Took my horse in tonight for feeding/check & he was very very sweaty under his rug.
He is 16yr old IDX, lives out 24/7 & has a trace clip- he is quite woolley & it has grown in alot already!
I have never taken him in like this before though!
He was in a lightweight no fill rug until about two weeks ago when the weather began to get bit frosty and unpredictable so i changed him to a mw (200fill). is he sweating because the weather is unpredictable and he's perhaps over-rugged at times when milder?

it worried me seeing him like this so i waited until he dried off and have put a older mw no neck on him before turning him back out.

my first thought was that he must have been galloping around the field as two of the other horse in his field had been taken in but this would be unusual as he still had a field mate. He ate his feed fine and then some hay.

any suggestions/advice welcomed.

Thanks

My Wimpy TB is fully clipped and he has been sweating when wearing a HW recently as it has just been so mild, he's in a MW now when stabled at night and a lightweight during the day! Makes a cange having to cool him down as usually I struggle to keep him warm

My boy is out 24/7 and has been, up till tonight , in a 1200d lite amigo , with neck if wet but without if dry and he's got a blanket clip and has been warm as toast . He's got a 70g PE rug on tonight but only cos the temp has dropped a bit , so i think your boy just may have got a bit over rugged , the temp is still pretty high during the day for this time of year , so i would suggest the lite again until it gets colder ..

It is very warm. I was thinking today that it was colder in September! I've had to take my coat and/or jumper off while doing the stables as I was too warm...

Thanks for all the replies :) i'm going to put him back to his lightweights until temps drop a bit more. He is a good-doer so shud be fine in them a bit longer. It's so difficult to know wot to do for best just now. Been a very strange winter for NE Scotland so far! im sure it will change very quickly!!!

I was worried about one of mine a couple of days ago, he is not clipped or rugged but has a thick coat, and had a lot of dried sweat on him..... It turned out he was getting het up because he could see a donkey in the water meadow below our field, OH, saw him charging up and down snorting at the strange grey aparition in disbelief.
On most days i have been taking our Arabs rug of during the day as it has been too warm!
