Get comfy, this is going to be long....

We arrived on Thursday in time to get the boys stabled and settled, permanent stables thank god as it proceeded to absolutely sling it down! We were both fully prepared for antics - PS for 2 legged ones, and me for Speedy Gonzales. But....they both surprised us :) Fig was impeccably well behaved and warmed up like an old hand (there was about 17 of us in a 20x50 at one point  ). CS had one grump when someone got a bit too close going a bit too fast but other than that, poifect! Got them bedded down for the night and then bedded ourselves down in a hotel about 5 minutes away (which our backs were both extremely thankful for!).

They both seemed chilled as anything on the Friday - exercised them both in the indoor first thing, and then did half and half indoor and outdoor in the evening. CS has one freak out moment, which scared the steward ****less. Fig was erm, more than a little tense in the outdoor....really doesn't like food vans it appears :o He really didn't like it when some rude doorknob rode so close to us, she kicked Fig in the side and my foot out the stirrup! Passaged off (badly) without an apology!!!!! But we ended up being able to work semi sensibly (after having to use a corner to stop bless him) and he felt ok again.

Early start, wanted to do the arena walk whilst it was empty with Fig in case he was thinking of a pre race parade, and I was on at 8.42am so it fitted in nicely with my double warm up. He neighed lots :p but didn't look at anything so felt like we would be capable of using all 4 corners of the competition arena! Warmed up really sweetly, not as up or as powerful as he can be, but working correctly and well. Showcased some super duper mediums and felt really solid and straight in everything else.

I’m so pleased with his test – he tried ever so hard to keep it together, and really let me help him and keep my leg on. We just had one little blip in the test where he hopped up into canter for 2 strides on a trot circle, a quick pat and he dropped back into trot. The tension meant he dropped his shoulder in the corners in trot, and his mediums lost the rhythm we created in the warm up. We did actually do a free walk and medium walk, he could have stretched more into the free walk but the rhythm was good. Transitions could have been sharper, but I didn’t want to push it… Canter was a littler poll low, and not his best but everything correct, accurate and flowing.

Can't fault his performance; he was concentrating and we got round in one piece which is all I wanted :) He felt ever so grown up, and it makes me smile to think of where we could be next year!

A group of us agreed our test should get around 66/67%..... So mightily disappointed to be awarded 64.03%, with one judge pegging us on 66+% and the other on a measly 61% :( Thanks to that we missed out on going into the second round (top 15 qual, we were 17th) by 0.4%..... So really ruddy miffed but still on cloud 9 with my little pocket rocket :D

Got the chance to put a few faces to a few names :waves: One HHO-ers partner took some stunning photos of Fig in the stable whilst we stood nattering away :)

PS had the luck of the draw with a time of 11.38 on the Sunday, and decided not to do the arena walk as didn't want to chance doing so on 2 legs ;) Weather had turned a little, very windy with a slight chill but to no bother of CS, who warmed up really well. PS could get her leg on straight away and his canter was the best it’s ever been :) There were some super piaffe and passage (all intentional) offered, and he looks really strong and comfortable with what is being asked now.

Poor CS had a bit of a fright, the strong wind flapped around the banners/shop front just as he went by, so he nearly leapt sideways into the arena! But picked straight back up with a little pat and stayed with the moment and was ready for his test.

Sadly bit of tension crept in once we came down the centre line so PS couldn't keep him quite as engaged and uphill as she wanted but he didn't drop her, he stayed active and he was 100% focused which we were both soooo pleased with! Trot work was smooth and flowing, walk not his best but there was no jogging and he didn’t drop behind the contact and curl over – progress!

He popped a change in at the beginning of his first canter HP due to tension, but went straight back into it the moment PS asked. The medium canter was really free and soft through the back.
Trot work went smoothly and although walk wasn't the best he has ever done, he didn't jog and he didn't drop his poll and curl. He was just starting to let go, until they reached the track and the judge from the next arena got out her box and slammed the door shut…! Poor CS jumped, lost his balance and changed :(

But I guess that’s dressage, still very frustrating as he is so unspooky but you can’t blame him for his reaction. Settled for the changes (which is in itself progress that he didn’t throw the towel in), a real *yes* attitude but the damage was already done to the HP marks, paces and submission marks.

Ended up on 62.73% and a lovely tenth place rosette! If they hadn’t had the bobbles we like to think they could have been 3/4/5th but just wow how far has he come in the last couple of years :D

A quiet couple of weeks planned for both of us and the boys – CS has his last regional Adv Med point to chase, and Fig needs to get going with his Elems (new rules mean I need 3 qualifying sheets per Area Festival, which we can easily do, it’s just a case of being organised and planning events carefully). We are both so proud of our little ex racers, they couldn’t have tried harder and neither of us can stop smiling :)

Amazing, amazing, amazing! Photos look awesome and sounds like you had great progressive results. Hats off to you two - I always look forward to your reports because you are always POSITIVE and I really like that. Well done.

Lovely pics and nice to meet you and see CS in action ;)

My heart sank when the judge popped out of the box, really unlucky timing but v quick recovery :) Well done both :D

Well done, sounds like a great experience for you all :D How shiny are the boys?!?

I was there on Sunday for a couple of hours and the wind was terrible, the white boards looks ready to take off and the letters where constantly getting blown over, felt very sorry for the riders but I guess that's the joys of British weather!

I saw PS warming up :) I was sat on the benches on the bank, saw CS's big blaze and wondered if it was him......then saw the very glamorous rider and wondered if it was her....then saw the quarter sheet and thought, yep could definitely be them......then I saw the STIRRUPS and knew without a doubt it was them :D :D The blingage definitely stands out from a distance :p I'm gutted I missed their test but did hear their score announced so knew they'd done well :)

I LOVE the photos of Fig in the stables, especially the one with you, definitely one for framing!!

Big well done :D both horses are absolute Superstars! Just can't get over star being an ex racer he looks more classy than most warmbloods.

One question - why does fig have a beautiful summer coat already?! - so unfair!

Fandabbydocious the pair of you!!!

Kept checkIng for this report! A massive well done on just how far you've both come an exciting year for you :)

Well done, hartpury has a tendancy to put the willies up some horses - to my shame I've been bolted with round that big outdoor arena :o

I've also a sneaky suspicion you were stabled in my old stable block when I was a student there 10yrs ago - G block by any chance?? ;)

Thanks everyone :) Think Fig is getting a bit fed up of all my fussing and cooing every time I see him now!

One question - why does fig have a beautiful summer coat already?! - so unfair!

He was never clipped ;) Never grew a winter coat and moulted most of his fluffy tufts out last month. His 'winter' coat, is finer than Bruces clipped out (oh yes!) summer coat ever was!

I've also a sneaky suspicion you were stabled in my old stable block when I was a student there 10yrs ago - G block by any chance?? ;)

Yes! Fig was in G1 and CS in G3!

Ooh can't remember exact number but my stable was the third down on the left if you stood at the walker end and looked down to the lockers. One of the nicer block of stables that one :D

Looking at where his mouth is in the lovely picture with his head on your shoulder, I don't understand how high his bit looks in the pictures of him when bridled????

Amazing report, all four of you look stunning and did so well. I'm too old and past it now to have the guts to ride big warmbloods any more so am going for pony dressage so I love seeing non typical dressage horses doing so well it really gives me inspiration. Have liked your facebook page too !

Fig looks fantastic, you can really see those muscles developing. Love that pic of you two in the stable

CS is stunning as per, he looks to have such lovely floaty paces.

Well done to the both of you, what an achievement.

Very well done both of you - your horses look amazing and they just get better and better. In fact if it wasn't for Fig's MEH on his shoulder I wouldn't believe he was the same horse. How long have you had him now? :)

Fabulous results - well done! The horses look fantastic as well, so smart and they are positively gleaming! I love the photos of Fig in his stable as well, was this his first stay-away show?

it was, and he was such a good lad, i thought he might be really unsettled (and he did box walk a bit when CS was taken away) but other than that, no hysterics :)

in 18 months Fig has gone from track to Nationals, which is some record!

its done CS the world of good to HAVE to go up and down the horse walks, and to work in a busy arena day after day etc, really feel he's grown up a bit over those 4 days and learnt that acting the fool didnt get him anywhere as it was the same 12 hours later! lets hope its a long term lesson lol!!!!

Thank you everyone, some really kind words :)

Lol! And to think I wanted something 16.2hh at the least ;) Aw good, we just keep it as a pretty up to date blog, with something new happening every other day!

Ah thanks, I'm going to get it printed and framed

He was super meh and chilled! Had him since end of Dec 2011 which makes it just under 1 year and 4 months. We'll be coming up to 1 year since our first competition soon!

I was a liiiiittle worried he would be completely hyped up, but thinking about it, he would have stayed at similar set ups for racing, particularly since he continent hopped so much. He really surprised me with his attitude in the warm up and was Mr Chilled Bean :)

Well done to all 4 of you.

Such a positve report from a great trip away.

Both boys are looking really well :)
