Are there any other vets that could give a second opinion? It’s good that you’ve antibiotics but in my experience pyometra needs urgent attention.

You weren’t to know. We rely on professionals. I’ve only had one bitch with a pyo and in spite of the risk they operated the same day as an emergency. I agree with the breeder, good luck.

I would maybe be trying to find a different vet, if a couple of us on here were concerned about pyo from your description a vet should also have picked it up in my view. I have known of open pyometras treated with antibiotics but would always prefer to just spay, though I do see the issue with her having a phantom as well. I hope you are able to get her sorted soon.
 
Good news, the operation will be Wednesday morning at 8 am, they couldn't fit it at any other time.
She seems ok at the moment, so i am not too worried.
Will keep observing her, she is acting normally, eating and running behind cats.
Wednesday seems a long way away but i am confident.
She had a jab of antibiotics today
 
Nouille is back home and doing great, she seems fine.

The vet was surprised as it wasn't a pyometras at the end, they couldn't find any infection.
They had troubles as she started bleeding a lot, her spleen is enormous and that isn't normal.

They managed to stop the bleeding but the vet wants to find out why her spleen is so big and why she wasn't coagulating....
They will be doing blood test in 10 days but he think he might come from a tick, he talked about Lyme disease....
We don't have ticks carrying it here but she comes from France and they have a lot of infested ticks.

I don't want to worry too much but as anyone experience with Lyme Disaese or Pyroplasmose ?

Great news that the operation wen well for Nouille @Janique, and that she is back home with you. I haven't had any personal experience of Lyme disease in dogs, but I think there re posters on here who have so hopefully they will spot this thread and comment. I hope that Nouille has a smooth recovery and is back to full health before too long.
 
Have no helpful experience but glad the op went well. Nouille is a lucky dog to have such a loving owner x

She is a very lucky dog.
I’ve no experience of Lymes either. I hope you can get the bottom of it.
My ex puppy farm butch haemorrhaged badly when spayed (she had scar tissue from repeated caesareans) but bounced back beautifully.
 
Up date on Nouille, she recovered welll from the hysterectomy, the vet was very pleased.

She took some blood to do some test regarding the spleen being very big and Nouille bleeding a lot during the surgery.

She talked about two possible diseases that could affect the spleen both given by ticks.

I will get the full resutls on Thursday.

I am fairly confident as she is doing so well at the moment.

I strongly believe in healers and a lady treated Nouille today , she advised me to put a violet blanket on her bed, to help
the healing. Guess, it's worth trying.

Looking forwards to Thurday, wish us luck !
 
The results are interesting, all the test are good, the blood platelets are ok so we can rule out
that she was infected by a tick.

We need more tests but the vet now think she has haemophilia from birth.

Apparently some dogs are born with it and it's hereditary

You can't treat it but it's good to know in case of an emergency or operation.

Normally, it's forbidden to breed from bitches suffering from it, i told the breeder but she said that she didn't know....

Nouille only had one litter and one puppy Ratatouille by C section ( césarienne en francais)

Ratatouille now 4 years is still at the breeder and she is trying to breed from her...

Anyone having any experience with hémophilia in dogs ?

It is hereditary and tested for in my breed, and avoided. So would get the test through a company like Laboklin.

One of the main pillars of the modern German Shepherd breed, born 1968, is though to be the first recognised (affected) haemophiliac in the breed. He died young, at 4.5 but had sired around 100 litters and his health status was not discovered until later, when his daughters began to produce affected males. It is carried in the X chromosome just as it is in humans, and can be transmitted silently through generations of carrier females.
 
As CC says no responsible breeder will use a male which is not tested clear . When it first started appearing in the breed we bred a bitch with it , only became aware when they nearly lost her on the table when being spayed .
 
I have good news to report !

After many tests and investigations, the vets didn't find any wrong with Nouille's spleen or blood.

She isn't suffering from hemophilia and her spleen is fine. Her's slpeen structure is ok too and a biopsiy didn't show anything either.

It's now time to move on and enjoy our walks again !

I am also fine after breaking a small bone in my foot and i can finally walk again !

Time to go back hunting with my wonderful, amazing and in perfect healthy Basset ! 😍

The one and only famous Nouille au beurre !

She's very like a local dog we out most days called Rosie. She is a lovely girlie but quite stubborn and likes things her own way. Very kind temprament and gentle ways.
 
Yes, she definitly has a mind of her own but that's exactly what i like about her, she can't see the point
of doing things she doesn't like.

Yesterday, i was at my dad's care home and there was a dog running back and forwards behind a ball for a long time,
she took one look at him and promptly lied down by an old lady's wheel chair with the look on her face saying :

What's the point of running like that ? The look on her face was priceless, even the old lady was smiling !
 
I must be getting senile at 55 years old but something incredible happened last night.

I was very lucky as it could have ended very badly indeed.

I take Nouille to work with me and while i am busy, she stays in a room on the first floor, she has her basket but it was the first time she had to stay in that particular room
and she was a bit stressed.

I left the window wide open as it was very hot and left her, lying on her bed, locking the door behind me.

Around 20 minutes later, someone called me in emergency, Nouille was outisde sitting in front of the house !

I couldn't believe my eyes as the window is around 2.80m high, i had left her collar on the window sill and he had fallen down and was on the ground.

I can't understand, i am certain to have locked the door and no one else has to key.

The only explanation is that either i mistaken and the door wasn't locked or she jumped out of the window...

We have a lot of foxes and cats around, could she have seens one and jumped out ? It seems unreal tbh.

She is a Basset, not Dumbo, even with the big ears !

She is fine and seems like usual this morning. Guess, i will never know, old age can be hard sometimes...
 
My young whippet once decided in his wisdom that rather than backtrack round a bridge when I recalled him, he would instead just launch off the top. A man in a tractor actually screamed, I was too stunned to even breath. He probably jumped 20ft down, landed stumbled and paused a second then bounded off like nothing happened. He had physio a few days later and not even any muscle soreness was found. Sometimes dogs do stupid things!

If you see hunting bassets they get over under or through most obstacles, sheer stubbornness makes up for lack of athletic ability!

this one is an absolute nutter! Hes just gone 2yr old and finally settled, but for his adolescence I just resigned myself to the fact that all I could do was try and keep him alive and hope for the best. The list of crazy things he did was long! He is however I suspect, going to be the best dog I've ever owned. Now hes not trying to kill himself, he just has that thing that makes them super special

I am allowed to take her to work with me but it's complicated as i share a room with my collegues and they don't have dogs
so they aren't very tolerant of smells and dog's hair.

Which, of course, i understand

I work 10 nights a month from 8.30pm till 7 am and i can sleep in the shared room from midnight from 6am, normally, i take Nouille
as she stays quietly in her basket in the room and sleeps.

In the summer, it's easy as i can leave the windows open and the room isn't smelly at all, i am extremely careful about cleaning it and leaving it spotless for my collegues.

By in the winter or with wet weather, it's more difficult, a wet dog smells and i can't really leave the windows open all day long...

I am looking into dogs sitter but couldn't really find someone i trusted enough tbh. It also makes things more complicated as i have to bring her early, the expense is also quiet high.

I can leave her during the day time up to 5h, without any problems ( never tried longer ) she is clean and doesn't destroy things, in fact, she seems happy to sleep.

Yesterday, i was away for 12h and i had 3 good friends how came by and took her out, she was fine in between, glad to see me in the evenings but didn't seems too bothered.

I am thinking of trying to leave her alone during the night from 8pm till 7.15am, my friend Erika lives in the same building and is happy to come by and stay with her for a bit,
give her a few treats and a cuddle around 11.30 pm.


Then, i am hoping that she will settle and sleep till i get back at 7.15pm.

Would you try this ? It would really make my life much easier and i feel that she would be happier sleeping at home than going to a dog sitter she doesn't know.

Sorry for the rant !

I'm sure she would be alright but I'd leave newspaper down just in case. They soon get into a routine. We've left ours for around 9 hours as a one off when mum was rushed to hospital once but normally the max is 4 or 5 hrs.

At the end of the day life is not perfect and you can only do your best which is whatever any of us can.

when partner is off work she will go from 10pm when he let's her out before bed time until 11am to midday the following day before coming downstairs from asleep under the duvet and asking for a wee and brunch. We think she has a cast iron bladder!

That sounds absolutely fine. Mine sleep from 9.30 to 7 every day with no ill effects.
