My Tbs have had there heavyweights on but the ponies are still either naked or in lightweights, the horses and cobs who aren't my precious pansy tb ponies are mainly full clipped and out in medium weights.

Let's hope the heavyweights can stay packed away!

I haven't even bought one! Horse didn't need one last winter (I used a 200g full neck TO with a 75g on top, and he was warm enough) and even with a hunter clip, now he is in the 200g and I am almost debating going back to the 75g...!!

Merryn is still out naked and even had his muzzle put back on in Jan.
Herbs is in as his field is to wet for him to be out but he's be naked to if he was out.
Both my boys are forestbred new forests.

Both mine are clipped but neither has has their heavyweight on yet. Medium weight seems to have been fine so far. I hope they go right through without using them, it'll save me the cleaning bill for 2 rugs. ;)

Nope...my HW has stayed wrapped up, so one less rug to send for cleaning when the time comes...!

My boy had a hunter clip mid October and he's now down to just a fleece rug over night (our winter turnout is 'in at night' where i am at the moment), as he's casting and always gets itchy at this time of year when he begins to change coats. He goes out in an Amigo no fill, with an attached 100gsm insulator inside it and he's been in this all winter.

Hopefully i'll be removing the insulator in his outdoor rug soon......fingers crossed!

riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...

really? my fully fit (competing PSG, schooling GP) fully clipped TB ,with EPSM,doesnt need a HW? what planet are you on...............

and ditto for all the other thin skinned, fully clipped, wimpy sorts-would you rather let them shiver.

moronic statement.

Don't rise to it. :) FWIW I agree with you - every horse is different and lives in different conditions and therefore should be rugged accordingly. I have one in a HW, one in a rainsheet, and one naked. Although obviously when it was windy I put all three in multiple rugs to weigh them down a bit. :p

No, all my heavy rugs remain in the packaging they returned in from the cleaners.

Yesterday morning my lad was sticky underneath his middle weight rug and glad to have it taken off. It's 12 degrees here now.

Nop - save on the cleaning for those, in fact I've only used the medium weight once when his usual lightweight with thin stable rug underneath was so soaking it took two days to dry.
He's currently naked and has been for 2 weeks now - even at night with a chaser/ irish clip - he;s on box rest and eating lots of hay to avoid boredum so he can burn a few calories keeping warm on the odd night it's a bit chilly.

When I brought my boy 15 years ago, he came with a heavyweight rug with full neck - and has never worn it. I keep thinking i should sell it, but then I think that as he is getting older he may just need it. Each horse is different. my boy is a Welsh D and grows a great coat

Nope. Last year my mum's TB lost a bit too much condition so he got wrapped up warm when ad-lib hay and a big dinner failed to keep the weight on. This year he's soft and flabby round the edges and lives out in his 200g. I even put a lightweight on one on Sunday - they were roasting in the sunshine! What a wonderful problem to have! :)

The only one who has been in a HW has been my project mare as she lives out. However, this has only been for a couple of nights (and mainly because she's run out of dry MW rugs!).

My other two haven't even been into their MW combos yet this winter and they have been fine. I do wonder if I've been over rugging them previous years as they are currently doing so well.

Nope, went to a middle weight and now back to lightweight. Shame, cos the heavier rugs are beautiful!! Spotty!

Yes, but only because GreyDonkey is a wuss, fully clipped and dropped off quite a lot of weight after hunting. Last year, though, he was in multiple rugs (including a HW . . . ssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh or I'll be banned).

Today he's out in a MW.

Mine is in his heavy weight as is out 24/7 ann clipped with half a face and legs on. Before being clipped in Jan he had his m/w on and some days was on the cool side. Both have full necks and he has access to a 3 sided barn if he wishes. Clearly a wimpy Gelderlander!

Oh I wish we had a LIKE button.

My clydesdale x cob has a blanket clip and is out in a rain sheet! She was in a 110g for a while but was too warm! I spent a fortune buying various rugs in preparation for winter but have ended up selling some of them as they were just taking up room!

Horses don't need heavyweight rugs

I'm sure that's true.....if your horse grows the coat of a yak and you don't ever intend to 'work' it while resembling a yak. It is great when horses can be kept o'natural, all my 3 could cope no problem with very minimal rugging but I make the choice to keep them in work through Winter, which means they need clipping, which means they need rugging. So my horses DO need heavy weight rugs.

Nope. I'm another one who doesn't own a heavyweight rug, but my horse is a welsh cob and wouldn't need it. He has been wearing a lightweight on and off over the last few weeks. I should have taken it off him this morning as it's quite mild here but at least part of him will be clean if I get chance to ride later!

One of my old boys had his on for a couple of days when the temperature dropped sharply but once he was acclimatised to it he went back to a medium. I rug mine according to what they need and prefer. My old boy is always most cheery when he feels very warm to touch under his rug. If you let my big mare get that hot she'd be very cross and grumpy. At the moment nothing has on more than a medium and two are naked.
