Right..we're all totally sick of the dark evenings and vile rainy weather..with hideous predictions of 7ft of snow & -15 (over Christmas & pre December respectively) and so I just thought you might all like to know that according to the last two years...in a months time..on the 25th December...something special starts to happen! Oh.appart from Christmas:o...every evening will stay lighter longer, by approximately 1 - 1.5 or 2 mins every evening.. EVERY SINGLE ONE!!!! so I thought I'd just remind everyone incase anyone was feeling miserable I hope this chears you all up:D

(some places are really lucky and it might start around the 23rd but didn't wish to dissappoint or start online warfare & carrot weilding ninjas..so we'll average out & call it the 25th!)

I didn't realise it would start to change back as early as that, YAY! Thank you for this good news!

Creeps up on you! Nothing I can do about the weather..but at least its cheerful news!*tries not to lose wellies in mud as skips into field & plants as its already too dark to figure out the deep suction zones!*:D

that did cheer me up! was thinking today that I have completely lost any tolerance of the mud that keeps being tramped through my house. I have 3 dogs and 2 horses and with the best will in the world, it gets really painful to try to keep the mud out!. I went out yesterday and did just 2 dressage tests. I reckon it has taken me longer to clean up everything than it did to actually get the horse ready in the first place!

Yey, the nights start to get lighter in another 4 weeks. Lets look forward to the spring, it's really not that far away :D

I noticed this a few years ago, the dark is not as dark at four as it is before chirstmas, only reason i look forward to christmas is that its spring round the corner and more light in the evenings, and it changes quite quickly. Still raining and cold though!!

That litlle nugget of information has made me happy...I HATE MUD AND EARLY NIGHTS...just incase any of my friends happen to read this and need reminding, it seems to be all I can talk about at the moment!

Thankyou for this positive thread! I would add that every soggy dark day of winter we struggle through is another one ticked off towards spring. Things can only get better (to paraphrase the D-Ream song) !!

'feel like a wildebeast?'

:D :D :D

Yes...its particularly a Somerwet thing...someones nicked all the chalk from under the fields...they then left all the rain on and I seem to be eternally waiting for Sir David Attenborough to do a voice over from behind a hedge:D

Being of the pagan persuasion we have our own little festival for the solstice. From December first the kids decorate all the jars we save during the year with glass paint or sticking on crepe paper. These are then hung on trees, or placed around the garden and lit up with tea lights. The symbolism of bringing light back to the world.
When we moved here our neighbours thought we were nuts, but now enjoy the sight and come in for cakes and a drink too.
(I am not a tie dyed hippy though, just enjoy the world and the ever changing seasons)
(still didn't make me sound any more normal did it?)

Not for much longer. Got the waxing lady coming at 6:45 to turn me into a supermodel. So, I will be shortly feeling like a SCID mouse. Thanks for asking. :D

I count down to the winter solstice on the 21st every year. The days in theory do get slightly shorter after that, due to later sunrises, but it's the sunset times that are important to me. I'm so bleary eyed in the mornings, the sunrise doesn't mean much half the time!!

Maybe you can help me with something. I can't remember the name of the celebration! Is it Swahail?? Or similar? There's one of whatever it is in a nearby village and I'm thinking of going, this year. :)
