We have been offered a 7 year old French Bulldog :o

I don't know the owners (OHs does) so I am unsure of the story behind it but I think its a house move.

We are supposed to be deciding between a lab or a rottie and getting a pup at the end of the year, french bulldogs have never been part of our doggy plan!

If it were an Akita or Staff I would have flatly said no and sent them Caylas way:o but the idea of another small calm older dog is really growing on me.

Any pics / stories of frenchies to put me off / persuade me to take him on?

We have a lot of frenchies around my way.

Not my cup of tea but they are cute.

My worries would be health. They don't do well in the heat and they don't do well walking any real distance because they are a brachycephalic breed.

Breathing was my main concern. Betsy will go for hours and we often go out for mammoth walks and she just jumps in the river to cool down. Im not sure how an older frenchie would fit in with that.

Probably not very well.

Maybe you could foster with a look to re home?

My dad has two in France, quite uncommon there actually and dad always gets asked what breed they are. Aggie is 5 years old and her daughter Charlotte, who's 3. I am not a dog person but they are cute. Very inquisitive! Both are very cat-like and adore being fussed over and sleep on my bed when I'm there and will happily curl up on the sofa and doze for hours and hours - quite a lazy breed I think! They like to know what's going on, and due to their size, like to be up on your lap so they can see what's going on at the table!! Negatives, they are quite difficult to train and seem quite disobedient, being very stubborn. They are keen on chasing cattle and frequently disappear down rabbit holes! My dad lost the elder one for 3 days in York last year as she wandered off and wouldn't come back, despite his calling!!
I am happy to answer any questions, though as I say I am only speaking from being a visitor to them as I am not a doggy person!

Why not contact the breed society: The French Bulldog Club of
England. Ask for the secretary. They have a website. Ask her
the same questions you put in your post.

This is what OH has suggested. Waiting to hear more about the dog before we make any decisions. He would have to get along with Betsy either way.

My justification of getting another dog was to have something bigger that sounds scarier than Bs yap when OH is away with work.

I am going to end up with a house full of yappers.:rolleyes:

You can have this one - he dosen't bark! Honest!;)

OK - I know he's no Frenchie, but even when Phoebe and Zenia are giving it rip, he just listens in that funny way that BT's do. He's the quietest terrier I've ever come across!

I'll do a swap if you like! ;):D

ahhh.. another person who stuffs all staffies in with the "vicious dog" brigade. Please DON'T. Fair enough if you do not like the look of a proper staffie, or like terriers but do not blanket them with this attitude.

So, here's some food for thought. In the way of people who inadvertently stumbled onto Marley and me last weekend and howled when the dog dies at the end.. Staffie rescue published pictures of the unwanted staffies who were unclaimed, could not find a rescue in time and were put down yesterday.

And just for the record, having known friends with French bulldogs - I liked them because they were great characters.. and very like staffies.

i have a frenchie taloola (dont laugh at her name please) :D

she is 5 now... and to be honest we have had so many problems with her, i will never get another one :( she is a lovely dog, so loyal and trusting and follows me everywhere... and she is a great little guard dog..

BUT, she has had sooooooo many problems with skin problems (hereditary) eye problems such as ulcers and cherry eye, and once her eye ball actually popped out (which was awful)

her breathing AND HER SNORING!!! although funny, if she has to much exercise has been known to pass out.

they can not swim (one of only 3 breeds in the world) apparently (not sure if that is true or not, but due to the breathing i would have thought it is)

and insurance ..... there isnt really any point in getting any.... frenchies have that many things that could go wrong alot of insurance comps wont insure you.

lovely sweet loyal dogs that you just want to cuddle all day but vet bills is the major downside to the breed xxxxx

I do like terriers. My current dog is a terrier and the old boy I recently lost was a terrier.

I think staffys are ugly to be honest. Sod all to do with attitude or agression.

Please do not play the 'woe is me everyone thinks my breed is dangerous' card with me when in my OP I said I was considering a Rottie
I have grown up with Ridgebacks and defend the breed where I can, if someone dislikes a breed that is up to them though:rolleyes:

 You know I would love Bear!! I will happily collect BTs all my life but OH rekons we can only have 2 dogs and I need one of them to be slightly more off putting to theives than B. If someone broke into my house Betsy would give them a snog and show them round:rolleyes:

Lol....a frenchie:D:D
My friend has one, he is the collest litle dude ever! he is well bred so dos not have alot of the issues they come with, he can als play for hours with his sister (a lurcher) I have some pics of him somewhere. Obs take care in theheat andover exercising but victor manages fine I must say.
Did they give reasons why they are rehoming? check him out and see what his character is like, and check his general health. Im sure I could home him if u decide it was a huge mistake:p
Obs, a rotti would be my 1st choice:)

Just something to do with moving, OH is finding out more today. I don't even want a french bulldog but they are little... and cute... and he is oldish. I am so going to end up with one:rolleyes:

At least it would fit in the car:rolleyes: A Rottie is my first choice too, OH wants a lab because his mother had kittens when we said Rottie :p

I respond to what you typed. If you had made your VIEW clear, then I would not have "played" the "woe" card. Which as I do get to see what goes on with this breed, I do see the prejudice as pretty insulting.

I have no problem if you don't find the breed attractive, find them too much whatever but why not be a little considerate and be clear as opposed to making a blanket statement. You only add to the already poor picture.

All I said is that I would not rehome an akita or a staff. I thought I was able to type such things without having to defend myself.

If someone were to show a dislike to Border Terriers or say they wouldn't have one I wouldn't be so reactive. Surely personal choice is permitted? Or do we all have to have a staff first?

I really think you have taken this completely the wrong way.

I really think you have taken this completely the wrong way.

Yep i do too.
As an Akita lover and A pit bull lover (you think staffs have a problem there meet the pit bull here)

I would personally never own a border but LML knows that i am not saying that they are evil dogs that no one should have. I love Betsy. They are just not my cup of tea to own!

We do our breeds no favors by over reacting and jumping on people who have a bad word to say about them.

Again, think what you are posting and how it comes across. I take it how it has been read AND I was CLEAR in my post that it is not obligatory to take on a staffie, just asking you to not contribute to the feelings against them with your blanket comment. So if think I took it the wrong way, how about re reading your post and seeing how it comes across?

I read back and to be fair LML only said if it where an akita or staff I would send it caylas way (I should be the one kicking off her):p:D because A, I have an akita and B, Im the one getting palmed off with them:eek::p

Some folk just have certain breeds that "are not for them" she never said anything bad, I personally would not own a collie or any little hand bag type dog. (just not for me)
I would also maybe look at it like the person maybe thinks, they are alot of dog to manage and feel they would not do it justice, I kind of like people thinking this re my breed (akita) stops them being taken on whim or because they look nice/impressive, surely that what we aim for. Or maybe a ad experience or lots of meeting with rather manic ones, I will convert that LML to akitas just like i did to rotts:p but then an akita is a bit of a big play mate for B:p

Lucy we know how passionate you are in regard to staffs and the ways in which they get such a shittey deal but they are not for all thats for sure.

Frenchies are adorable, very naughty, lovely deep snores.A friend of mine in Germany has one,Chelsea, and she goes everywhere including the long walks every day that the mini bull terrier squad do. Chelsea is extremely healthy..don`t be put off by horrer tales ..you can find those about every breed ,believe me. If you want an aimiable little clown to amuse you as no other breed ..grab him!

So if think I took it the wrong way, how about re reading your post and seeing how it comes across?

I've just done this for what feels like the hundreth time. And I'm not reading it any differently.........:(

.......lml simply stated that she would send an Akita or a Staffie on to Cayla. Nowhere did she say or imply that either of these two breeds are dangerous or vicious.

There's a lovely chihuahua pup on here that's been 'adopted' by a drop-dead gorgeous Basenji. Neither of those two breeds 'float my boat', but that dosen't mean I don't like reading about them or looking at their pics.

By the way, *hold hands up!* I admit I have a BT as well. Terriers are my thing, but I'm not leaping to lml's defence just because she has one too.

This side not has been making me giggle. I'm the first to defend any breed but the OP didn't say anything negative so no need to jump on them :s I wouldn't jump on someone who said they wouldn't have a corgi......just because they're wrong doesn't mean I should judge them ;)

I'm not a toy breed fan but I do like the look of Frenchies.......wouldn't have one though because I'm not a toy dog fan.

Goodness. I just wasted hours of my life in NL. Never going in there again!

I would also send cayla the skinny dogs, chi's and beagles. Does that even things out a bit??

Cayla I will probably love your akita but I could never do one justice, therefore I wont get one. Common sense surely?!

So the police have had it wrong all these years.... should have been using borders :)

I guess I can see both sides- I was shocked when I first got Dex that someone responded on here with "not my sort of dog".... IMO dont post on an excited new owners thread with negativity.... similar to breed choice I guess... ok ok so you dont want one fine, but it is kinda like saying that those who do are a bit odd----- actually maybe we are. :)

Personally I would never say "I dislike XYZ breed" or "they are ugly" as it is almost like saying "god isnt that member of your family ugly/horrible" etc, as that is how a lot of pet dogs are viewed.
