Horse hunting.....either I’d forgotten how awful it is, or it’s got worse

It’s not so much persuading her to buy the horse that cribs it’s persuading her not to discount a horse too quickly , she needs to go and see potential horses, to get a feel what she can and cannot compromise on.
Not just discount just like that , if you do that you may miss the horse of a lifetime , and going to visit a few will help you sought out what you are really looking for .

I’ve known many a horse that cribs. I know what cribbing is. And as soon as I see in an ad that it cribs, I discount it straight away.

It could be the next badminton winner. I really don’t care. If it cribs, it’s Not For Me.

There are millions of horses in the world that don’t crib, so I’ll hang on and buy one of those.

It would be a waste of both the sellers time and mine for me to go there, try it and say ‘oh actually, what a lovely horse! But I still don’t want a cribber’ and walk away.

And I don’t agree I also have known many cribbers it really is no problem . But your possible loss will be possibly somebody else’s gain your never know without visiting.
I wish you well in your horse hunt though . For what it’s worth I’ve always bought the best horse I can afford young ( usually unbroken) although I do practise what I preach the only horse I have brought broken had sweetitch another vice, hence I could afford it , it went in to event novice and was the soundest horse I’ve ever owned , and I got offered several times decent money for it in both the Eventing world and dressage world. I never regretted buying him with sweetitch although it did take a lot of management as I knew it was the only reason I managed to get him and afford him.

My concern with cribbing is the very clear link to ulcers, if they do crib I would want to scope, if they have ulcers there is often an underlying physical reason, if there is a physical reason it will not be suitable even if it has been doing the job, this season is possibly going to prove tricky without them competing to check if they are fit for purpose.

Have you looked at Irish horse imports they have a few that might be of interest ?

Sorry I really was trying to help , there lies your problem though you discount too quickly. (FWIW Irish horse imports have a great reputation.)
I hope you prove me wrong though and find a perfect horse within your budget .

They don’t have THAT good a reputation!! They are quite rude and brisk, buy on masse from auction and resell quickly. They have no real good background on the horses. I can quite see why they wouldn’t suit Patterdale as they won’t hand hold and present horses without normal young horse issues.

They are a place to go for experienced buyers willing to accept some risk. And a convenient place to go. But the better ones there are 6k plus for raw horses, which we have already established ‘is a rip off’ ?
 
Just seen a nice one on FB , not quite hitting all your boxes . But worth a look . 15.1 ISH grey mare , only 4 . But nice type . Priced at £5950 , by next year I’m sure you’d have her ready for an 80/90

RIP off is very harsh . 6k for a raw talented youngster is not steep, they have a reputation for a very good eye for a horse.
And they have some very cheap ones at the moment probably admittedly all Ror I haven’t really looked but it was just a suggestion.
There is nothing in it for me when I try to help but still you shoot me down, and Irish horse imports for that matter who for dealers dealing in raw young horses have a very good reputation even in the likes of dodgy dealers .
Happily I’m not buying a horse though I have my perfect horse , I really do hope Patterdale finds hers also .

I just don’t want an average horse with unknown history sold by slightly rude people for a vastly inflated price.

Apparently you’re not even allowed to try them?

They have quite a few bad reviews...

I’m hardly shooting you down, I’m just saying that I do not want a cribber. My personal preference is that they are a big NO for me. And you can’t accept that, I’m not sure why.
I don’t judge anyone for buying a cribber, if it’s what you want then buy it. It’s just not what I want. And I’m not going to spend thousands of pounds on something that I don’t want, that would be insane.

I’m finding this undertone of ‘if I discount any horse with a vice or don’t want to pay £10k for something lame and crap then I’m ungrateful/too fussy/a cheapskate/clueless’ from a few posters a bit unkind tbh.

Paying 10k for something lame or crap would be madness who on Earth is suggesting that?
people are just trying to help!
 
No one is vilifying you for not wanting to pay 10k for a lame/crap horse - those horses being advertised is nothing new.

All people are saying is you might need to modify your expectations of what the nice, sound, proven horses are selling for. And if you aren’t prepared to pay the price they are selling for then you need to be patient (and move quick when one appears), or modify your list of must haves and consider a vice, a behavioural issue, a raw horse etc etc.
 
Is a TB out? Horse quest 231070 may be worth a message, jumped around a BE100 albeit being sold as a hunter. I do think if they get to 12 and haven’t broken then they are doing well!

A year ago I bought Deedee well within your budget. She was ready to event at BE90 but the event she was booked in for was cancelled. But she had showjumped a bit, XC schooled, done a few tests. Lovely movement, nice temperament, huge jump and no vices. This year when I was looking for Toby, anything like her was costing 10K+.

I do think the market has gone mad and it's a bit like the loo rolls - everyone is panicking as they lose out on horses and is compromising too much on the 'horses are worth what people will pay' logic. But I don't really agree. Sure a bog roll might be 'worth' a tenner to a person with none and a case of the runs.... but it is still a rip off.

Toby kind of fell into my lap. I had basically stopped looking as I was tired of viewing utterly ordinary or even crappy over priced horses. The markey WILL crash and if I had not bought Toby I would not be bothering looking anymore.

I wasn’t prepared to pay a tenner for self raising flour two months ago, and I’m not prepared to pay £15k for a horse now. Or settle for one with vices or behavioural problems but get it RIGHT NOW for the bargain price of £8k ?

I’d rather wait thanks! And if not rushing out to panic buy an average horse for megabucks because ‘that’s the market’ (this week...) makes certain posters think I’m a cheapskate or expecting the world to subsidise my hobby, then so be it. I couldn’t give a monkeys ?
 
ive been looking for going on 5 months. i think I've found one, although shes not exactly what I'm looking for shes the best I'm going to get although I though I had found a perfect schoolmaster that when I got there the dealer sprung on us after I had rode him that he had only been broken In 6 months!. the most frustrating thing is when you have found one paid the deposit etc and then they decide to keep it :(
 
Patterdale - My RI was trying to persuade me to buy a horse she teaches who is fabulous. Over my budget but possibly not yours. Whereabouts are you? The horse is in Cheshire. PM if you want more info.
