OMG can't believe what i just watched that is awful!!! Poor horse!!
He should have def been pulled up earlier esp after he slid off the 1st corner when the horse could barely keep cantering!!
What must the horses owner be thinking!! would you leave the horse with him??
I haven't read all the posts so apology if someone has said this already, but I often wonder what pressure the riders are put on, by owners or sponsors to achieve?
I don't know the owners, sponsors or anyone else involved...but you never know what goes on in the background that makes people do what they do.
Thank you for directing me to this. I'm shocked at HM's lack of awareness of just how out on his feet that poor horse was.
Just before the clip finishes the way DUnauger looks at him with his ears pricked as he's trapped on the fence is heart-rending.
But putting emotion to one side, it appears to me that the applause when he was circling after his run out was because the crowd thought he was calling it a day, and the stewards too because they were running across to him and had to quickly get out of the way when he continued turning and cantered across their path. I think they were surprised he carried on.
One of the things that's drummed into us at every fence judges briefing I've been part of, albeit that I've never judged at that level, is that if we are unhappy about the way a horse is going or if it's being pushed beyond it's limits is either to flag it down ourselves or radio for steward's assistance. It's very easy to be wise after the event, and see things you wouldn't have noticed before, but D was not looking happy for some time before his run-out, and he certainly should have been stopped there.
I'm sure HM is devastated at how his Burghley turned out, it could have been even worse, and fingers crossed we see a happier Dunauger out next season.

I have had lessons with his owner, and whilst I can see the above would be the case for many combinations, I honestly think that Tracy would not have put any undue pressure on Harry. The horse is stabled near me sometimes and I don't think he is just a 'competing machine' for the owner.
I understand that he tied up! That would explain his problem behind which was exhibiting itself well before his accident! Tracy Garside must be furious!
Interesting. I thought over the trakhener at Fence 4 he wasn't using his back and back end particularly fluently. He didn't seem to be tucking his back legs up, but assumed that was his normal way of going, not being familiar with his usual style.

I have heard that a lot of pressure was put on him by owners to finish the course (dunno how true it is)
I promise you i'm not stiring things, I was working at burghley as an ambulanceman on that fence, and went and helped cut all the rope, and helped to get the horse free.
I look after horses myself and just couldn't stand there and see him stuck on the fence.
I just want to know he is ok
