Horse disposal?

[ QUOTE ]
I really hope this isnt an insensitive question, it's not meant to be. But what does taking a horse to the hunt mean? Apologies for my ignorance and Bounty, I hope you're ok x

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, they can either come out to you, PTS (bullet) at home and then take the body away, or else you take the horse to them, and they lead it off the ramp and PTS immediately (this is what happened to our three). I have actually been 'behind the scenes' so to speak, as my dad (who was a farrier) used to take me with him to the kennels when he was on his rounds. They take all sorts - horses, cattle, sheep - and really the process is similar to what you would see in a slaughterhouse. What they can, they feed to hounds, and what they cant, they put into the incinerator. It isnt pretty...but someone has to do it; I think they offer a wonderful service.

It is when the hunt humanely PTS your horse & dispose of the carcase through feeding hounds or cremating. A grim but necessary service provided by all hunts across the country.

Bounty, I know what you mean about cremation. If there is anyway that it would be possible to bury Boo as her body can't be used for a 'useful' purpose then I think that is the approach I would choose. Why do these things always happen so close to Christmas

You know where I am if you want to chat. (((hugs)))

Earlier this year I had my girl cremated. I cost £560 to have this done and have her ashes returned to me. So when i feel the time is right i can skatter them somewhere that holds many memories of my special girl..
Only you will know what is right to do. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time...

If me and you've made decision that it time to go....... and that's the hardest thing to do.

I would do 'the deed' and if drugs keep horse comfortable, keep with drugs. The weather for next 10 days will be coming from south west, so NO frost.
So DEFO look into getting hole dug and keeping at home, if not pratical, if was me, i would get hunt service in pdq.

It just me, cos i would get very, very upset having to look after B know 'the deed' needs to be done.........

as i say HUGE HUG

I think you are being very strong and sensible, it is far better to make arrangements and know what to expect, as others have said the hunts round us dont generally feed horse meat but do a very dignified job from start to finish.
As much as it would be lovely to bury your horse if it is not a practical solution given the ground conditions i would choose to let the hunt incinerate over the smaller companys, the hunt round us are fantastic and dont expect you to be there when they remove the body.
Big hugs xx

oh my god i was only saying if its only a personal opinion then why you all having ago at me?
SORRY I DIDNT KNOW I WAS BEING NASTY?

TBH, it's bad enough having to have a much loved horse pts, without thoughtless comments being posted.
It may have only been a personal comment as you say. I suggest it's a personal comment that you should keep to yourself at this present time.

im sorry i didnt know i was being thoughtless
iv never set out to hurt anyone and yes iv
never had to go thru this terrible time and im sorry. what else can i say

thinking of you x

Sorry to hear of your sad news....

I lost my old boy on Boxing Day nearly 2 years ago....my wonderful vet shot him - with the deepest care, tact and without any distress whatsoever to him, and the kennelman came for him. He was unbelieveably kind - his words to me where that "he is in safe hands now" - and he absolutely was....

The hunts tend to incinerate/cremate, but rest assured, they have the utmost respect for the animals that they handle, dead or alive.

It is the saddest time but also a gift - I hope that someone loves me enough to let me go when my time comes and ease my pain. Am sure that I speak for many when I say that our thoughts are with you.....

PS. The hunt staff are ever so used to weeping women, so don't worry!!!

Sammie, don't worry about it! I get foot in mouth syndrome sometimes too

As far as I am aware my local hunt don't have an incinerator anymore anyway, because the cost to upgrade it in keeping with defra's ever ridiculous legislation was just not feasible. The huntsman I would like to use is from my local hunt however, so I guess I would have to speak to him about where she would go after that, if I do end up having to go that route.

This hasn't even really hit home to me yet, and it already hurts so much. I'm dreading the moment when it finally hits me.

All my horses have gone to the hunt. TBH I think its a bit sick to send them off to be incinerated and get a bucket full of ashes back.. or their foot yuck

Then it depends on faith and opinion, but I would rather my horse be consumed and run with the hounds than rot slowly and be eaten by worms and bacteria or be stuck in an industrial incinerator

Maybe a viking type pyre outside would be an option, but I don't want to smell my horse cooking either....

I'd ring and talk to your hunt as he will tell you what they can do. Cost is generally a donation, but probably around £100 if they cannot use the horse for food.

Additionally I would always have my horses shot by the hunt as injection is truly horrific IMHO. I watched our livery's pony be put down and was far more trauma than shooting. I don't want their last memory to be injections.

if you dont mind me asking what one in your piccys is she?
bless her
im so sorry seriously i wasnt being rude or nasty it obviously came out so wrong and im so sorry x

How sensible of you Bounty. I am so sorry to hear this is what is now needed. Having been there a few times, twice in the last 18 months, I have some idea where you are coming from. We are fortunate in being able to use either a good hunt or an excellent knacker firm. The remains have never been important to us, but why not have Boo cremated and bury his ashes with the body of your other horse?

The guy that picked up Mazzie after the accident charged £300 for pick up and cremation. He did, however, cremate her before I knew if I needed post-mortem, which fortunately I didn't.

You are doing the right thing in making sure everything is as organised as it can be, and not callous at all.

So sorry to hear you had to make this difficult decision!

I've always found my local vets very helpful, they should have a list of various options available locally and may even know approximate costs (nice vets may even offer to make the phone calls for you).

I'm snapping with the others.

Bounty, I know how hard this is for you. As others have said, if you can, ring the Hunt; if you can't get a friend to do it (or one of us will for you).

Sending you many and many hugs, C.x

My horse was on bute when I had him put to sleep. We took him to the kennels. He went with another who was also on bute. They put him down there and he wasn't fed to the hounds as he had medication but they incinarted (sp) him as they have the facilty to do so. Many hunts collect dead stock so they have to have another way of disposal rather than feeding everything to the hounds, otherwise the hound would be rather on the plump side.
Give them a call and find out.
Most of ours have been put down here and then the hunt take them away. Our vet organises this.
Sorry you are having to go through this. If you are anything like me the decision is harder than actually having it done.

there are a lot to think about! but i always promised my horses the day they go they will be cremated and stay with me until the day i day witch i have done with my beautiful girl starR.I.P. i am sure the dogs will not be able to have your beautiful boo due to the medication him in. good luck my heart is with you. R.I.P boo!xxx

Bounty i am so sorry you are having to go through this.Just a thought but if the hunt came out and done the deed but cannot use for the hounds due to the drugs and you cannot bury at home due to the wet ground, what about having a cremation and have the ashes returned and then in the spring scattering the ashes down with Cybele.

Sorry that you're having to contemplate this Bounty. I lost one of my horses quite unexpectedly three weeks ago and found the service from these people very good. They are near Cheltenham.

http://www.equineandpetservices.co.uk/home.html

I was told that as my horse had been on bute cremation was the only option as burial is not permitted under some government legislation regarding the classification of pets - not quite sure of the in's and out's of this as I didn't go into it - maybe another HHO'er is more clued up.

Just a quick note to say thanks to everyone who has posted, and all of your kind words and thoughts. And I'm sorry that most of you who have posted have all been through the same thing

Happier times :-

With everyone else, hunt every time, and I'd bury her on the land if I could. I've heard some tales of returned ashes not being the animal that was cremated, and that would bother me more than just the hunt having her without using her.

So very sorry, she has such a lovely face.......... heartbreaking for you.............

She is lovely, full stop

It is images of her face that I will be holding on to though - her lovely, big QH-style bottom has wasted away to nothing.

I feel betrayed - her neck has always been exquisite and I loved it - it was so strong, yet so softly muscled, if that makes sense? How can it be the thing that is causing so much pain and dehabiltation?!!?

I've written about three replies, and they don't say what I want, so in brief, you're right.
It doesn't make any sense to lose a horse too soon, ever.
Poor girl and poor you............
