Horse cremation/incineration

It is great that your horse is feeling better, but please be aware that an old horse is...an old horse, and the inevitable will of course be inevitable. Not wanting to be the downer here, but this may well be the time time to make your plans for the future... :-(

You're right and this does mean that I have been able to make tentative arrangements. He's never seemed his age before this. Only started slowing down about a year ago and was ridden Christmas eve! I do now have a much better idea of what will happen, so if he does go downhill or a repeat episode occurs and I decide on pts, I'm better prepared. For now we're treating as a one off bacterial infection, but I'm mindful that these symptoms may be a red herring.

So glad for you that he is improving. Cortez is so right. Now is the time to look into planning everything, when a horse is actually ok. Then you can just concentrate on the horse itself when that day finally comes when you have to put the plan into action, hopefully a long way off for you. The main things are how, who by, what do do with the beloved horse after (removal), what do do if you have a cremation (group cremation if cremated, ashes returned etc) and of course, cost. You can make all these enquiries now, have the details to hand and also let someone close to you know them all. It really helps when that time comes and then you can know you’ve sorted it out now and forget about it. Good luck with his improvement, hope it continues. 🌺

A thread I never wanted to write. My pony is quite ill.and there's a real chance I'll lose him if he doesn't improve. After 2 days, he's not responding to treatment and he's an old boy. I'm therefore thinking of my options, as I won't be able to when the time comes. Hoping to donate him to my local vet school, but if not, how much is a cremation for a pony of around 300 kg? Cost will probably determine whether I go for individual or not.

depends on what service you choose and if you want wood or wicker basket and his ashes back. I use Giles and he was around £ 700 for individual cremation https://www.equineandpetservices.co.uk. I always get ashes given back to me /

Just to give you all an update. You would never believe he was at death's door! After 3 days of i.m. antibiotics he was well enough to object, plus there was some form to his poos. Vet therefore switched us to oral antibiotics. The ataxia was all but gone until the bute dose halved, then returned, so on Monday I made arrangements at the vet school for donation and got everything in place at that end. Form is all filled in and have nearest knackerman in phone just in case.

Put him back up to full dose and ataxia was better. Antibiotics finished on Tuesday and started him on intensive course of probiotics yesterday. Poos are solid enough that I felt confident to remove the tail bandage on Tuesday - haven't had to wash his bum since the weekend. He's now picking on his companion around food and no ataxia at all for a couple of days. Another vet consultation today and he was responsive to tail pull and looks fine! She took bloods anyway, as poos still not 100 %. Otherwise he's back out with his companion and lives to fight another day. Need to keep a close eye on the old git, but he honestly doesn't look like he was ever ill!! Bloody horses, eh? Will probably never find out cause, but hey ho...
