Fancy new products don’t always work!!

Black horses show the dust - never pat a skimpily groomed black horse on the bum! I've had greys and blacks mostly for the past 25 years (Spanish & Friesians) and the greys are much easier to groom. Yes, they show stains (solution: keep very clean beds, and stable sheets), but they hide dust very well, and greys look OK if they don't shine, whereas blacks HAVE to be shiny.

A coloured is even worse. If a grey looks a bit yellow they look yellow all over. A yellowish bit next to a black or brown patch on a coloured makes it look even yellower!

It's funny clipping as well. The grey hairs always seem to stick around for longer. Or maybe it's just because they show up better against my clipping gear 😂

I dont buy into the whole horse fashion thing especially those endorsed by pro riders, that means nothing to me personally. They're literally just paid to use the stuff so it doesnt say much about the stuff! The only modern type stuff I have got are safety stirrups which are lightweight (I just find them comfier and more grippy) and a super breathable competition jacket (literally its entirely mesh as I get so hot competing). Otherwise, I tend to get the same old stuff and most of my stuff is really old. I cant afford any of the fancy stuff even if I wanted to! If I could, then yes I probably would buy one of the new fancy girths which distribute weight better and definately a decent saddle (but not necessarily a fancy new one, just one that its a GP!) and a more ergonomic bridle. Id rather buy things that are more comfy for the horse. I wouldnt spend £5k on a fancy named saddle though over a cheap under £1k one as long as it fitted and did the job. I dont buy fancy horse shampoo's or anything - I use own brand Tesco's on them and make my own fly spray etc.

Im absolutely all for modernising out sport though, I love the new technology out there however I feel a lot of it is far too overpriced and its just priced usual amateurs (without pots of cash) out of the market. Horeses always were a rich mans sport though!

I've only read the first few pages of the thread- need to cut short due to lunch break. But I'm obviously a sucker for marketing 😂 I have the Haas Brushes, the pic n mix treats and normally a lot of LeMieux stuff. But I am quite a basic, make-do person. My horse(s) are my enjoyment in life and I enjoy spending money on them where I see fit. I'm not in to gadgets though- basic bridle (Le Mieux of all things would you believe 🫣) and a saddle is fine for mine. I don't do quick training fads and cutting corners. Basic feed too nothing with a fancy names and stuffed with rubbish.

Having just spent a weekend on camp at Somerford and visited the shop they have on site, I found very little there I wanted to buy! It was stuffed with matchy-matchy, blingy-blingy, skimpy-skimpy muchy-costy stuff ;-)
I did buy my now third generation pair of ariat yard boots, so didn't quite resist the temptation :-)

I think greys have more hairs compared to other colours I find them the worst to clip.

Bays are the best they are the colour of poop and mud 😆
I used to be very smug about my dark bay. But this year, she decided to increase her rabicano flecking when I clipped her, and now likes to get it all nicely yellow overnight.

I do like the Haas brushes, but I think they're just good quality brushes, rather than anything magic about coat colour. I also like my VIP pad (which I won - don't think I'd have paid that much on a whim) because my horse likes it. And I'm a matchy-matchy fiend because I love bright colours and I have a horse who looks good in most colours.

Is it matchy matchy if it's just novelty saddle pads? I'm all about the novelty, I have dragon wings and lego saddle pads for the fun of them, I think I might have a white one but my saddle pad stash is about two feet high and almost every colour of the rainbow.
I tend to get a matching hat silk and/or fly bonnet so, tragically, I am definitely sacrificing my bank account to the matchy-matchy gods. (No bandages or boots, though. Unless you count the overreach boots she wore when she was shod.)

My lego pad came with matching bonnet and boots, but neither have been worn. I could get a fly bonnet that has little dragon horns attached to match the dragon wings, but the supplier only had pony size. Ok, so I checked, shoot me.

Could I just say that there is nothing special about Equitex pads not moving? I have always removed the straps from saddle cloths to prevent them causing pressure points where they are attached, (and then because i realised they aren't needed on most horses if your saddle fits) and they don't move. I've done it with Shires, Mattes, LeMiuex and others.

Yep, I do the same.

I think you have a light hearted tone that sadly doesn't work in writing until people know you very well. Stick around, just tone down and comments about what other people can or should be writing on "your" thread. Threads have a life of their own once they are set lose in the wilds of the forum, you cant control them.

Your point about people falling for marketing is valid. My latest favourite is hugely expensive "pic'n'mix" horse treats on sale in the onsite saddlery. What's wrong with a carrot?
.

i was sucked in by these, purely thinking it would be something a bit different - picky sods won’t eat most of them! i’ll be sticking to my sugar free polos and fibre nuts🤣
