I am not hurt by the comment that I doubt my horse heard me - I'm not daft - I know that even if he did hear me, he didn't know what I said - he didn't understand many english words!!
I said it to make me feel better - I loved my horse like he was my child.
I wanted his departure to be as peaceful as possible - end off.

and may he stay with you in our thoughts forever.......

and no, i'm not being flipant....

i think although everyone has got their opinions and thats what its all about, is it really appropriate to be so hard ,and slate someone for the last thing they said to their horse ? WRONG in my eyes

No, the last words YOU said to HIM were "I love you"

Sorry, am not in a very sentimental mood tonight. In your situation I would have done the same - the horse was already doped up to the eyeballs anyway, so easiest way to go.

Also, those who cremate - how do you KNOW you have your horse's remains? Have always pondered this!

[/ QUOTE ]

I suppose unless you are there to witness the cremation you can't know for absolute certain but I personally know the people who cremated Jake and they 'guaranteed' an individual cremation unless you didn't want the ashes returning.
It was expensive, £580, but worth it in my case.

any vets out there who are willing to say which method they would use by choice

[/ QUOTE ]

The practice I worked at the younger vets all prefered to inject because shooting is used so rarely now injection is available. The older vets would do either. If I were to have a horse shot I'd choose the hunt or the knacker over the vet - they have so much more experience.

With regards to method I chose injection - I have seen both many, many times but have never seen any horrors at all. There are loads of horror stories about either method but the truth us either is quick and more humane than dragging out suffering.

That really is a pointless post, and totally out of order

Give it a break!! JM has apologised for any potential hurt that she may have caused and SN68 has stated that she wasn't hurt/offended!! It was only really me that got emotional...

Aww thanks Sophie. I don't cry over him now as I went through the full greiving process - I said a proper goodbye, I saw him have a dignified end and I scattered his ashes in his favourite place.
I think the whole point of this thread is 'which is the more favourable option of euthanasia'. For me it was putting him to sleep quietly and sentimentally cos that's how I could cope with it.

We used to use Chambers at Guildford and they were really proud of the fact that owners got their own horse back (if they paid for individual cremation) The vets that used to go up to do PMs said they often saw paonies and horses waiting for cremation with presents from their owners waiting to go in with them. I got my boys ashes back - I never thought I'd want to but after 14 years it was good for me to have an end that didnt involve the knacker wagon. I didn't keep his ashes - they went out on a hillside overlooking his field.

When Becky broke her leg we had the vet out as we didnt know that at the time, though suspected it, after discussing whether it was fair to keep her alive, (she was old and lame) we decided best to PTS

vet shot her, poor girl, was her first time, she was only newly qualified

and then we had the hunt take her away

wasnt there at the exact time, as me and helen had to attempt and lead a very lame Dolly, up the yard, trying to control her as she spun and called for her friend, poor girl.

QR- i would like to share with you all one of the most awful things i've seen done to a horse which relates to this subject.

An owner I know opted for horse to be pts by injection. Horse was given injection was took a while to fall and still moved a few moments later, vet said not to worry heart had stopped and this was normal. Around 5-10 mins later a groom came to say the horse was still moving. We went to look and sure enough horse was still moving. Groom went to get vet back and i stayed with the horse. Vet came in listened to the horses heart, then put his arm into the horses rear end and twisted its intestines- the horse grunted and then stopped moving. I was truly appalled. Its put me off ever having the injection.

that sounds dreadful and i have also heard of a case where horse was shot in the paddock wasnt killed but went down then got up and tried to run off sickening to think of but i think on the whole there are not too many incidents like this thank god!

OMG how awful. Having had very little experience (thank goodness) of euthanasia, it is interesting to hear other people's experiences. I wouldn't rule out the injection or the bullet - really depends on the circumstances. Hopefully horrific incidents are rare.

I was just thinking about sending horses to the kennels. If the horse has been on medication or supplements can they still go to them? Sorry for the random question!!
I would love to have mine cremated but its the money issue unless im really rich in 20 years time!! i think i would have the local huntsman out to do the job and take them away, but then i think about how distressing it would be, to be sat at home the night one of my babies died that the hounds are all tucking in to part of them!!

What a depressing subject!!!!

Shot - every time. I would never in a million years have a horse put to sleep via injection.

I have no interest in sparing my own feelings when my horses need putting to sleep - it's not about us - it's about the most immediate method of euthanasia for the animal.

I always find it interesting that people worry about what happens to the horse's body afterwards....as soon as mine are dead...they can't feel anything so it's surely immaterial what happens to them?
I'm not having a go....I just really don't understand? Explanation if anyone's game?

I wouldn't mind sending my horse to the kennels, especially if he had hunted. I think it is part of the circle of life - the hounds eating the horse. However, it helped my grieving process to have his ashes to scatter - personal preference again.

my friend had her horse privately cremated she took it on a beach ride was galloping along and it just dropped dead underneath her suffered a massive heart attack.once it had been cremated she recieved a lovely wooden box with its ashes in and a little name plate on the top.she was over the moon that she could put them on the fire place and cherish them forever. Then two days later there was a knock at the door ,delivery guy on the door step with huge cardboard box. When she opened it she found it was the rest of her horses ashes not nice!!!!
