First weekend in August plans?

Hopefully this photo works

He is by Timolin and out of a lovely Irish mare.
I've wanted a Timolin for years and always regretted not breeding my own when I had my mare and I've always followed him.
Being a flashy chestnut was a bonus and he is a lovely person too.
Only a yearling so plenty of time to watch him in the field before he does anything exciting.
First thing to do is arrange some transport to get him home!

Exciting! Good lucky with him

well done RF and best of luck today.

good luck to everyone else competing today.

Tali was awesome at the show yesterday. It was the first time we traveled by our selves but it was only 3 miles along the road so a good first one. She was sticky on the way home so I need to do a bit of work with her loading by herself.

it was a very long day. It rained a lot. Champion of the yard was supposed to be at 3 and the horse judge was still judging at the back of 4. I don’t know what she was doing as classes were small. There’s usually jumping at 2 so all showing should be done by then but she didn’t even let the last class in and just gave the cup without them going in the ring. I imagine the farmers weren’t very happy having to wait so long for the horses as their judging was done on time and were all waiting to do champion of the yard.

but anyway Tali was fine in her inhand class. Didn’t stand very still but we had to walk around for ages. And then come in. And then walk again. I was even getting pretty bored.
we had to wait a while for our ridden class and Tali was pretty happy to do something. She was really good but the rain had started again and the grass was so slippy so I refused to canter her downhill. I did a very short individual show but Tali was so responsive and did everything I asked. She was a lot of fun to ride. We came last in each class which I expected before we even got there as I know we didn’t look our best, never mind seeing who we were up against. (Champion horse being one)

She stood in her pen so well all day, she got a lot of attention from people walking past and loved the fuss. Even with the rain and long day I had so much fun and celebrated in style last night at the show dance. ? I’ve not seen Tali yet but after a hard day (more mentally yesterday) she tells me when she’s not wanting to do anything and I think that will be the case today so not going to bother with the showjumping today. Got a jump lesson on Tuesday so would rather do that as I can’t even compete for the cup as I would have to do 2’6 which is too high for us just now. Also I’m hungover ?8125C7D2-49ED-4C49-9D2B-EEA4F8FBC817.jpeg

Double clear in the RoR Int Novice at Gatcombe yesterday, finishing 4th... Which means we're back again today for another round of SJ to decide the final prize money for the top 10!

Good luck RF!!

Well done to everyone who has been out and about, and I hope the various sick notes recover soon.

Chilli was very sassy and opinionated at our dressage training! We’ve been working around an issue recently, he doesn’t fully accept my right leg. He naturally bananas to the right so I need to be able to use it to straighten him and not run the gauntlet of whether it will result in a nice step, or a push back against my leg. So we addressed that over the two lessons, and Chilli wasn’t too impressed with the moving of goalposts ?. He’s something of a drama queen!

There were some good bits and we ended with a go at half pass, which went well (as my trainer said, he’s a weirdo after all the objections to moving away from my leg 20 minutes earlier!) and it was great to see @nikicb, watch other lessons and schooling, and meet some like-minded people.

The good bits:

I've come home grinning from my RC sj/arena eventing clinic, B cheerfully popped everything she was asked, from wavy planks in sj to scarey xc fences and didn't even look at the v skinny brush! Nothing huge as we've not been able to maintain even cantering at home due to ground, all probably around 70.
We were going to go xc there as well as sj, but obviously we would have been on concrete ground, hence the change to add xc to the arena. Just great ?

No dream finish at Gatcombe today for 2nd round of showjumping - but we held on to 4th place and got to attend the royal prize giving! First two horses are well established 4* horses, and all of the top 6 riders bar me are professionals - so I think we held our own amongst them. Great class to aim for for any TB owners...

Bloody well done RF! ???

Fed up with the flies. Fin has decided he cannot possibly wear a fly mask, and there are only so many battles you can fight with your weirdo ex-feral so I've kind of waved the white flag on that one. On the other hand, the annoying buzzy flies that hover around their face (and mine) get really old, and we both get pissed off by them, so we can't really face four or more hour trail rides at the moment. Bring on September.

Hermosa wore a bear. So that's cool.

My first love is eventing but I must admit, show-jumping is a lot less hassle! Out of the house by 8 and back in before 12, having jumped 2 rounds. And at a fraction of the cost. No 3.30 alarm calls and treks across the country to spend hours in a field…. Had a fab day at my first BS event since Amber. And my first British Novice – I never went higher than 80 BS with Amber. Lottie was MEGA. Rolled a pole when jumped disunited. (I really need to get better at changing quickly) and had another 4 faults when she hesitated at the first element of a spooky double, nearly stopped an then cat jumped . She cleared it by miles but was too close to caught a pole on the way up. But I am ecstatic with her. And can see myself doing quite a lot more show-jumping.

For the first time in 35(?) years I have not acted as a steward/judge for a local agricultural show on the 1st Saturday in August.
I have stewarded for some well known names and learned a lot over the years but just before Covid started, I went to the funeral of the Horse Section Secretary, then there was no Show for 2 years.
I decided that I have done my share of standing all day in heat/wind/rain in the middle of an exposed field in return for a sandwich and an apple, so when I was asked if I would be available today, I said, unfortunately not, I have got too old now.

Eta, nearer 40 years, 1st time was 1985, for most of those years, sister and I stewarded WH classes, BSPS and adults. End of an era!

Thank you for your years of service. No shows can run without volunteers. I hope you had fun during your time in the ring and now you can have fun watching from the outside enjoying your day and wandering around the shows seeing what you want to see.

You both look great, a proper partnership now :)

Amazing! Those obstacles look so complicated, how do you remember where to go for all of them? Do you walk the course multiple times?

Congratulations, I thought that was a fantastic result. I was watching on Horse & Country at various points over the weekend and they focused on the XC. Can I ask how the extra SJ round works, since although they mentioned that, they never came back to it and it occurred mysteriously off-screen...

So the INRoR class runs in a unique format - it is the only class at the festival which has an extra SJ round. There are rosettes and 'normal' prize money for the normal three phases which we completed by the end of Saturday. Then the top 10 are invited back to showjump again on Sunday afternoon - any faults are added to your score from Saturday which then decides the allocation of the RoR/NTF sponsored prize money. This was £2000/£1000/£500/£250/£150/£100 (and £100 all the way to 10th) - so worth coming back for. In the end 1st and 2nd got reversed in order as Tom's mare had a pole down. The rest of us stayed pretty much in the same order. You jump in reverse order of merit, and we jumped straight after the Open champs, so it was a very big atmosphere and three-day-event type feel. It is a shame in a way that the class only attracted 12 entries - anyone with an ex racehorse should have this in their sights, as it is a great event, great prize money and a really good showcase for the ability of these horses to train on and do well at another job (or in the case of this lot, do far better at their 2nd jobs!)

Thanks for explaining! It sounds like a brilliant finale and it's a wonderful advert for the versatility of an ex-RH. I hope you get to return in future years and the class goes on to flourish.

Wow some fantastic results over the weekend - well done everyone

I had a very horsey 3 day weekend but quite a lot with my feet on the floor. Friday was an all day session looking at using poles for rehab both in hand and under saddle. I was by far the least experienced therapist (I'm not yet qualified) there so massive imposter syndrome until we really got stuck in with actual horses. Then you realise everyone is looking at the horse questioning it's wonkiness and how they can help - & even the most qualified can't get cocky around horses

Got back on baby cob after our unscheduled dismount and he was a superstar. Bounced into the field of doom like nothing has happened and then nearly fell over his feet heading home when he got cross with the flies. He's first up for proprioceptive exercises!

A fellow HHO member kindly let me use two of her horses for my case studies so had a lovely Saturday afternoon practising on them - both gorgeous and showed me all the yawning, licking and chewing ?

Finished off with an early Sunday pre fly hack on the microcob who barely broke a sweat so all that post injury walking has definitely got her fitness up - she's desperate for a gallop and got Very Cross at being told to stay in walk. Rain soon please.

Did the Barbury ROR class have similar prize money which Piggy French won? I do think there should be prizes at 4/5* as well as quite an achievement. Tom Mck was very unlucky with Dreamliner at Bramham in the sjing as she looks super.
I think it looks a good class.

I went to the National RC Horse Trials champs this weekend. I qualified with the team back in early June when I wasn’t having chemo on my other horse. I don’t think I expected to make it to the finals as didn’t expect to be well enough. After chemo session one, I quickly realised I wasn’t going to be strong enough to ride horse one so made a plan for her (now sold). I also made a plan for horse 2 which included get a substitute jockey in for her first ODE at the season. It annoyed me so much watching someone ride the horse and I was feeling fine that I then hatched a plan to see if I could qualify horse 2 and take her as my reserve. I could only event every fortnight between chemos so made it to Broadway which got her qualified, and made it to Oxstalls. So on the back on two 100 runs, a very green horse (last year she made it round one xc course clear at 90!) and a sick rider made it to Swalcliffe.

The week before I left, I was really sick. I couldn’t get out of bed on the Monday and was due to leave on the Thursday. I made it though. Dressage was disappointing 32 - she was tense in the mouth and with hindsight I should have ridden her in the morning not just hand grazed. Onto xc which was chunky, it was a big ask for such a green horse and I watched fault after fault. The horse was just amazing though and all my hard work paid off, except I managed to flop off xc losing my balance. Pretty upsetting but my cardiovascular is screwed so I get weak under exertion and it chose that day to totally fail. That was the end of my champs.

I have hatched a new plan but my friend who runs cancer drug trials has told me to be realistic…. I now have 10 days chemo free so going to try and sort my cardio and strength out as much as possible. Then I go onto new chemo…. So watch this space!
