Hi guys new to this !

I am looking at down sizing from a horse and have seen a nice 14h 5 year old gypsy cob !
Feel she might have a but more bulking out to do and once she has a nice top line sorted

Not sure if the image worked

Any advice :)

You don't look to be in a comfortable position on her TBH,but I think it's probably the saddle?? Too small a seat size for you,but she looks like she will take a slightly longer saddle anyway so that's not a big concern (so often the problem with bigger riders on ponies especially cobs and natives is the saddle size they will take,so maybe worth double checking a saddle big enough for you won't be too long for her in the back).

You certainly aren't too heavy so realy it comes down to whether or not you feel happy on her??

If so then go for it would be my advice:)

you look fine, but saddle looks way too small for you. Her tack looks completely wrong on her, even her bridle doesn't look like it fits right. I'm pretty much the same size as you and i'd go for a 15hh min to be comfortable sizewise, but you look fine on her weightwise.

Yeh that's the only saddle they had day I went to try her , it's a show saddle not my type either lol !
It must be a 17" so what size you think ?

Your saddle is very straight cut like a show/WH saddle, and you are sat far too far back onto the cantle. Whether this is because the saddle is too small for you it's hard to tell from the pic. But what I do see is that you are very much in a 'chair' position, which could be down to the fact that you are in a straight cut saddle, and your stirrups are too short for the saddle. If that is the case, and you lengthen your stirrups to rectify that, then yes, I am afraid I think you will look too big on her.

That being said, it depends on what you really are interested in doing with her. If you want to show, then yes, it may be an issue.

On a completely different matter, she looks very upright in the shoulder.

Are you sure the saddle is 17inch? Looks smaller
You look fine on her, at the end of the day, you have to feel comfortable riding her, and as long as you do, and she's happy carrying you that's all that matters :)

I wouldn't get a saddle fitter out to a horse that I was having on a two week trial, lot of expense (especially when they try and sell you one of their own very expensive saddles:rolleyes:) for a horse you may not even keep.

Mind you I'm one of those strange people who has always fitted their own saddles (yes I know shock horror, but in the days when saddle fitters weren't heard of we all did it and somehow all our horses and ponies survived;)),so not the best adviser on that subject maybe.
If you have a knowledgable friend or livery with a good eye then am sure you could sort something out for now,and then get a saddle fitter out if you decide to buy her perhaps??

See if you can borrow a thorowgood cob saddle from someone,or even buy one from preloved or similar if can get one reasonably priced, will always make your money back if decide not to hang onto it.They suit cob shapes generally and are adjustable at the gullet so can tweak to fit.Should be good enough for you to use during your trial at least.

The seat size would worry me,17" is the biggest I use on my 14hh appy x native (fairly stocky and short in the back) and on my 15hh cob, wouldn't have thought mare in your pic would take much bigger either.
Having said that she looks like she room in that pic so I would be questioning tBH if that saddle is indeed a 17"?? I am possibly a similar build to you, maybe a bit bigger if anything but I am not perched on the cantle of either of my saddles like you are in that one.Unless it's just the style of the saddle, but I reckon it's not a 17".

Get hold of an actual 17" saddle or maybe 17.5" depending on style before you agree to the trial, and then see how you get on.You really won't be able to ride her effectively in the saddle in that pic i don't think.

Yes I was questioning this myself as my old horse was a 17" inch and it fitted me great !
I think she has a bit of bulking out to do , personally do you think I look big ?

Nobody can really truly answer that until you are sat in a saddle that fits both you and the horse.

I personally think that you will look too big in a properly fitted saddle.

Might I ask how old you are?

Only if you are younger and still have some more growing to do then personally I wouldn't take her on.

Just for reference here is me (then 18) and on my (then 5 year old 14.2) native, I'm 5ft 6 :D
Also I bought him as a 5 year old and he measured 14.2, he is now a 6 (pushing 7 year old) and measures 15hh. So he grew a bit which is something to think about?

I think that your main problem is that you seem quite leggy on her, how tall are you?

Do I think that you are too big? Not really because weight wise you are fine, however you do have quite long legs on her. So really it's a matter of if you feel comfortable on her or not.

Personally, I think 14hh is a little too far down the sizes for you. You look fab by the way, just a tad too big for 14hh.

She is a lovely looking mare. I think you look too tall for her, but not too heavy.
Because of the 'tallness' of your upper body you will feel as though you have got nothing in front of you, especially when jumping (if that makes sense?). Whether or not you mind that, is up to you. Of course she may fill out/grow a bit. Good luck, whatever you decide.

I have to agree, not to heavy but just a bit to tall. You don't seem have the girth depth. Could make riding slightly more uncomfortable. Sorry.

Hi guys all the messages are a great response , I think I'm 5'3 , she has ALOT to bulk out and also a new saddle to get !
I plan on having a bit of fun that's all to be very honest !

To be honest, you do look tall on her, but not overly tall.
I think it depends on whether she is absolutely perfect in every other way. If she is your dream pony, just 2 inches too small, then does it matter if you look a bit tall on her? As others have said, she might grow an inch or 2 yet, and she will definitely fill out a bit more.
I have a mare who is 14.2 (and a bit ;) ) hh, I'm 5ft6 and I know I look a bit too tall for her, but I don't give a monkeys because she's everything I've ever wanted in a horse, and more! It put me off a tad at first when trying her (the other horse I was considering was a 16.2hh chestnut gelding!) but I don't regret it for a second. For every brief moment of thinking "I wish she were a hand bigger", there's a million moments of thinking how perfect she is so it doesn't matter a jot that she's only got dumpy little legs :)

Ok guys , hers a few pictures of her , one of her more bulked out before she was turned away last year ridden by her owner who is a good bit taller than me

Also this is me riding her the other day as you can she has a lot of condition to come

She has only just turned 5 so may ah has a wee bit to go , plus saddle is just rubbish !

This is probably one of the nicest replies yet and has made me think a little more about what I want other than what everyone else thinks

^no one made any comments that were nasty, can I just point out. You asked for opinions and people politely have them!
If you don't care, that's great! But why ask? No one meant any offence

Agree with blitzen 100%. I look a bit leggy on my 15hh cob x and I wouldn't have chosen a horse that small, but she is perfect in every other way. No regrets here.

I don't think you look too big at all. And the mare will almost certainly grow more and bulk out a lot as she is only 5. My Welsh D grew two more inches after I got him at 5.

She is a lovely looking cob and I am sure you would have a lot of fun with her.

Not everyone wants a 16.2 plus (I know I don't!). There is a lot going for smaller horses.

I don't think you're too tall - though I wouldn't as I'm considerably taller than you on a similar sized pony! - and I reckon she will grow a bit and look far better with more topline.

However, I don't think she looks in better condition in the 'last year' photo - she takes up her rider's leg better as she is fatter - this is not an acceptable way to make the pairing look ok!

Personally, I would look for something a bit bigger - you are still growing and this pony really is at the edge of your size. I am not talking weight here! More your height. Pony does not want any bigger saddle as anything better would defo not fit him.

He looks quite young too but perhaps that is because he needs a bit of Dr Green - don't they all at this time of year!
