Seeing riders with long hair not wearing hair nets? Call me pedantic (is that the word i mean?) but i HATE seeing riders with long hair not in hair nets, and i see it more at top level. Watching Hickstead and the Royal show hardly any riders wear hair nets - all have their long hair in a pony tail flapping about and trailing down their backs. Annoys me so much. I was always always taught to wear a hair net when competing for tidiness and for practical reasons - i even remember jessica kurten saying all riders with long hair should wear a hair net when she was the judge on only fools on horses.
It's definately my pet niggle.
Does it annoy anyone else as much as me? Anyone have any other niggles like this?x

It doesn't annoy me, but it's not something I would do. I was also taught that hair should always be in a hair net whilst competing. It looks much smarter tucked away. Over here, no matter how long or short your hair is, it must NOT touch the collar of your jacket if you are competing!

Unless I was showing I wouldn't wear a hairnet, so I can't say it bothers me at all, I don't even think I'd notice unless it was pointed out to me.

BSJA brought that rule out a while ago but that seems to have been swept under the carpet... I'm afraid I'm one of the annoying ones K&R!! Manage a plait if I'm doing Dressage but rest of the time just my scruffy blonde pony tail!

It annoys me if i'm out hacking with someone and they don't make there horse walk on and just let them slob along really slow.. especially if it's one of my horses they are riding!

It doesn't really bother me, but I still prefer wearing a hairnet, even though I do get the mickey taken out of me for it

I do know what you mean though, although I have bad hair I do make sure I'm presented to a reasonable standard.

I thought it was quite bad that one guy in the Derby went round in a water proof mac!

I agree it looks scruffy. But it doesn't bother me too much. What REALLY bothers me more is people not wearing a hat.....But I think that has all been discussed before, so I will quietly retreat now!!!!!!

whew! I thought you meant for everyday riding

I am guilty of riding about looking like I've got a beard (my hair always seems to come forward underneath my hat harness and wrap around my chin

I always wear a hairnet for competing, tied around outside with a black velvet ribbon usually.

I don't wair a hairnet for normal riding (but my hair is fairly short anyway) but do for competeing, It also bugs me when people don't walk properly on a hack as well! another bugbear is straw or shavings in a horses tail when being ridden!

Ooooh yeh thats another one that annoys me too lol anything about presentation, but then again I was always told that if a british team selector turned up on your yard and asked you to present your horse as if you were in a competition, he would be ready. When he comes in from the field/goes out for a ride/comes back from a ride he is brushed, mane and tail brushed and hooves oiled, and try and clean tack everytime i ride but sometimes don't have the time if i'm in a rush.

Gosh, I haven't worn a hairnet for years so you'd be really irritated by me. Also don't groom either of my horses to within an inch of their lives every day. I think it is best to leave some oil in their coats. And as for tack cleaning what, pray, does that involve - lol!

i hate seeing people out at competitions with hair flapping arund, even if you dont want a hairnet at least tie it into a bun or something!!
also i think the same about whte stocks and tweed jackets!"

What competition in England are you allowed to ride without a hat on?

My, things have definitely changed since I left then.

It does annoy me, I wear a haynet whenever I'm hunting or at a competition, when I'm out hunting it gets caught on a tree and rips off sometimes though, as go through a good bit of forestry at some meets

Doesn't bother me at all. I think the horse world worries too much about people looking smart, when what is really important is how well they ride and look after their horses. We should be encouraging people to go to shows and have a go without worrying about whether they have the right gear.
As you might gather I feel quite strongly about this - I'll get off my soapbox now!

See i disagree, sort of. I DO agree we need to encourage people to compete - BUT where is the harm in encouraging people to look smart as well??
And especially at top level (Hickstead is one of the most watched showjumping classes in the year) people at that level should look smart IMO.

I have long hair and I usually compete with it french plaited and tucked up into my hat, although if it is low key I may just have a pony tail. If it is champs, or jumping on teams, I usually wear a hair net. ALWAYS wear a hair net out hunting.

I saw the Royal Show earlier amd thought a lot of the riders looked quite untidy with long hair flapping around, not tied up properly (shoot me down!). I hate it - I always wear a hairnet and tie my hair up also for competing. For people that make an effort I think it looks disrespectful and looking tidy hurts no one and costs nothing. Wearing correct dress is one thing (that can cost) but anyone can look clean and tidy!

It really annoys me too when people don't wear a hairnet; it just looks as if you don't care. Even worse if it's teamed up with a shirt hanging out underneath and no gloves.

Sorry I can't say I agree with you Hullabaloo. Good presentation shows respect for the show organisers/lands owners etc and surely it's not that difficult (or expensive!) to get a hairnet and some gloves and tuck your shirt in!

Oh dear - that is me then! I seldom ride in gloves, I never tuck my shirt in and I favour a plait over a hair net now my hair is so long...

I think its fair enough for showing and maybe dressage but I really don't see the relevance for other classes. I do take your point about top level - I make the effort to look smart at work when I meet people so maybe they should too. But on the other hand if it encourages people at local level to be more relaxed I think it could be a good thing.
The main thing for me is that people have a go and enjoy themselves and feel comfortable. Then again I am a bit of a slob

It REALLY annoys me when I see people riding with no hair net! I think it looks scruffy, it looks much smarter and professional if it is done up. Makes you look unfinished if your hair is a mess.

Well yes, I should have stated that this was something that annoys me outside of competititon!!!!!!!!
Although, with regards to competition, there is of course the issue of beaglers and top hats which in my mind do not provide sufficient safety. I am glad that I choose to wear a hat with a chinstrap that is up to the current safety regs. (Esp having broken my back in a riding accident). I do find it annoying when I see people hatless on a horse or not employing sufficient protection to the skull. But there's not a lot I can do about it really.

Do you wear a body protector at all times? I would have thought that would be far more useful to someone with a broken back than a hat, surely? Can't see how a hat would help save someone breaking their back.

Yep annoys me seeing people ride without a hat, especially on unpredictable horses - i have a friend who has started training over in holland with a top dressage rider and has just bought a 4yo stallion, she rides him (once a week, the trainer rides him the rest of the time) without a hat - personally i think thats purely for fashion as she never used to be like that before she went over there. Its ridiculous and i definately think a lot of people see it as fashionable not to wear a hat - i mean give me one good reason not to?

wow that turned into a rant lol

The point I was trying to make is that having broken my back I am more aware (than I was before) of the consequences of taking a bad fall from a horse. Hence I wear a proper hat. And I always wear a body protector now. It is a pain, but I thank my lucky stars many days that I still am able bodied. Hence, I am happy to wear a body protector. It's a small compromise to make.
