.
Obviously a good read attracts attention, but we ain't all published authurs!! (sp??)
Sadly online bitching does happen, its just part of 'life'. It shouldn't happen, but some people like to hide behind their computer and give it something unpleasent.

Shall we all make a pact now - reports welcome please. Followed by people who have read it saying 'well done/never mind/good luck for next time/fantastic - or even just (don't know what the min reply is) :)

I have to say that I have had some very lovely responses on competition reports - mainly after admitting there have been problems with my horse and things have improved. I guess people are more likely to respond to someone that they know has tried hard and whose journey you feel you know, rather than someone who just posts "I went to a competition and won all my classes it was great".

I must say that I have never seen any bitchiness on any comp reports at all - apart from on the OldGit thing. Also agree with the person that said that CR is a much kinder place than NL - people can be really horrible to each other there - that poor teenage girl who wants to show jump and asked advice re bitting got an unbelievable slating.

I love reading competition reports, no matter how small. I don't compete at a high level but I still feel that people are really supportive. Yes it is a shame that some people have left the forum, but there are many other great people here too so I don't think it needs to be seen as a "decline" - just a natural change of people.

I don't often post because it would be exceptionally difficult to remain anonymous after posting photos...(wish i had a bay!)

In which case I now know exactly who you are, and I had a long chat with your friends/helpers at Hutton waiting for the SJing to start. Gorgeous horse! :D Stalker, moi? :p

Sorry I didnt mean decline as in the people leaving, I meant as in the content becoming more regulated, more "button pushers" and "holier than thou" posts ;)

There are still some fantastic people on here though, a lot of them have answered this thread!! :D

Nice one Booboos! (PS- I always wanted a Zorse to take out competing purely for the double takes you'd get. I'm not sure they make the best comp horses though sadly...!)

whenever i post i rareley get a reply making you generally feel a bit unloved and in some ways hated on the forum? I know quite a few have left because of this..

Isn't it human nature to want to be liked? OK it maybe a bit 'samey' posting well done etc etc, but at least the poster knows that their report has been read. As others have said a 'like button' would be a great idea, might make people feel more wanted, come on admin help us out here:D

I always try to post if I notice few or no replies, especially if it's a comp report or similar, but I think sometimes it's just bad luck and the post disappears before anyone has a chance to do so, rather than a personal thing.

I love you! ;)

There are just so many posts that fly past, before you know it they are back on page 4 or whatever and you've missed them. It is annoying.

I love the entertaining reports no matter what discipline or level. It is fun and insightful. I would actually like to read more Showjumping reports to be honest, we seem to be lacking somewhat in those! What happened to SJ_mummy who competed on the European circuit? Her posts were so interesting. And Oldgit's eventing (or catastrophe) reports are fabulous. I love hearing about Juno's Zed and his progress from ugly duckling to swan, and Princessparkle's transformation of her talented Star from racehorse to dressage supremo. Or Weezy's recent return to the ring, or The Carthorse's talented daughter, or The Mule and her amazing girl (although sadly she doesn't seem to report much anymore :( ). It is very sad that Worried1 has been "chased away" by numpties because I was looking forward to hearing all about her return to the saddle after pregnancy.

When I put up a report, I like to get responses and hear what others have to say, even if it is just "well done" or "chin up" depending on how it has gone. Perhaps it is just a bit silly but we all work so hard and usually alone or with minimal support, which makes it so good to be able to share with like minded people who understand what is involved - even if it is a Prelim at the local riding club. That is why this forum is (was?) a community - we support each other, even if we don't always agree. It would be a huge shame to lose this but I fear it has already happened.

We'll do a report on our attempt at 2'9 sjing tomorrow if anyone fancies reading? xD We usually do tiiiiiny classes, 2'9 is very big ;) And Dan's sure to treat them like skittles! Should be entertaining, might even get videos :p
I like reading peoples reports although I rarely comment, everyone seems to compete at bigger stuff so I never really know what to say.... :/

I like spooky pony's reports because I remember when her pony wouldnt walk over a pole and now its jumping clear round a 70cm course. I think thats a really big achievement because that pony is obviously not easy!

Awww, thank you, firewell! :o ...but he's only jumping clear over a 60cm course atm... :o

I must admit, sometimes I'm a little hesitant before posting, because we're not exactly very grand with our Prelim and Novice tests and teeny-weeny SJ...but I've only ever had positive responses. I agree with Gamebird's point that it's nice to share with other horsey people, when most of the people we know in RL are not horsey. I like reading reports from people at all levels, and I really enjoy the stories that surround the competitions, such as training problems overcome, awful weather endured, ice-creams stolen by ponies... :)

i still do mine!! :D

i tend to enjoy doing them when i get home, as i like to write out about the day because it is a good way for me to run through how the day was in my own head and summarise it myself...i get a fair few replies, and sometimes cc when i ask for it..never had nasty comments so that doesn't bother me... i only compete at a low level aswell.

i do sometimes wonder if people actually care about my comp reports... but i still post anyway :D haha

i agree that there do seem to be a lot less comp reports these days though... and i think it is probably due to the new forum layout so posts disapear quickly and so don't get as many replies, so the report posters feel it isn't worth writing their reports...

i always try and comment on reports if i can, as i personally enjoy getting replies on my reports.. so feel that it is fair that i bother to read others posts and comment, as you guys take the effort with mine - plus i enjoy reading them! (whether they are low level 65cm sj or international be/bs/bd :D its all great to read!

so come on guys - keep posting them :D lets keep the forum interesting x

oh.. and to everyone on this thread who posted saying ''i don't post because i don't feel i compete at a high enough level'' or ''i don't comment on other peoples reports as they compete at a higher level than me so i feel my opinion doesn't matter''

don't be silly! :D i personally love getting even just a 'well done' from anyone, whether they are a 4* eventer/competing at 1m50 bsja/grand prix dressage or going round local unaff sj/rc etc etc.

so get those reports out there guys! and everyone try and reply on others reports - admin..please give us a like button! xx

I am another who doesn't post comp reports because of the privacy issue. If it was perhaps in a closed forum I would do. Hence the reason also that I don't have any photos as a siggy. I am sure a few people may have worked out who I am from the posts which I do but I don't want to advertise it. That said, love reading other reports, whatever level provided they are not too long or not in one very long paragraph.

I have to say that we have had nothing but kindness and support from HHOers when posting Mini TXs competition reports. Everyone was really kind and offered lots of good advice when she had her little wobble over competiting at Novice BE. I love reading the reports on here, particularly the eventing ones and its great that people feel they can share their highs and lows with the other forum users. .

TX I agree whole heartedly, have been posting re DD and her youngster out eventing and we have received really positive support and advice when asked for. :D

Figjam we love your reports don't stop.:):)

I think Figjam has hit the nail on the head when she says that the folk who put most into HHO (giving advice, commenting on others reports etc) get a lot back when it comes to putting up their own reports/asking for help etc.

I don't see that as HHO being clique-y, but more that if people feel that they know you better (horses background, other recent results or trials/disappointments) they will be able to offer better advice or make a more worthwhile comment on a comp report.

I try to comment on newer people's threads as well as those I 'know' better, but HHO is so big now its hard to read them all.

The Badminton thread didn't annoy me I have to admit, but don't know any of the riders which may be the difference. If some of the Irish riders had been slated I may have felt a lot more agrieved (as would know more of their background).

While I agree that its a little freaky to have 500 reads of a post but only 10 replies, I have never had a negative experience with HHO (apart from one person saying OH was a pony-squisher for riding Flo) so I have a much more positive (or maybe naive) view of it than someone like Weezy or KatB who have obviously had nasty experiences in the past.

I think we should all make a resolution....
Long standing members should try to comment to a post made by someone they haven't 'spoke' to before each time online...
Newer members or those who don't compete/unaff compete should reply if they read a comp report (even if its just 'lovely horse' or 'nice pics', then when they do a comp report or an advice post of their own there should hopefully be a better response to it because they won't be 'new' any more....

Crikey - I have gone on haven't I!!!

Sorry for preaching.

Fiona

I havent been on here much really.
1) as i have not been doing much and
2) because the geernal "atmosphere" on here seems to be much more negative I think!

whenever i post i rareley get a reply making you generally feel a bit unloved and in some ways hated on the forum? I know quite a few have left because of this..

I always read your reports! Whether I have time to reply or not it a different matter though! I agree with others a like button would be a really good idea :)

In which case I now know exactly who you are, and I had a long chat with your friends/helpers at Hutton waiting for the SJing to start. Gorgeous horse! :D Stalker, moi? :p

Hmm I think I figured it out a month or two back, so that could also make me a stalker. Though if I'm right, we've known each other for about 30 years  Will maybe see if I'm right at Hopetoun :) (Is it this kind of thing that scares people off posting LOL!)

On the subject of posting - well I will, just as soon as my horse loses enough weight to fit back into her trailer :D I think Kit's post was spot on, as you say lots of people have drifted quietly off and I do wish some of them would come back. But on the other hand, there are still lots of lovely people on here, and I'm sure there are more friendships to be made!

I too am guilty of only posting when I recognise the names, I solemnly swear that I will post more replies. My "like" phrase will be something along the lines of ":D times 10" cos that should meet the minimum character requirement.

I would hate to think people don't post because they think what they are doing is too small. I posted about a walk and trot test on my baby horse last year! Mostly because I was so happy to have, quite literally, survived :p but you can't get much more basic than that. And I agree that I love all the growth stories such as Spookypony, I love reading what baby horses are doing (eg KatB), and I love reading some of the bigger successes too, because it actually reminds me of the level I used to compete at, and makes me feel all excited and anxious to get back to that stage again.

I think it's fair to say that lots of people read the reports, but many don't feel like their comment would be appreciated as they aren't part of the competition riders 'clique' (sorry, awful word but you know what I mean) as they don't event or compete.

I tend to agree with this, generally.

I love reading reports, but rarely comment on them and rarely post anything of my own because I don't really feel like I "belong" in here. I haven't had a horse of my own for 4 years now, I've never competed affiliated due to lack of resources, and the odd outing I've done recently has been all unaff no bigger then 3ft.

I have posted advice and feedback before when asked for and mostly been ignored, so I figure my input is not of any value here and don't really bother.

I still enjoy reading other people's reports though :)

It's the one highlighted in pink that she has! :D So unfair, I reckon it gives her a defininte advantage in the jumping phases and they're always getting praise for their "floaty paces" in the DR! :p :D

Found her! The marvels of the internet, given google and two minutes you can find anyone:

Oh good lord...rumbled....rumbled...and rumbled again!!!
Although if i had got lots of 'lovely floaty paces' remarks FJ i don't think i'd be backward in coming forward with reports...we're scrapping the barrel right now in dressage-terms....sighs....!! :D :D

Hi ho - i'll bless you with a competition report one day....be warned!!

I havnt posted a report for 6 months at least - but, having seen people asking for comp reports, and the fact it was a 1st show on a new horse i posted a report.

I added videos last night which took hours to upload due to my camera being too posh for my computer! to have 207 views - with only 6 people posting a reply.

Doesnt really seem worth the hassle of posting / uploading.

I do think it does also depend who you are as to how many replies you get ;-p

I really honestly think that low replies are a problem with the way the forum works not and NOT a comment on the poster being less popular, or not well liked, or reporting on too 'lowly' a competition. For example, I completely missed your report and I have been on here for endless hours this week (can you tell I have a work deadline looming?). I also missed a friend's report from the same day and only noticed when she PMed me about it!!!
