I got to the yard last night and couldnt see my big girl Diesel waiting as she normally does, I thought she must of been further down stuffing her face, So i got my other 2 in and my friends pony that i'm looking after but there was still no sign, I walked around the field with a friend calling for Diesel and heard snorting coming from the corner gate, When i saw her i felt sick!! She had her front legs over a 5 bar metal gate and her hind legs on the other side, Her legs were badly cut, She was stuck on the gate covered in brambles and nettles and was freezing cold from Shock and the Rain. She'd been there for sometime too as there were poos everywhere (we think about 3hrs) My friend ran for help while i held my exhausted girls head up (big head too she's a 17.3 ID)!! She'd sunk the gate into the ground, Goodness knows how she go into that position. I put more rugs on her and we covered the gate in rugs so that if she struggled her legs wouldnt go through, We then called the vets and fire brigade both of which were with us within 10 minutes. Diesel was sedated and the fire crew set to work. They cut her free and i walked her back to the stable to be examined by the vets, She has severe bruising to her belly, stifles and legs and nasty cuts on her hind legs, She is on box rest and bute for the next few days but i am allowed to walk her inhand for some Dr Green.
My fellow Yardies, Vets and Fire Brigade were amazing, Everyone worked together to save my beautiful girl, I will forever be in Debt to them.

good lord, how awful for you and Diesel. Glad she got away with severe bruising and didnt break a leg. Im sure she must be pretty sore but with some rest and some bute she will be back to normal in no time. Youre going to have to teach her to open the gate instead of trying to climb over it. Full marks to the firebrigade! x

OMG I'm in tears reading that. I know exactly how you felt when you first saw her. Thank god everybody was able to help in the way they did. Hope she makes a speedy and full recovery! Bless her, she sounds lovely.

Look after yourself too, because you will feel utterly exhausted for days now, after this shock you've had.

God you poor thing, what a horrible shock. glad the fire brigade, vet and all your yard friends were so fantastic, makes you realise how vulnerable both we and horses are.

I hope she recovers quickly & is not too upset

Wishing Diesel a good and speedy recovery.

Many, many brownie points and Blue Peter badges to the fire brigade. They deserve more credit than any of us can, I think, ever give to them.

Glad to see that some fire services (such as Hampshire I believe) have now introducted training sessions on how to work with horses - including simple things such as how to put a headcollar on - as many fireman have simply not handled a large animal before - let alone one in distress. Brilliant stuff!

Glad your horse is ok, it must be an ID thing, my 18.1hh ID managed to get a 5 bar metal gate stuck on all 4 legs and was found lay on his side with the gate on top of him (don't know how he managed it) luckily he didn't struggle and lay and let the vet work on him and the fire brigade, they came straight out and got it off him with minimum stress. He managed to stand up with just cuts and bruises and walk back to his stable, few days box rest with his legs bandaged and he was as right as rain. Wishing your horse a speedy recovery

I hope you will feel like writing up this story for the Fire Service. They have Facebook page Friends of the Hampshire Animal Rescue Team as Hampshire have been responsible for training many if not all of the teams from across the UK. They are brilliant.

Hope Diesel recovers quickly, what an terrifying ordeal!!

Am sure the fire brgade would be appreciatvie of a box of chocs/biscuits by way of thank you :D

Gosh poor horse and poor you, must have been very upsetting for you both. Glad she is ok, and well done to the vets and fire brigade for getting there so quick. It's amazing how hardy they are though, i'm sure in a day or two she will be begging to go back out. My shares field mate, a little 2year old colt had a similar accident last week. Something scared him silly in the field, and he tried to jump a 5ft metal fence. He must have nearly made it, but caught his front legs and took all the skin off. Pretty sure he then flipped, and in fright ran into the field shelter hard enough to knock a breeze block out of the doorway. I nearly cried when i saw him that night, he looked so sad and sore and sorry for himself, i thought it would be at least a week til he could go back out. 2 days later he was right as rain (albeit a bit bruised and scraped still) and was bouncing off the walls waiting to go out.

So the worst is over now, and she will be back to herself in no time xx Have a gin or something before bed, you deserve it! ;)

ETS: His owner used udder cream with teatree etc in it onhis various cuts and scrapes, and they have healed up incredibly well already!

What an awful shock for you. Well done to everyone that helped you.

I hope Diesel is feeling a little better today, fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.
