Do you look good on a horse?

My hubby took a photo from behind, of me riding in leggings. Suffice to say, I haven't worn them since...

No I look like an overweight sack of unco-ordinated potatoes.

BUT, the great thing is (a) I imagine that I am a cross between Charlotte Dujardin and Zara Phillips (actually more like the 2 of them stapled back 2 back but thats by the by) and (b) whenever I do see a photo of myself on a horse, more often than not I have the biggest grin on my face because I just love it! So I dont really care. :-)

I look ok on my horse, we've been together 13 years and have grown into each other, a bit like an old married couple. However I look utterly wrong on anything else....

Oh bless you, if you find the leggings comfy what about wearing a long top, I ride in black leggings but with long shirts, thankfully no one has taken a photo of me from the back!

Nope, even if my limbs are roughly in the right places, I've usually got my mouth open for some reason!

I look sh** but I don't care because at the end of the day I'd rather look sh** but go out and do things and be proud of my acheivements and have fun with my wonderful horse doing it that give a toss what I look like to the point I am willing to spend hundreds of pounds on lessons, straightening my hair and making it blonder than blonde can be, and looking like all the other size 10 blonde bimbos astride horses and never doing anything but go round in endless circles in a menage and looking pretty.

This isn't a reflection of anyone in particular that I know but this is how I see a lot of riders these days.

I'm fat and don't care :)
I have fun, I know I don't look good, but I get the job done and that's what counts to me anyway.

Haha well I don't think side on sitting is ever a flattering angle, and the way ones thighs are spread against the saddle...plus concentrating face slightly out of puff and riding hat... no, just no.

I do find it really useful to see pics though like I didn't even realise my legs have started wandering backwards so need to keep them much more forward, weirdly!

I tend to wear my most flattering clothes if my bf is going to be wielding the camera, or the hi vis vest so I can blame it entirely for any fatness!

Depends on the horse and what I'm doing on it :D Over fences, on one of two horses, I look passable. But in motion, or in pictures on the flat, I look awful! I have so many faults and no care to fix them.

My sister could ride a beach donkey and look good. She's sickening, and all the more so because she doesn't believe it!

I look fab!! I sit tall and elegent, have my head, shoulder, hip in perfect line, heels always down, my body protector knocks at least 6lbs off me and my chin strap well its like instant face lift. Unfortunatly the camera lens doen't see that

Reality is such a harsh thing

I'm with you on this. I look b-awful. And to think that once a lot of people used to ask me to ride their horses. I wouldn't ask me to ride my horses these days if it went on looks alone. But I do seem to get some of them to play a tune so hopefully, I can look ok again. I have been working on this - my legs used to be beautifully set, heel in line with hip and down, nice inwards turn but relaxed, weight in heel. I was horrified to find this is no longer the case but pleased the old adage 'a bad workman blames his tools' is not necessarily applicable because a bad saddle can make you look atrocious. Have been working very hard on this and am pleased to report leg almost back where it should be. Hands, on the other hand, and the tendency to lean forward.... Just one big Gah! Am also a fan of the headless horserider photos.

Not too bad sometimes... Although I never care how I look.

Don't think tweed is very flattering though.

Interesting that not one person has posted a pic on this thread. :p

In defense, I'd been riding for only 2 months after an 18 year break (bar the odd hack). But herewith evidence of looking bally awful on a horse. Note the appalling hands and leaning forwards, and horse totally NOT playing a nice tune in this picture (far too excited about jumping):

And here's one from 25 years ago (the grey that's BTV because she hated the double bridle but this was a whp class, I think, and she did win):

Sitting on my horse seems to make my thighs quadruple in size. And my riding hat shrinks my face, which is usually contorted into some grotesque-gargoyle mask of concentration... Sports bra flattens my chest therefore making my tum look larger in comparison... and the baggy t-shirt, although very comfy for riding in and hides said fleshy malfunction to an extent, is not flattering in the least.

So, no... I would say that I do not look good on a horse! But I do look happy :)

I did look ok when I was loaning a shire, but only because she was so big she made me look much smaller! Think I need to stick to the chunky ones!!

TBF I think we underestimate ourselves. I have a short upper body and broad shoulders, all my height is in my legs and theyre not very long!! lol

This is a very deceptive photo, taken end of March on my first lesson on my newly backed horse

Im very critical of my appearance on a horse, my Mum, however thinks I look marvellous on a horse so that's all that matters :P

Why is it then, as you are all determined to say how awful you look, that when I used to frequent shows all the riders were tall leggy slim blondes?(except me )

I'm not. Average height and leg length with very grey hair. Apparently I have a nice bum though.

No I do not! In fact a recent spate of lessons was prompted by looking at some specially hideous snaps of myself schooling. My horse feels to be going quite nicely but my legs - a little on the short side - insist on shortening themselves further. Did lots of riding without stirrups, lengthened stirrups 2 holes, worked extra hard on having horse really off my leg and not nagging. More pics at show at weekend - grrr just as hideous! Still Rome not built in a day etc

However in the background of the show pics I could see some of the other riders riding - this was a dressage show and most if not all of the riders were pretty competent and I thought looked nice to the naked eye on their horses. But caught on camera in a single moment of stillness I noticed that they all looked pretty hideous in freeze frame one was behind the movement another doing something odd with hands, another very rounded in the shoulders. And yet in motion they all looked nice - so you know what perhaps I did too!? I live in hope and will keep on working on my ever shrinking legs!

Nah I have short legs .. Scrap that I'm generally short everywhere . Hair is a mess always , some sort of stain will be present on me but who cares I'm having fun :D

I used to wear leggings for riding when they were in fashion first time round. Never realised how bad I looked (I couldn't afford jods) until my friend recently confessed that she and her Mum used to laugh at me wearing them (we are somewhat distant friends, now...).

These days I think I look ok, despite him being a midget. One way back into the yard goes past the gamekeepers shed and I can check my reflection in the windows. Titts out, tummy in and smile, as my friend once said. Must work, as the grumpy faced aforementioned keeper actually smiles and says hello, now. Might be my snazzy pick up truck, though, done up in My Name is Earl livery... :D
