Going to view a horse!

Sorry i may have given the wrong impression, he's not turned away as his partner rides him, hacks him out. He just lives in a field and they also ride him in that field, have made a track around it or something.

He's not expensive at all, on the lower end.

I might just go and view him but only to rule him out. New car needs a run out 😁

I did break the rules and rode coblet at the viewing first but only a short hack and with the owner waking alongside me. I took him for a WTC in a field and decided I felt sorry for him and bought him, but I only wanted him as a hacker and paid a pittance for him. I’m sorry there are too many red flags for me here and I bet he’s not a pittance.

So that information is telling me a number of possible concerns.
1. Is stressed when confined in a stable
2. Weaves or windsucks when confined which is not a desirable sight to a potential purchaser.
3. Wind issues when in a stabled situation which do not show when living out.

If he is the stamp, size, sensibility and ability you describe as wanting there will be a reason (s) he is cheaper.

OK I'm crap at explaining.

He's part stabled. Like my horses have been.

The field with the stables in is 2 acres. He shares field with a filly.

They have set up a dressage 'arena' in the field and ride in the field and that.

totally agree with the low price but it's probably more of a 'not done lots' than an issue

It's an odd coincidence that the person suddenly decided to sell the horse when they broke their ankle, especially if it really is a non horse related injury, do you know how long it's been for sale for. I wouldn't sell a perfectly OK, sound horse because I couldn't ride for a few weeks.

I also wonder, like a couple of other people have mentioned, why they've told you no body will be able to ride at a viewing if the partner is riding the horse regularly 🤔.

There's another reason why their selling the horse but it's too outing for me to say on here.

I'll send you the ad via pm if you want. It's just a bit unfair to put it on here to be pulled apart, if that happens.

Red flags for me sorry Birker. I find these ones (sold from field, out of work due to rider illness/injury etc etc) usually turn out to have issues.
Go for something straightforward that you can see in the stable, in an arena and out on a hack. And please don’t get on it without seeing it ridden.

These are the type that people buy and then all the little details start appearing later when they dig a bit further into its history once the issues start.

Yep no worries. I was a little surprised my friend suggested him tbh.

Although tbf he's not being sold out of the field and is currently being hacked. But I get your point. 😀

I got on Fin without seeing him ridden first, but he’s 14hh and I’m an idiot. I also knew his previous owner (well...ish...she was a friend of a friend) and therefore knew the reason she didn’t have a rider for him was (probably) legit. Did I say I was an idiot?

Like other people, I’m wondering why the person who’s allegedly riding him now can’t ride him at the viewing.

Probably because she works full time and we wanted to view during the day.

It doesn't really matter, I'm not going to bother anyway. Too many red flags for me, there is no way I'm going to jump on an unknown horse first after my friends experience.

One of the best horses my sister and i have ever bought was dirt cheap, the owner was on crutches, he was in a cherry roller and fell over a x pole as he had hardley jumped at all. Liked him but he was a little too small, but bought him anyway as he was a super safe hack.

Sold him after 4 months (having immediately put him in a snaffle) as our vet wanted him for her young daughter who inside 12 months was jumping 110 on him. Took her to the pony club champs inside 2 years. Is now on his 3rd of their children!!

I get that this is unusual, but sometimes good horses can end up in weird situations.

Good luck with your hunt!

That's the thing though, this horse could have ended up being Birker's horse of a lifetime, or she could end up with a broken heart and thousands of £ owed to the vet... there will be a hundred stories either way that the forum could recount, but when you have sufficient budget for what you need, the luxury of time and have been through the ringer already with one retiree, then it just isn't worth taking any risks.

Exactly this, having rehomed a horse this year following extensive efforts to rehab and now realising that I am potentially going to have to up my budget to get what I want by 3-5k, which is doable but I will be saving for a bit longer, I will also want to minimise any potential purchase risks. If and when I do buy another horse it will be the final time I do. I fully get that anything can go wrong with any horse at at any time, but I would like a fighting chance of everything being ok to begin with.

Good luck with your search Birker.

Thanks Waxwing. Its nearly impossible at the moment to find anything. I've never known it this hard, between 1995 and 2004 I bought six horses, all lovely quality horses without any issues within a 4 - 6 week time period of searching from people i trusted. Now the market is very different and it's pants, it really is.

I have enough money to buy a midteen £ horse and have a contingency fund BUT I'm now not working. Grrr. The current construction employment market is as bewildering and erratic as the horse market 🙄

Hence why I'm really looking low teens. This was ridiculously cheap at £8250 but it looked to be very well bred and a nice potential for dressage. Fairly young and I thought a nice 'type'. As you know the horse in the photo can look very different a few months down the line - Lari went from very weak to well muscled and strong topline very quickly with the right work/feed.

I got sent the video and let's just say the horse was being ridden by a pro, lets just say very sympathetically and looked nothing special at all, strung out, not in a contact, just very plain. I don't buy the story the seller gave me I'm afraid.

I guess I was more curious about whether a potential buyer would try a horse without the seller or his agent getting on first rather than any real interest in this particular horse.

After repeatedly telling anyone that will listen that buying anything (within my remit) under 10k in this current market is a waste of time I do a u turn. I just keep thinking of that empty paddock next to Lari and the fact that whilst I'm not working I can get ahead of the market by viewing during the week instead of the weekend and have quality time to spend with a new horse. And it was fairly local too not a 8 hour round trip!

Good luck with your search.

I would agree that anything under 10k appears to look suspect, at least at present. I have just seen an ad on Horsequest that looks like a possible. It gave a trade telephone number but no name. Having put the number into Facebook its Anna Goldingg, one of the more notorious dealers known near to me.

Oh god, you'd be better off setting fire to your money!

I have forgotten what your spec/budget is I won't lie, but I really like this guy https://www.horsequest.co.uk/advertisment/370220

He is gorgeous but sadly well over budget. I will be looking at 12k is and that will be in a couple of months when I have added to the pot a bit more. It might stretch to 13 but 20 would mean saving for another year from now.
