Answer for Crisos on Brickendon:

"North Road CC time trial is Tuesday evenings (through to end August). Lots of riders.Other events are on the LNDC site here:
http://www.lndc.org.uk/

That's timetrials only, not road races or sportives.

Thanks for that. I was out hacking last night, Tuesday evening, and noted how there were very few cyclists out and nothing organised. Maybe the heat made them wimp out ;)

Dont you meen 3 horse riders abreast ,galloping flat out down the road. That is far more a comparable situation.

Uhm like the hunt sometimes come down the lane outside my house. Now locals all know in advance but a visiting tourist would have no warning at all.

Having been in what could have been a very nasty accident because of cyclists I've had less time for them which I know is wrong because there are good, law abiding ones out there who take the time to slow down but sadly these are overshadowed by the others :( Fortunately in my case I was unmounted and the injury was to the cyclist but I had to spend a lot of time getting my pony used to traffic again.

In the article it says that they knew the bike race was taking place that day but were unsure of the time. Surely for the sake of one day the horses could have gone in the school, a different route or had a day off. Why go out on the route the bikes would be taking that day if you didn't know the time.

If you don't have a school; the route the bikes use is the road at the top of your yard and they are there some evenings, weekends and bank holidays, not always possible to avoid if you work.

I went and looked at link suechoccy sent, the club near me to avoid traffic " use quiet roads in the country as much as possible", so exactly the same roads that riders use for the same reason.

I have also met organised groups on bridlepaths.

My horse is very good with them, but if I were to avoid them, then it would mean not riding. This is not a case of a one off every month but regular events several times a week.

Cyclists must have more respect for horses on the road! A lady at my yard was hacking down a quiet road when a group of cyclists came up behind up at a ridiculous speed with no care or thought for the horse. He freaked out, slipped and fell onto the road, luckily throwing the rider clear. The horse then galloped home crossing a very busy road on the way. The cyclists hadnt even bothered to stop! The horse now has a broken tibia in his hind leg, just had an operation and 3 months boxrest with no guarantee that he will be able to be riden ever again.
If cyclists could just take 5 seconds to ensure that it was safe to pass then there would be less accidents! I think that animal safety should be a key part of the driving test then more people would be educated about it!

Its time some of these thoughtless gits were being prosecuted for driving without due care and attention, the highway code highlights horses are unpredictable and to be guided by the signals and indications of the rider, id wager the bulk of these cyclists dont have public liability insurance, and we wonder why more and more folks are wearing head cams;)

My horse is brilliant with cyclists which is lucky because he needs to be, time trials are held almost weekly and also huge groups of cyclists.
My gripe though is only with the time trials, I find the cyclist so focused on getting the best time and slowing down for nothing, they take horrendous risks squeezing between my horse and a small gap between a car going the other way, no warning and at huge risk!

As far as the groups go I do not begrudge them, they are on Tuesdays or Thursday and if my horse was not so good with them then I would avoid the road on these days

A time trial is a race, just rather than racing other people you are racing the clock & your previous best time. No difference.
