Just a short answer on a post card required here. Im just wondering where the shortages of farriers are, that and the over supply.

So say where you are and if you feel there is a shortage/enough/too many

Thanks everyone. And just think if everyone that reads my posts actually replied i would have quite the number of results.

In North East Derbyshire there doesnt seem to be that many different farriers to say how many horses there is in the area but the ones that are around must work bl**dy hard as everybody seems to use the same ones

Vale of Glamorgan Area - shortage of reliable farriers

Haha , we have very different views and we live less than a mile apart

Surrey/Hants borders seems to have enough, but they wont touch on each others clients

so can be difficult if you need to swap farriers for any reason (which I dont)

Hamsphire South have a shortage off GOOD ones!

I know at least 3 of the top of my head I could get out tomorrow and do a bad job! Around here if you can get them out tomorrow for a routine set, there's a reason!

I have an EXCELLENT farrier, who books appointment on the previous day, has never changed them. Turns up on time, Is always on the phone if you have a problem and works with vets etc excellently.

Goole, East Yorkshire. Seem to have enough but I stick with the fantastic one I've got so not entirely sure, as don't ring round for others and there's only two of us on my yard who both use the same one. He's incrediably reliable, in fact he's usually 15mins early and sometimes I haven't even got the horses in from the field by the time he arrives!!

Berkshire (Reading area) - plenty around but not all good

Some are good but unreliable, some are just not good. Generally though, you can find a farrier quite easily. Finding one who you stick with is the hard part!

Plenty of farriers in Shropshire, but several v hard to get hold of and are not taking on any new customers. Ergo: could do with more!

From what I hear Cambridge area has a shortage - I've got a great one though, so it's not a worry for me!

We seem to have a number of good farriers in mid/west Wiltshire and they all seem to be kept busy so I would hazard a guess that numbers are about right.

I'm in Cardiff and I'd say there is a shortage of reliable local farriers.

We had the same farrier for 13 years who then got really unrealiable, turning up late or not at all and we found it a nightmare getting another one that would be able to come within 1 month and willing to trim a shire cross with a big tendancy to 'lean'!

We've thankfully found a brilliant one now but have to book well in advance.

Goodwood, West Sussex, Shortage of DECENT farriers. Meaning prices have gone stupid and they can treat you like their doing you a huge favour. Last summer the only farrier I could get was from London (few hours away) it was mad. It's also scary seeing some shockingly dodgy farriers getting work from less exierenced\tight owners because the good ones are gold dust!
