Going to view a horse!

When I changed my user name many years back in an attempt to escape the intimidation on here from certain posters who were enjoying prodding and poking me to get me to bite I changed his sex in an attempt to hide from the perpetrators because I was geting really desperate and low but I still wanted to contribute to the forum and help others if I could.

It wasn't in an attempt to use two usernames at the same time, there was no cross over or intended malice. It was just to escape from the relentless bullying campaign levelled against me as evident from recent threads or at least evident to those that are clever to open their eyes enough to see through it all. I didn't mention any mare related health issues or anything, it was merely call him her in a desperate attempt to escape the constant hounding I experienced because it made me very poorly at the time.

If I have let people down I am sorry but I really was backed into a corner at the time.

Thats's why. I did have a mare in 1987 but after 3 months we sold her and I've never really wanted one since. 😐

I got one of mine from Chris Dyson and he was so easy to deal with. I bought unseen and the horse that arrived was just as he'd described him, and you have a month to return for any reason at all for a full refund. I'm sure if you contacted him and told him what you wanted he might be able to find it for you.

Out of interest I follow Chris Dyson on Facebook and he seems to get the type that’s many people want but I can’t get my head round why people buy unseen and don’t try them first. It does seem to work as he sounds very fair and doesn’t quibble taking horses back, but you pays £250 deposit which is non refundable so he gets that amount anyway.. most of what he gets are heavier than I would want , even if I was looking

Mine was bought unseen because I live a miles from anywhere and going to view anything involves a plane or ferry trip and overnight stay which costs more than the £250 deposit! I also get nervous and turn into a complete idiot when people are watching me so would rather bumble round on my own getting to know the horse. I admit I did have my fingers firmly crossed that he had been honest about the horse when I got on for the first time hoping I wasn't about to be launched off across the yard. But he was as good as he'd promised and stood quietly waiting while I worked up the courage to get off the mounting block and on the horse.
I felt happy to take the risk because if it turned out the horse wasn't suitable or I just didn't like it I knew I could just send it back but two years later and he's still with me.

Well I thought I'd update you.

I'm still looking to buy a horse. Tantalising we have a stable spare and the paddock next to Lari is free so I could leave the two of them out 24/7 for the odd day a week. So I'm making a real effort to find something.

It's still really difficult. I saw a lovely maxi cob but it sold quickly and then I saw an advert for my almost 'perfect horse' but it had a sarcoid and also had the odd buck and nap which was presumably why it was so cheap and I'm too long in the tooth for that caper.

The weight loss journey is going well and I've lost a total of 2st and four pounds. Still riding the lovely Morph once a week too. Fingers crossed for finding one soon.

No Y.O doesn't seem to want me to. Given I've been looking on/off for two years its a long time to hold a stable and loss of full rent she could potentially get. But she said she'll always find me space bless her, she's a super y.o and she's in no hurry to fill the stables anyway.

I'm not working at the moment, I have left my job (one of the reasons was they changed the role considerably and have now advertised for something completely different) so I have plenty of time to look, view and vet. And fortunately additiinal savings so I won't have to go into the horsey fund.

Exciting times.
 
I've just rang up about a 7yr old gelding with a view to going to view it.

Had a long chat with the owner and he's answered alot of questions. It's about a 4hr round trip from me so doable. The horse has done a fair bit of dressage and hacks on its own, not done much if any jumping though. He's a laid back sort and is shod all round.

However the horse is kept in a field and the chap selling it has broken his ankle (unrelated accident) so there is no one to get on first.

Given the awful stories I've heard about buyers getting on and ending up buried and given the fact they'll be no one to ride the horse or provide a suitable area for vetting I'm not certain I want to proceed.

Would you walk away or would you suggest he takes it to a venue to be viewed and see if he'sopen to thaf suggestion?
 
I would personally walk away. I was decked within about 3 seconds of getting on a horse at a dodgy dealers (unknown they were dodgy at the time), I have a back problem which doesn't enjoy being launched off a horse. At a venue the horse is not familiar with and you're a different rider I'd think the risk was higher. I also don't like horses that have been turned away and are not in work whatever the reason as you don't get a realistic view of how they will be when fit, soundness wise or for riding / handling. Finally, I wouldn't pay a 5 figure sum for a horse if the owner had no way of getting it fully vetted, either at own premises or by agreement at a local vet practise.
