Don't forget to watch Countryfile tonight - Horses and Cars

Some ideas I've had:
  1. Hurl raw eggs at the rude cars
  2. place child size inflatables with satchets of red paint near the side of the road so they get a scare (even my neighbors walking fear for their lives)
  3. chalking speed camera lines periodically on the road with a box in the hedge and a motion operated flash
  4. A sign appealing to their good nature- "drive like your kids live here" or similar

If it comes down to it and a reckless driver hurts my horse or gets me thrown, they better hope I die because if I get up they won't like it.

I think adding firm metrics (2m berth, 15mph, etc) with points and penalties will go a long way toward making it enforceable!! Especially with more riders wearing cameras.

I never have tweeted so cannot comment on their website

I too was peeved at the nice woman going on about horse riders

I had one last week and indicated well before the corner and was going round and started to turn into our drive when the driver over took the rider behind and came face to face with the side of my 16.1hh ID mare. I said can you not see I am indicating ( arm full out with a hi viz stick ) all she shouted to me was she was driving slowly. I did not comment after that, but I reported many a driver with go pro video evidence.

Drivers should be made to use a simulator in the theory test which they have to make a car pass a horse and depending how close they pass it depends on points/pass or fail. We do have a snobby yard round the corner where the livery owners are up their own a$$ and spend their time chatting and ignoring the drivers who are passing slow and courteously (myself included) felt like getting out my car and in polite words say,

** It cost nothing to say thank you but could cost your life or your horse's if you don't**

Lets face it there are some yards/ owners who are up their a$$es and they spoil it for the rest of us whether we are on a horse or car.

Dunno if anyone seen this you tube clip which got heated all because one bike rider stirred up a hornets nest by posting this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRuQzlpoGAw&t=100s

This person said next time he wont slow down and if a rider falls of or horse killed he will not stop, I see he has deleted a lot of his comments after some warned him of reports to police. So if you are near cirencester beware of this idiot. *****essexracer27*****

One of the idiots has his license plate in the you tube clip if you need it or encounter this hatred person.

Some round here wear only a tabard or nothing which imo is fool hardy

My advice to anyone riding on the road is:
Make sure your horse is kitted out in Hi-Viz.
Wear a long sleeved Hi-Viz jacket so that other road users can clearly see your hand signals and also a Hi-Viz hat band..
Take the BHS Road Safety Course as it will give you lots of useful advice and tools for riding on the roads.
Be courteous to other road users - they will remember you and be couteous again and also to other horse riders.
If riding double then try to ride single around bends.
If cars are queing behind you find somewhere safe to pull in and let them pass.
Avoid riding out when the sun is bright and low as drivers eye sight can easily be dazzled.
Ride defensively and be aware of what is going on around you.

Agree with all of this wholeheartedly. Well said Peter

Being courteous to other road users. Nice drivers will continue to be nice. I am ALWAYS nice to courteous and considerate drivers it doesn't not protect me from the others. The ignorant road hogs who put all vulnerable users at risk are not going to change their behaviour if you give them a friendly wave.

When I drive on our rural roads in France I slow down for pedestrians, joggers and cyclists this is how all drivers should behave.

I was furious with the amount of time on the programme devoted to riders being 'nice' to drivers; not riding two abreast (does this apply to police horses?), actually BHS recommend riding two abreast; riders should do a road safety test - do cyclists have to do a road safety test?

Yet again we saw the rider as the 'problem' not the behaviour of the motorist. Some sensible comments from the Mounted Policewoman.

We (CBHS members) enjoyed a private visit to the Royal Mews a few years ago. Her Majesty's Head Coachman shared his experiences of driving four in hand on Park Lane emphasising the road is called "A CARRIAGEWAY".
