Dry Dog food

Acana do trial size packs, but finding a stockist can be hard.

I would stop leaving her dry food down though, give her 10 minutes, if she doesn't eat it remove it and offer it to her again later. Keep at it and eventually she'll get the idea. Dogs aren't stupid, they won't starve themselves. You just have to not be soft! :D

She has sardines in the morning, and JWB sachet in the eve, we just leave the dry food down if she feels hungary through the day, she doesn't always eat it.

She's just running out of the bakers now, everyones put me off it. I just don't know which ones to try :-(

Nobody seems to have mentioned BURNS, is that any good ?

They do trial packs - look on the websites but often a phone call gets lots of samples.
Burns is ok but dearer and not as palatable IME.

Skinners is similar to what Welbeloved used to be ( before being bought out by a larger company) and a lot cheaper.
 
Ours is fed Burns Chicken and Rice which he likes and looks well on.

He also gets Sardines/tuna in oil, eggs and whatever meat/vegg is left over from our dinner. Gets the odd raw bone when we can get them too and occasionally I give him a raw meal.
 
Just had a quick look at the skinners range, I think she might like the rough and ready one. Now to find someone that stocks it in a shop that I don't have to buy online.

Live in Cardiff, anyone know where I can get it around here ?

Out of interest, do you feed the eggs raw ? I gave my dogs boiled eggs years ago, they are both gone now. Anyway, next morning I don't know what end the icky mess came out of but they never had eggs again.

Just looked at the Natural Dog Food website - can see why you like it. Though as I'm cat person too, AG cover both which is easier. I find like millimoo, the animals do well on less because it's a better grade.

Noisygirl - yes I just crack it over his dry food.

Prompted by a post on here I was tempted to give him a whole raw egg unbroken but then thought he'd break it on the floor which is carpet in the sitting room and wood in the kitchen so vetoed that for the moment!

2Conker - I tried to get my cats off Hills and onto Arden Grange without success the fussy sods (Cat protection league have benefited from a nearly full bag)
Do your cats have a flavour preference - i'm not keen on Hills anymore, although liked the look of Origen for my cats (off to do some research now)

& for original poster, any reason not to buy on the internet?
The company I use have it with you the next day if ordered in the morning via Fedex.
If you're out they leave it by my back door in its think black bag.

Just skint, OH gets paid 2moz so if I order it then I won't get it for the weekend, so just wanted to be able to walk in somewhere and get it, might take a look in pets at home

millimoo: that's a pain, even with little bits added slowly? Mind you, my ex-feral can get very picky over wet food! They like all of AG, well they've tried the Salmon, and Adult, chicken and rice. They ate the Lighter one, when I tried a 'diet', but werent quite so keen. As I buy a 7.5kg bag - works out cheaper - they tend to now only have the Adult chicken and rice.

Hope the research goes well; found it very interesting.
 
Feed mine Dr Johns Silver wanted it for low protien both dogs love it coats are fantastic alot of people comment on jakes coat, and Bens coat nobody could believe he was 18 years old.

My lot get Vitalin cos the oldies have hardly any working teeth and they can suck it..and the youngsters kept nicking it so if they want it they get it, and cheap as chips £5.99 15kg bag of feed place own make working dog resting, which they all love. This is mixed with raw minced meat and some meals replaced with RMB's and chicken wings. They also get rice, pasta and potato's depending what's available and what I'm having. :D

I would stay away from the ruff and ready one. Its first ingredient is Maize and it has no real meat in it.

The only skinners i would give a go would be the duck and rice or the salmon and rice.
 
Mine have Autarky which they look great on and enjoy.

They used to have Royal Canin which they would only eat if it was mixed with tinned - and got so expensive. Went up from £35ish to £48 in a year!

I'm thinking of trying Dr Johns as Autarky can be difficult to get around here and if I order online the courier that they use won't leave it if I'm out so I have to do a 20 mile round trip to collect it.....

Which Dr Johns would you recommend for a 7 yo rott who has to be kept lean, a fatty (starved according to her :D) JRT, also small enough kibble for a very elderly terrier?

^ the turkey and vegetables in a green bag is very small, I notice with JWB that the different flavours are different shapes, I'll see if I can get a sample of veteran mix and let you know (re terrier)

but JWB is very palatable soaked in warm water :D thats what mine have for brekkie!!
 
Burns for all of them, one has colitis and it's the only food he tolerates so it's just easier to feed them all the same. Is is getting very expensive though.
 
I've got 1 dog on Skinners salmon & rice and the other on Fish4dogs salmon & potato, as the skinners didn't suit him as well (wind/softer poops) and as he was previously fine on Wainwrights salmon & potato thought i'd give F4D's a try as the ingredients seem better & not much different in cost. I get both via VetUK and actually prefer ordering online & getting it delivered now to collecting it myself though P@H was PITA as they often didn't have food in stock so i'd have to check with other local branches & go there.

The rott didn't do well on JWB, unlike most of his breed he's not a four legged dustbin :) The terriers are though.....
 
I feed Skinners Duck & Rice to mine, on the days they don't have raw. If you contact some of the feed companies I am sure they would let you have samples, if you go to a big show like Crufts all the feed companies have samples available.

My staffie used to have Aurtarky but they changed the recipe a while back and didn't agree with her :(

Regarding Dr Johns, I feed the silver medal (blue bag) the gold medal is higher calories for hard working dogs!

My girl is 7 and a half and now holds onto her weight :eek: was becoming a fattie so went on a diet with Royal Canin (very small portions so we changed food) and monitored closely with Orijen (also fairly small portions and often asked for more :rolleyes:) but with Dr Johns she maintains nicely :D I often add some Naturediet and adjust the Dr Johns accordingly, but she still has a decent quantity ;)

The kibbles are rather large I do tend to add some hot water to it for Kc, but she has also lost a couple of teeth this year so prefer it to be a little softer :cool: I would say for your elderly terrier to soak it so its very soft/mushy as they are big bits and don't think they do a small bite one.
 
Older staffie who is fine is on James Well Beloved and younger staffie is on Hill vet joint food for his elbow displaysia (coupled with the catrophone injections - its working). They get this mixed with some nature diet and liver biscuits x 2 a day with me standing over them to make sure they eat the right mixes - Hills is blooming expensive and Madame doesn't need it!

Have you tried direct from fish 4 dogs, their prices included delivery now, might be cheaper

I wouldn't...... JWB made my labs bottom explode ;-)
It was so bad she got very poorly and ended up on a probiotic diet for a week to settle her back down. When I re-introduced a few biscuits, it set her off again.
Thankfully I found the Natural Dog Food Company, but she can also stomach Burns too.
