Sorry I've actually been PMing Harriett on the sly and have discovered that she is infact a hairy, overweight, sex starved male so we are going to hook up after I've finished abusing my horse.
 
Actually cannot wait. What area will you be competing in Harriett? So hope we cross paths so I can witness the full glory in real life.
 
Bit of a sad story I want to share, but peer pressure over what tack we use on our horses can have some serious consequences :(

Aeons ago I used to ride with a girl on two rescue ponies we had on loan. I was 15 and she was 16. She was a lovely rider, very sweet and gentle without being timid at all. We'd been riding together for years and when she hit 16 her parents decided it was time she had a real 'grown up' horse. So she got her dream come true, a gorgeous black thoroughbred mare. The only hick was that the previous owner said the mare had been started as a race horse and could sometimes be strong over flat open spaces, but swapping to a pelham had sorted that out. My friend worshipped her new horse, I swear if she could she would've moved into the stable permanently :) the horse was nice too, a really soft and sound mare who would happily dawdle along with my pony. Of course it didn't take long for other people on the yard to start mouthing off about why the mare was in a pelham, how unnecessary it was, how feeble/stupid/lacking as a rider my friend must be to use it. And this wasn't just from other teens it was also adults talking behind her back and belittling her :confused: At the time I put it down to some sort of jealousy. Those of us who were close to her tried telling her to just ignore them, but after six months of bitchiness and passive aggressive bullying of all sorts she gave in and swapped to a three ring snaffle. First few schooling sessions in the arena went well so four of us decided to go out together on a hack.

Immediately something was different with the horse, it was like a switch had been flipped. We decided we'd just walk since it was obvious trotting or cantering wouldn't be a wise idea and nothing major happened, until we turned the final corner homeward along the track that lead direct to the yard. The mare lifted her tail and just bolted right off with my friend like a thing possessed. My friend tried an emergency break and was leaning hard on one rein and we watched as the horse slowly began to respond and turn - and swung straight into the side of a building at a flat out gallop. I don't even want to describe the mess that made, except to say that even though she was wearing a body protector my friend lost one of her kidneys and almost a leg. The horse had to be destroyed outright.

Naturally the first thing the people who had pressured my friend into dropping the pelham said was the typical 'ex-racehorse, it was just a matter of time' whisperings and comments about how stupid it was to buy a horse that was too much for her. But that horse never gave us a single minute of trouble before she switched bits :( Perhaps it was just a matter of time as they said, but I'll never get over my disgust at the way using a pelham somehow gave everyone on the yard carte blanche to bully my friend as much as they pleased.

And sadly this bitchiness is something I find most people who own a horse have experienced at some point :(

Howls and bawls ,nooo how can you Christmas is ruined now , ( throws half cooked christmas get ahead cooking out of kitchen door ) and flounces off.

My horse seemed happier in the pelham as soon as I started walking and then trotting down the road - even without me having to exert any pressure. When I bought him he had a lot of problems with dental work that had been ignored. From what others had said when they had seen him ridden in the snaffle - the nutcracker action of it was causing him discomfort but with the pelham exerting pressure on the bars of his mouth instead he was totally relaxed.

A snaffle has a nutcracker action if you pull back, not if you pull up. You should never pull back, it just teaches the horse to pull against you. If you want to ride your horse properly, lightly and as gently as you can get some lessons with a good classical riding instructor. If you're not bothered then happy hacking, enjoy your horse
 
I actually think that you are ALL incredibally cruel- you actually RIDE your horses? like on their backs and everything....girths and saddles are the work of the devil and they break horse's spirits. I have learnt to float above Ginge and ask that he does things via telepathy....in fact I dont want to ask him to do anything he doesnt want to do, else I would be cruel so we discuss things and reach a mutual decision....umm mainly we just spend time in the feed room :D

Not had the horse long and know that we both need schooling, not had much chance to get in the arena yet what with the dark evenings and school has either been flooded/frozen! So just ticking over with hacking getting him fit again and settling him into new surroundings until circumstances improve and I can get the schooling work in. Put the pelham in as had a scary hack where he was tanking off. In the pelham he was instantly better without any pressure. So I will be keeping him in the Pelham for now but thanks for your advice.

That's a horrible story how terrible for you and your friend :( Yes it can be very easy to feel pressured into doing something because you feel like other people are more knowledgeable. But sometimes you just have to trust your own instincts :)

hhhmmm LC- jealous? If you are really good I am planning on filming myself and my training techniques and my successes this year. I will sell u a DVD if it for £99.99 if you like? The only thing is that it might be a bit short coz in our discussions Ginge often decides that he would rather not bother and just stay at home......

Hahahaha- LC did u try a pelham coz u need some nookie? May I suggest riding in a head collar in future and instead buying a copy of Fifty Shades?:D

Strange that my horse REALLY likes his pelham with roundings and works better in it than in any other bit, isn't it??????? Clearly I'm a rubbish rider :D :p:rolleyes:;)

So to get things straight....if we ride in tack and gear, we're in need of a good 'nookie'. If we ride bareback with no extras...then we're clearly satiated?

hhhmmm when u put it like that....I will never be able to hear someone saying that they have been riding bareback now without thinking they have a different reason for doing it entirely!
