First time since i lost my leg i feel good

Wow, what a star you are :)
I looked at your pictures, that first one, of you back on ebony is just so lovely, so emotional.
Ebony is stunning btw, what a special girl and a special owner :)
All the best xx

I feel ashamed that I grumble about my aching back when you have far more to deal with and have made such a determined effort to get back in the saddle.

I have a friend that eventually lost her arm following a motorbike accident - she is amazing too eventing her pony and doing as much as she can to live life to the full.

I have sent a pm with her Facebook details

What an incredible inspiration you are! Huge well done for everything you've achieved.

I don't know whether anyone else has suggested this but H&H covered some Army riding scheme the other day, for amputee veterans. I wonder if it's worth getting in touch with them? They may be able to point you in the right direction?

what an inspirational story and well done for your determination to get on with your way of life ,I really love your mare ,have you been in touch with the Mark Davies Injured rider fund ?they were set up to help people injured in riding accidents and are great for moral and financial help ,best wishes for the future

Thank you Ebony is a bit of a star but I would say that ! I did ring them they are more for helping out if I needed any adaptions in my house on the financial front, and were very good to talk down on my really down days, but could not really help on the practical stuff, thanks for taking the time to reply to my post, even today I am stunned at the amount of wonderfull comments people have made I thought it would be half a dozen at most and I am amazed this morning that every one is still reading this and saying such lovely things I really am just a Very Ordinary Girl, with a very SPECAIL Horse

Having just read your story I am sorry but I have to disagree with a point you have made. There is nothing ordinary about you and what you have achieved, that is extraordinary. Certainly makes me feel very humble when I look at what I think are problems and realise that they are not at all.

Well done for all you have achieved and may you continue to go from strength to strength

Oh and I agree whole heartedly with the rest of your statement though. Ebony is indeed a very special girl.

You are a truely strong person and if anything should ever happen to any of us (praying it doesn't) then I hope we could all get up and get on with it like you have.

Those moaners on here, maybe you'll take a good look at the stupid things you whinge about and realise there is always someone that has had it worse than you.

I'm sure you'll be back jumping and cantering around soon, think positive even on the bad days, turn the rough into the smooth.

Contact Help for Heros I know they have some guys that have lost limbs that they have been teaching to ride, maybe speaking to them could inspire you and them even more.

xxxxxxx

That's truly fantastic stuff, I wish you all the best in achieving even more than you have done already, your an insperation to ALL riders. :)

Well done you :D You are amazing to carry on the way you do I know so many people who would just give up. I wish there were more people in the world like you :) Keep up the good work xx

Must say had not thought of trying them, thought they would only be for service people will give them a try thanks for your advise x

I haven't read all the replies, but wow, you are an inspiration to everyone. You have had the worst time of it, and yet you haven't let it beat you. Onwards and upwards for you now! You really are inspirational. xx

Really pleased you're both doing so well.

I'm not an amputee but did used to ride a horse who was rehomed (long-term-loaned) to an amputee who had lost her leg in a road-riding accident. Sadly her horse died but she wanted to get back in the saddle so took on a RS horse who wasn't up to to the demands of that environment any more. Last I heard they were doing great :-) she, like you, was a really brave person.

Random thought: have you ever tried side-saddle? I don't know which leg you lost but you can get old saddles for either side because they weren't just made for ladies but for serviceman (espec. between the two world wars) etc too.

Jumping (a tiny, tiny cross-pole) to the side was pretty scary but felt amazing when I tried.

Would thoroughly recommend giving it a go - there are several ppl on here who ride to the side and will know abt getting saddles, lessons etc. I tried it at a RS in Suffolk who had saddles for either leg so-to-speak.

Good luck to both horse and rider.

You make us all feel very humble and well done to you. Never feel that even your smallest effort is not a great achievement because you have every right to feel proud of yourself. Best wishes to you and your horse x

Wow, truly inspirational...what an amazing outlook you have. I'm so glad you are feeling positive. Makes you realise that people (certainly including myself) can get down in the dumps about things that shouldn't even make you flinch.

You are such an amazing person, you should be extremely proud of yourself! Just shows that whatever may hold you back, you can get through and can fight it. Just looked at your photos and for one your horse is stunning but also, you can't actually tell the leg is false. You are an inspiration to everyone, I wish you the best in continuing riding and continuing to be the amazing, inspirational person that you are :)

You are an amazing person very inspirational it puts everything in perspective. Thanks you for sharing your story and I look forward to hearing of your adventures with Ebony x

I can believe that the RDA weren't much help - it really does seem to depend on where you are. They seem to be more keyed up to run sessions for schools on riding school ponies - which is great - but not suitable for you. My friend has a daughter with cerebral palsy who made it through to the National Champs last year but has had no help from RDA - she does have lessons with a para dressage trainer though and I think this may be the way to go for you (not suggesting that you should compete necessarily, but they can certainly help you).

BD have a list of regional trainers and there are regional training and development days. Have a look here to see where to start - I'm sure you'll find a trainer reasonably locally. I hope this helps - you're an inspiration, well done you!

What an amazing story!
You are not an ordinary person, you are an outstanding person! Well done for everything you have achieved with Ebony so far, I am sure you will have more stories to share with us!
Well done you are an inspiration!

QR - I just wanted to say you are am inspiration. I remember watching something on TV about riders with disabilities and there was a girl who lost her lower leg n she had got a leather maker to make a stirrup leather that had a pocket that the "stump" would sit in. Have you tried contacting the people who deal with the paralympics?

I have not done so as yet,we attach my leg by a quick release tie that you use for horses which goes around my lower leg and round the girth, and after my fall the other month at least I know it works thank god , but again this is just an idea that I have come up with not sure if there is any other better way to this

I'm normally a lurker but having read your post definitely thought a reply was in order, just in tune with the rest of them! What an inspirational read - you should be very proud of yourself and how far you've come already. I'm a typical 19 year old and sometimes find myself moaning about having to get out of bed in a morning so you've definitely put things in perspective. Hope to read some more of your threads in future :D

Again if anyone knows of an above the knee amputee would love to talk to someone else for any form of help they could give me thanks

What a brilliant story - I'm glad you've persevered and feel like you're getting somewhere now! :) I can't really help with putting you in touch, but to help you see just how much is possible... I hunt with a lady who is missing her lower leg (don't know the reason), and apart from not jumping she always enjoys a good full day! I also used to hunt with a lad who had a leg amputated at the knee, and he now whips in somewhere down south...

What a strong inspirational post! Wow! I have been getting back riding after a fractured ankle and have found it very hard so I can understand how even harder it will be for you. Good on you for not giving up! Onwards and upwards and can't wait to see the video's of you cantering and jumping in the future! :D

You have my heartfelt admiration - I'm sure you have had dark days, but your positive attitude is quite humbling; especially for someone as lazy-arsed as me!

I watched a news item recently where there was a slot about the horseguards using riding to rehabilitate injured soldiers, not all of whom had been riders previously. One of the chaps on there had been a lifeguard before and he had had his leg amputated above the knee. He talked at some length about the problems he had overcome to grip with his seat properly whilst controlling his prosthetic leg.

I'm sure if you gave the army a ring they would be only too happy to share experiences with you.

Good Luck hon :)

What a lesson to so many of us to keep looking on the positive side and get on with enjoying life. Go you, you have an incredible outlook on life and are a true inspiration. Good luck and happy days x
