I have heard that this wil sooon not be available-does anyone know why?
If the rumour is true, possibly because it only does tapeworm and few people want to worm for tape without worming for anything else. Most people give praziquantel with either moxidectin or ivermectin to do the rest at the same time.
it is true. Many people do worm counts. If they have a low count but a positive equi sal test they only want to do tapeworm. Equitape is the only single wormer that does tapes.
Clearly not enough people to make it a commercially viable product.
That isn't quite true, either, strongid P (pyrantel embonate) as a double dose also does tape.
maybe not enough but a lot of unhappy people.
yes strongid does and westgate suggest it as the least worst option but I don't particularly want to use a product at a double dose that does red/roundworm etc when I have continually low counts and I only want to deal with tapeworm. Equitape is the only product that targets tapeworm only.
I have just stocked up and found the same re the expiry date. It seems that the latest expiry date is going to be oct 2018. I suppose it will get this years tapeworming over if needed and then maybe something more obvious will happen for next year. Thanks for the warning about the expiry date supsup, I'll check those before I stock up.
As I read it because we will no longer be able to use praziquantel on its own, but in combination with others such as moxidectrin we can. But that adds to resistance in round- and red worm.
I think I am going to have to use the saliva test this year - my lot have been in a closed system of grazing for many years so is there any chance that they can become infested by tapeworm other than by previously infested horses - anyone know?

I found viovet to be one of the cheaper ones.
Dammit.
I won't use Equest Pramox due to so many adverse reactions reported to be caused by it, so currently use Equest and Equitape spaced 14 days apart. It certainly costs more to dose the same chemicals separately than to give them as a single dose of Pramox, though.

My horse has been living in a closed group, with very limited travel to events. He's had "no eggs seen" on his FECs for many years now, and yet almost all the saliva tests I've done over the past 2.5 years have come back borderline or positive. I find this really frustrating because there's not much I could do differently in terms of management (poo picking etc.), and I end up shelling out £17 for a saliva test each time, plus the cost of the wormer anyway. To me, the message there is that we have much less influence over tape worm infections via management than we have over other parasites, because you can get re-infections from travelling harvest mites (either migrating in from surrounding areas, or imported with forage). Given this experience, I would not skip the saliva test or tape worm treatment.
They host the tapeworm eggs by eating infected horse poo. They then spread around and get eaten themselves by other horses. Tapeworm hatches out and cycle begins again. What do harvest mites have to do with tapeworm?
Genuine question! Ive had harvest mites on my horses for the first time ever this year and had never even heard of them before! Is this something else I need to be aware of?
Was there any conclusion to whether there is a life in an equitape dose after its expiry date of Oct 2018?
I would likely buy 1 extra dose and keep it in the fridge, but if it deteriorates rapidly after expiry there would be little point.
However I believe there will be a new product that you have to get direct from the vet to replace.
This is interesting, has your vet indicated when this may become available ? Not ideal if it's going to be prescription only though.
