Good lord....give me strength

*Shivers* Please do not go for the carving knife choice. I would think it would be incredibly messy, slowing cutting through........*shivers again*

Think of the carpets!

Not knowing which way a pelham is fitted is a very novice mistake - nothing more, nothing less - it also shows that the people fitting it have absolutely no concept on how bits work and what rein aids do to a bit when it is in a horses mouth.

PS Do they really sell chain saws in Argos?? Maybe they are hedge trimmers, don't know if you need a licence in Canada, but you do for a chain saw in the UK. Right enough of this, I need to sleep. Yes, I know it's only 9pm, I sure know how to live life on the edge!!!

Don't worry MHB, I have a vax thing.
Or did, until I fell over it, down the stairs.
That hurt....so an electric carving knife will only tickle, I'm sure.
Particularly if I use it on someone else

You don't need a license to run a chainsaw in Canada, or at least I've never heard of anyone actually having one. Go to Canadian Tire, buy chainsaw, commence attempt to cut off head. All very simple.

You do however need a license to smoke pot.

It does beg the question though, how are you going to know you need help if you don't have a clue. Quite frankly I'm amazed by the number of people who have horses and ride who don't have any sort of regular, experienced supervision/assistance. Even more so here than in Canada, from what I can tell.

Why is that? Horses are dangerous and fragile - seems like EXACTLY the sort of situation where one would prefer to learn from other people's mistakes.

And, alas, loving something is no guarantee you're not hurting it. Heck, that clearly doesn't work in any other area, why would it with horses? And horses don't care if you love them, they care if you treat them right. An unwelcome truth perhaps, but true none the less.

Bulletin boards and the internet are great for discussion, I guess, but I do wonder sometimes if people use then INSTEAD of proper instruction. Gathering knowledge is very important but context and correct action are everything with horses and that can only be learned from experience (which, sorry to say, costs) or, slightly more safely, easily and humanely, from someone who is standing there, watching in real time.

But, as said, there are ways of saying things. Making people defensive almost never puts them in a good position to learn and after all that's the goal isn't it?

agree 100% tia...

when i was a kid, i read books, read more books, went to riding school, read more books...oh and a few more books...

i could strip down remake and ride CORRECTLY in a Double bridle when i was 9!!!!!

no excuse whatsoever to not know how to correctly fit tack.

Admin! can we have a googly eyed smiley please??

okay.....

I've had to go outside, light up, and try and mentally envisage how to put a pelham on upside down.

Nope. I'm still confused. it's been years since I used a pelham.

Though I did once put a curved eggbutt on back to front on the bridle

(actually, that was 3 weeks ago

). So sophie's friend has one up on me, because I don't think I could put a pelham on upside down if i tried.

Sophie: You're not a bad mummy, just next time your friend offers you her wisdom double check it first. We really are a friendly bunch

i had my experience in working livery yards from the age of 11, and before that rode and drove with my auntie and uncle for few years,

personally i hate reading books!!

never put a double bridle together, never ridden a horse thats worn one,

so hey it could have been worse i could have put 2 bits in his mouth upside down!!!!

you might want to say that to Tia, she started this slanging match on me!!!
there was no need to start a bloody post about it was there?

If you arent sure how to use something, dont use it.

Do you even know what a pelham does Sophie?
Or did you think it just might get your horse to drop its nose into an 'outline' ?

Saying you dont like to read is no excuse, it would have taken one lesson with an instructor to show you how to fit the bit, what it does, and if you should be using it.

no im not using it to get an ''outline'' he does that 90% of the time, i did forget to mention that when i hadnt long broken him in my instruter told me to put a martingale on him because on the odd occasion he would throw his head but it wasn't that bad, which i now regret cos if we're out hacking and having a canter and i ask him to slow down he put his head up and takes off, so we're getting to grips without a martingale too, i only want a bit more control in the show ring and hunting, everything else will/is done in a loop ring snaffle.

Tia, and a few others, me included have replied.....

obviously you dont like the comments.....

where is the "witch-hunt"??

as i said previously...read a few books..yo may learn something, instead of just sitting back and being part of the "blame-free" society.....

you obviously cant see where im coming from, i dont mind people giving me CC on the post i made but she didnt have to make a big deal of it and make me look like a complete and utter T**T!!!

i can take CC but i dont appreciate being made out to be 10 year old plonker!!!

and to Quote 'witch hunt' i meant to say i would never make the same mistake again and if a made such a mistake again i wouldnt post on here!

done it.......thanks.

i don't see the point of "cotton-wool" posts xxkatyxx

this young lady has only herself to blame for he post...don't see the point of softening the blow for her.

lifes tough..deal with it.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh I am very, VERY seldom cross on this forum but I am tonight. By your own admission you have ten years experience with horses, you also state that you broke this horse in yourself. Yet you obviously have no idea how bits work on horses, you have no knowledge on the utmost basics of equine knowledge and you cannot be bothered to and have no interest in learning because you don't like books and you obviously do not study horses by just looking at what is around you! I am 100% sure that I could give my 6 year old a bridle and a pelham and he would know which way round it fits, just LOOK at the bit, it has a curb chain and there is only one place for that to lie, and what about the curb hooks - surely the fact that they are upside down should have told you something?

Blaming someone else is not an option - I have, do and will always alter the tack put on my horses if it is not what I deem as correct.

I do wonder whether there is any horse sense left in this world - people take on youngsters these days and because they can sit on a horse think they are above learning - NO ONE is above learning, and I will be very interested in seeing where the horse world is in 30 years time. (this last para is not aimed at you exclusively).

Sorry, had to do that - I don't feel clever doing it as it is very unlike me, but I am at a loss here.
