Ah, now I posted that I felt better about slaughterhouses...but I'd probably PTS at home too.

Definitely changed my perception of slaughterhouses - much better than I thought it would be. Personally, though, I would still choose to have my own horses put down at home.

I'v been to the local slaughterhouse (where they don't do horses) and thought that okay, and now feel absolutely fine about horse ones.

Thankyou LindaCorby!

have taken two horses to slaughterhouse , but would by preference have my own put down at home , saying that i found the staff proffesional and sympathetic to the horse and owner and i have no problem with british slaughterhouses , abroad is a whole different subject and i would not ever take a horse to any in europe

Hasn't changed my view on slaughterhouses...I always thought them necessary and preferable to dnagerous horses doing the rounds or old horses abandoned in fields etc. There is nothing at all nice about a horse being PTS wherever it may be, but it is necessary.
I would NEVER choose to send any of mine to a slaughter house and can't understand anyone that does tbh.. I think anyone that is able should PTS at home..

I personally would never ever send any horse to the knackers yard. Mine will be PTS and buried here at home.

In this case, I definately think all horses should be PTS at home and their bodies taken to the knackers yard. I think its our responsibility to see the horse through to the end and not leave it to someone else to kill the horse any way they please.

I voted for other. My views have not changed about slaughterhouses. I still find them distasteful in my own opinion however I don't agree with the above statement that they should be banned.
Slaughterhouses have their place in society even though I do feel a little uneasy in saying that.
For some people it can be the only viable option to have horses or any animals killed for that matter since there may not be anyone suitably qualified at home to do the job in a humane manner.
I don't think anyone has the right to say someone is wrong or right in whatever choice they make.
Personally I would not send any of mine to a slaughter house and neither would I use a hunt kennels to dispatch a horse either. The latter is mainly because I dislike the idea of a horse of mine ending up in the stomachs of pack hounds.
However from the killing point of view many hunt staff are probably better qualified and quicker in their approach (perhaps more humane in some cases) of killing a horse than slaughterhouse staff.
My own personal choice - which has not changed after watching the video - is that if and when the time comes both mine will be pts intravenously by a vet.

After watching the video of Potters ( am I correct in assuming this is the one with the pregnant looking mare?) I was surprised at how calm the horses did look. Nothing like the fear and panic depicted by some videos I have seen of foreign slaughterhouse methods which were very upsetting.
The horses in the Potters video were all shot cleanly and looked to die virtually instantaneously which allayed my fears of them suffering immediately prior to their death. Unlike other slaughterhouse methods I had watched in which a knife was used to kill a horse. That horse did suffer because the killing method was extreme- out of date- and totally unnecessary and cruel since there was no guarantee that the horse could be killed cleanly and swiftly. Other methods I have seen involving what looked like a bolt delivered from a seemingly pneumatic hand held device was cruel and crude. One video depicted a horse being shot several times before being eventually killed and yes that horse did suffer.
In the Potters video while I don't personally like guns they were used to good effect and the aim was perfect and as the horse fell it was most probably dead before it hit the ground.
The only two scenes I found distasteful was the shots of the chestnut horse (mare?, didn't have sound on so no idea if their was commentary or not) that was left outside for several minutes. The horse was immobilised on the hard floor and its injuries or condition that severe it was unable to stand. I am not aware of the events leading up to the horse being left in that state and neither do I know what the operations of the slaughterhouse were that day so my comments cannot be a true judgement of the Potters staff.
The horse was eventually dispatched by a member of staff with a gun after several shots of the man pacing up and down and seemingly making phone calls.
In my opinion of the events was that this horse was indeed suffering and the point of blame should lie with the owners or carers of this horse. Assuming this horse had been transported to the slaughterhouse then the horse in question should never have been taken to the slaughterhouse. It should have put down at the owner's yard/stables or wherever the horse was when the injury occurred or when the horse became too debilitated that killing it was the only viable option. Frankly I was appalled to witness such a scene and I feel strongly that assuming I am correct in my supposition of events that the owner/carer should have been prosecuted for causing unnecessary suffering.
Another scene which appalled me was the case of the seemingly pregnant mare.
Before anyone shouts out that pregnant cows are slaughtered yes that may be so. However I would only condone that if the cow was severely injured, had a contagious disease ( i.e. F & M) or an illness meant she was suffering and had no viable chances of pulling through. To kill a pregnant cow for any other reason is in my opinion as wrong as it is to kill a pregnant mare with no justifiable reason.
The mare in the video did look pregnant and on appearances seemed sound. Unless someone else knows otherwise as to why this mare was killed in this manner I believe it was very wrong.
If there was a completely justifiable reason for her slaughter then fair enough, but otherwise it was disgusting!

I am the other way around...I wanted mine to go to the Hunt precisely because I wanted him to "end up in the stomach of the hounds". For my Welshy, his absolute favourite thing to do is hunt so I wanted him/me to give something back and go back to where he was happiest. His loan contract (for the loaners) states that unless he is in too much pain to wait for the Huntsman to come and requires the vet to PTS, he should be dispatched by the Hunt should he have to be PTS.

I couldn't find the right option really - I knew Potters were ok before this video became well publicised, I still think they do an unpleasant job well, so my opinion hasn't changed.

As long as they are available and it can be done I will have mine pts by the hunt at home, but I wouldn't stand in the way of anybody who didn't have this facility and wished to use Potters.

I would pts at home. However, if I was not able to have this done on my yard and I could not take them to a hunt, then I would go to a slaughterhouse, but I would personally take them and stay with them, which I think most owners would do.

What I could not do is have them transported out of the country - I would rather shoot them myself.

I haven't seen the video so haven't answered the poll, but I would always have my horses PTS at home if need be.

When I was younger, my pony has to be PTS for medical reasons. We decided to get the slaughterman to come and collect him and do the deed at the slaughterhouse. However, a couple of weeks later my Dad was driving past the farm where the slaughterhouse is based and he saw my pony out in the field. As you can imagine, we were livid, especailly as he had to be PTS for medical reasons.

I obviously hate to see them go, but I would never let anyone take a horse away to be PTS again.

I have no problem with properly regulated and managed slaughterhouses (like Potters).

I wouldn't send a horse there personally, but I can understand why some people decide to do so.

Hmmm, I wonder who the 1 vote for banning slaughterhouses was from?

[/ QUOTE ] Not me, that's for sure.

I personally wouldn't take any of my horses to a slaughterhouse, I prefer them to be put to sleep at home, however I have no issues with others choosing this method.

I would still choose PTS at home but having seen the video I have no problem at all with the way the horses were handled or dispatched and if anything it made me far more comfortable with the work that they do and the way that they do it. I found it a lot less disturbing than seeing pictures of emaciated living horses.

Hasn't changed much for me. I feel better about the horses that need to go to the slaughterhouses but mine will go to the kennels or have the hunt out if pre-arranged, if it's an emergency then I will be calling my vet and the slaughterman who used to do our meat animals, whichever can get to me quicker. The slaughterman has despatched so many thousands of animals that I know 100% I can trust him to send my horses off in the best possible manner.

It is the manner in which the horse was being slaughtered that caused the concern.

In this instant they where using a shotgun which was being held upside down to shoot the horse.

This is not the correct procedure and is also dangerous for the operator and those assisting him. It is the procedures within this slaughterhouse which need to be investigated, reported on and then either members of staff need disciplining or correct procedures need to be introduced.

put other..have used the one in the video before the "vids" and was there 2 weeks ago..

if any of mine are able to travel there, that is where they will end their days...

if they are unable to travel then they'll be dealt with by the vet/knackerman....
