Early-ish weekend plans

Sounds like mostly successful weekend updates - healing vibes to AE and Chippers' friend though - sometimes it's the silliest things that result in the worst damage.
Had a nice hack on Saturday on a slightly fresh supercob, we are currently managing as if for PSSM and ulcers (being scoped and tested next week) so trying to keep work easy and nice but he's a bit fit to suddenly be going back to gentle walks so he bounced a bit but soon chilled out.
Sunday was too icy and foggy all day to ride, the arena was frozen and we are trying not to work in there anyway if possible so he had an in hand 20 minute walk about on a little track we have and I had a shopping day.
Tack shop was largely a success, got a new pair of ariat winter breeches in their sale, a mid length waterproof coat (I'm short and long ones just swamp me), and a pair of winter Roeckl gloves after trying on about every pair in the shop! My owner also got a pair of breeches in the sale too, so bargains all round. We got Topchop for supercob so that he's got something low sugar for all his new supplements, and he seemed to approve of that last night. However, I am most disappointed that the nice little café I remember from years ago has been replaced with a coffee machine and some chocolate bars and crisps at the till, so despite a relatively successful weekend I feel thoroughly cheated that there was no cake!

I have no idea what got into Amber. I show jumped on Thursday and she was as calm and rideable as I've ever known her but when she got to the technical arena she was just bouncing out of her skin. You know when they get turned out and leap into the air and land and buck. Well she did that during the first canter in the warm up with me on her!! She has never done anything like that before. Not with a passenger anyway. So I came off then. Got back on and she was fine for the rest of the warm up but at the first line of jumps she over jumped one of them then on landing sort of bounced sideways. And I went straight on and came off again. The instructive said it looked like sheer exuberance not malice. Shes just 'feeling a bit too well'. I need to decide what to do with her for the next few weeks.... I've broken the tibia and the talus and doc reckoned 12 weeks.

Are you in plaster? 12 weeks until you can ride again? Are you able to lunge even?

I wonder what got into her - maybe she is more unsettled than you think after shifting yards? Is she getting less turnout? Less of a herd environment? Change in hay / feed?

Not sure you have many options really - would deedee's new sharer ride amber too? Otherwise I would turn her away whilst you recover. Awful bad luck you're having at the moment

Yes she's getting less turnout. Shes on hard feed but I've stopped that now. But her feed has not changed. Shes moved around before and seems remarkably adaptable. Shes very chilled to ride at home. I think she just saw the XC jumps and thought weeeeeeh!!!

I had a bit of a breakthrough this weekend.... Friday I rode in the afternoon and it was awful. J was looky and felt like he was a ticking timebomb. Dogs were running around next door, then horses started running around, and then heaven forbid a horse walked up the driveway that he didn't know but NEEDED to be near.....

He didn't actually do anything... but neither did I which was the mistake I made. After 30 mins and some quiet work I got off and felt deflated and sad. I cancelled the hack I had planned in the morning but the lovely person I was meant to hack with said she would help me with J instead doing whatever I wanted.

Saturday morning I decided to ride so lovely person (LP as she will now be known!) came in the school and gave me some fantastic help. I need to be his leader and confident. I don't need to bully him by any means but I need to say "we are doing this..." and expect him to do it (or at least try... he is only 5!). He was looky and on his toes, and I moaned there was a flappy rug on the side of the arena and LP said "so.... he has to get used to it, and so do you".... by the end of the time we were happily trotting around on the track and forward, and walking with purpose inbetween trotting (on the track... sense the theme?) and he was listening and I was telling him what I wanted him to do. We then had a walk out up the road with LP on foot and he honestly was such a good boy, no spooks or worries, he was just happy to be out I think :)

I know it probably sounds so simple and most of you are probably saying "well yes... that's obvious" but to someone with confidence issues it really isn't. And the last thing I want to do is put my leg on and ask a horse to do something when it is "looking" at something...

Sunday morning I had a lesson and he was looky and even called to his friends to start with but as soon as we got going he relaxed. My instructor said I came out so confident and determined and he relaxed so quickly. She didn't even get on before me, I said I wanted to ride from the start.

He enjoyed 2 days of being naked in the field as well, so happy me and happy J I would say this weekend :)

Aww Dyllymoo that sounds like a great weekend .

yes it is obvious but just because you know you need to do this doesn't make it any easier. I've been having similar issues with my ex racer at home, we have THE spookiest arena at the yard and I just hate riding him at home... I know I need to get my leg on and take charge but it's quite difficult when he feels explosive!
Keep on going, it will get easier :)

Thank you. I can see some peoples eyes rolling when I say above, but I know it just needs to sink in. I need to start believing I can do it as well, that's half the battle. I am going to get him out hacking more as well as he really does find arena work hard, so will work on our fitness together xx

Oh no AE! Hope it heals soon. The all weather xc was good, Buzz loved shooting along flying over the jumps. They ranged in height from about 50 to 80 so nothing too taxing, he hasn't had a chance to properly stretch his legs for so long so he was pretty tired by the end! The session didn't end well though as my friend's horse landed in a jump somehow (she was the other end of the field to us), fell and half landed on friend who took most of the fall on her chin and leg. She was ok and had to go and get stitches in the flap of skin hanging off her chin and her leg was a bit stiff. Horse was fine! Scary moment when you hear someone screaming when they fall!
The jump was really tiny too, just shows how sometimes these things can just go wrong.

Which college is it with the xc track? it sounds great and I think we are semi-local to each other ?

Crikey AE :( :( Poor you x x x

Are you completely laid up??

Your outing sounds lovely Chippers...

I had a completely frustrating weekend to be truthful.

I held off going anywhere on Saturday because of team SJ on Sunday (and just hacked because our arena was frozen).

Then the other team members pulled out because the roads were bad (they weren't, or weren't near me anyway) and I didn't get to go :( :( I did try to organise some XC schooling last minute, but it didn't come off, so guess what?????

More hacking :(

I hope my dressage lesson this evening is still on, but I really need to do more jumping......

I really wish I HAD just gone to flexi eventing on Saturday sheep :(

You're lucky to get to school wheels, but I'm really sorry you didn't get to go to your DI outing..

Lovely pic NM :)

well I dragged OH out of his sickbed on Saturday and we got little lorry ramp done. it's lighter with the new wood and carpet, the old granulated rubber stuff was SO heavy, I remembered that from doing the floor but OH was surprised!

Horses had to have the day off as we didn't get finished until it was starting to get dark but both made up for it yesterday. Darcy managed to pull his socks up and do proper work at home for once, and Kira did a slightly more intense (though shorter) session. nice to feel like she's coming back to work again :) I've missed having a grown up horse to ride.

I've started to feed Salty a bit and think I'll have to make her a nosebag because hand feeding turns her into Jaws but if i give her a bucket the others will cotton on and want some ;) Pic of her graceful self enjoying the thistles in her hay yesterday :D

Shes just 'feeling a bit too well'. I need to decide what to do with her for the next few weeks.... I've broken the tibia and the talus and doc reckoned 12 weeks.

If you want to pick my brains any time feel free, as thats exactly what I broke 7 years ago.
I didn't do it coming off but sitting exuberant leapy things..........one was bigger and my foot left the stirrup and whopped back down onto it with a sickening crunch.

I had fun lesson and for the first time managed more good stops than bad . I lost the RL lope depart for a bit but got it back.
Amber has decided to join a gang and as such has a newly shaved eyebrow and added a distressed (torn) look to her rug and dam it I think she's grown again! You can stop now Amber please , you're quite tall enough...
Daisy is fine and has seen the dentists for a routine check up which she says is important as she's eating for two. ;)
I get to watch the boss man ride Amber next week to see how she's doing and we discussed that I might need a few lessons on a bigger horse before its time for me to ride her so it doesn't come as a shock to be up that high.
For context I'm not quite sure she's 16hh but QH are supposed to small.... Daisy is 14.1 and a bit..
Should be fun year ahead.

AE I'm really sorry you had a tumble, hope you have a smooth recovery, try not to dwell on it but I know that's not easy to do.
Im glad to see those of your that got out and about and I hope the whether is better for the others next weekend.

Roxyola - I am gutted on your behalf that there was no cake :(

I have to admit that I won on this front (though nothing else) as I got to go to my tackshop on Sat afternoon, followed by a coffee/cake and riverside walk on the way home.

I got a martingale and reins for the new pony, and some cowboy magic tail detangler.

Fiona - I know right! Flipping outrage! I am however glad you managed a little productivity out of what sounds like a pretty rubbish weekend for you.

I have to admit, I think I have a breeches problem. I did want/need some new winter ones but after a drenching the previous weekend I decided I wanted at least one pair that are not suede seat, I love love love suede seats but they behave like chamois leather in the rain and are just foul! So, I picked up a pair of silicon seats yesterday and dumped them seconds later when I spied my ariats, soft shell - tick, fleecy lined - tick, suede seat... 2 out of 3 is ok right. And it means my new coat is going to be even more useful :p
Purchase of the weekend though is the £1.75 dog toy which my spaniel carried round all evening and brought to bed with her last night

Oh no AE I hope you heal up quick.

We had a productive day on Saturday. Our dressage was terrible, very very tense, but i learnt a lot about how to manage him and hopefully I can get him more relaxed next time.

Show jumping was awesome, he was relaxed by that point. We jumped indoors for the first time and he had a good look when we first went in but jumped super. Our second round was awesome and we did our first jump off. Plus we seem to have over come our issue with fill so I think it's time to start jumping bigger jumps because the small ones are too easy.

How long did it take to get back onboard?

Good to read the enjoyable weekend outings, commiserations for the other sort. Really sorry to hear about your injury AE, both mine were sharp yesterday during the (dressage with boards) arena hire and there were no fences and no other horses at a very familiar venue! Both needed a few circuits in light seat canter around the perimeter to help them settle.

Was lovely to be able to ride them both properly for the first time since October, even the mountain is wetter than have ever known it so there has been less cantering than normal - although we still manage some - essential for Phoenix's sanity - she likes launching from the top of the hills along the tracks. & they are both out 24 /7 with limited hard feed atm.

Was a lovely day yesterday and got some good work from both of them. Phoenix did wave her frontlegs about a bit at the start when airbrakes were going off next door (neckstrap got used) - so abandoned walk and went straight to work! Canter had extra air time for first 30mins but was really pleased how both she and Reilee had not regressed too much since October.

Horse was turned out and rugged ( mid December). After a week he had settled to eating and pottering.
I was (luckily) in an aircast for 6 weeks. One week after it was off and I'd been carefully driving a few days, I roped in a friend to help, tacked up and with her holding horse on lunge line, I clambered on and we went for a 15 min walk up and down our track. I was bricking it to start with! So, 7 weeks, but soft tissue still wasn't right. I found it best to not use my long boots but front zip jodh boots with ariat gaiters as this gave me best support.
What helped my mind was that S horse had been completely let down and was not fit.

Straight after, I booked in at local riding school for 3 lessons on the mechanical horse, just to sort me out over the next 3 days.

Then I got back on S horse and slowly over the next month got out hacking, increasing time out to get us both fit again

Also, whilst stuck at home on own with crutches etc (small back pack and travel mug are your friends) I devised my own exercises by the end of week 2, lots of lying on my back on the floor and gently lifting legs, then cycling legs etc, sit ups, getting inventive, increasing as much as I could so as to stay fit.

It seems a long way off to you now, but realistically you could be looking end Feb to poss sometime in March if all heals well.
Take plenty of vit D x

Naughty terriers! My spaniel carries them about a bit, leaves them in the garden for a while, rescues them from the washer or maiden if they make it that far, and very very occasionally gets a little bit chewy about them. Usually at most she removes an ear or something that is made of different fabric to the rest of the toy
She gets most upset if any squeakers are accidentally squeaked - they are never deliberately squeaked
The only time her toys get destroyed is if she leaves them in the garden and I mow them!

Thanks that sounds good! 7 weeks post accident will be Saturday 7th March so that does not fe.too far away. Katie is meant to be doing Aston le Walls on Dolly the weekend before. I wonder if I'll be able to drive the lorry by then? The clutch is so heavy! But hopefully.

I struggled with driving but it was my right ankle that was stuffed, even with a nippy little auto car, the opening and shutting of my ankle joint wasnt fun for a good month after I lost the aircast.
Sorry, prob not what you wanted to hear x
