ok my ebs is on deep litterr but now theres less grass shes staying in more with hay but shes weeing for england and my deeep litter thats ment to last for 10 days last for about 5 :| at about £9-10 per bag the other normaal shaving are worse but i was thinking in the long run it would maybe be cheaper to get rubber instead or if anyone else as any other ideas?

Does she really need to stay in? We are on the Oxon/Bucks border and although our fields look really brown and bare the horses all seem to be doing really well on them and haven't dropped weight. The rain has also helped and the grass has started growing already.

Could you hay in the field?

I use rubber mats but also have a full bed on them. If you just had mats you need to have very good stable drainage otherwise you end up with pools of urine under the mats which will need frequent lifting and drying out.

Why does your deep litter only last for a short number of days? Deep litter is meant to be pretty much permanent. Are you semi-deep littering your horse?

Its kind of 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

We have one mare who's on a deep bed (not a proper deep bed but big banks), and one gelding who trashes the place so he has literally a sprinkling. They both have rubber mats underneath them.

Our mare has big deep banks, a much shallower sprinkling in the middle, which we just sweep out every day. At the end of each week we sweep (well, swept, this is only in winter) the whole lot out and open a new bag and dump it in.

Our gelding gets fully swept out every day, but obviously we then have to put new in every day. Neither method is really cheaper than the other!

The thing I would say is that you are paying ALOT for shavings. We pay around £5.50 for a bale of bedmax (which is good!).

Good luck! They can be little buggers! ;)

for gods sake - your horse is annoying you because YOU cant find her decent grazing and have to bring her in - omg !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

um no cause she the people wont put there horses out in the rain and she wont stay out on her own :@ god knows why guna gets on my nerves
and no its deep litter but it says to take the wet out every 10 days? might be wrong?

rubber matting is good, but you still have to put other bedding in, so I'd say deep litter on rubber matting out of the window and you can still skip out everyday, but you still have to put clean bedding in. I'm not a great believer in deep litter as you can get mice and rats in the outer edges.

Ignore the w*nkers being rude. You have your own reasons for doing wht you want with your horse! Top showjumpers keep their horses in 24/7, its hardly horse abuse...

I would scrap the deep litter and go for what we do with my mare (see previous post on this question)

OP if you titled your post with something a long the lines of 'help needed with deep littering' you may find people are able to offer more help and advise on the situation.

At the end of the day it's not your mares fault if she can't get out into the field to do her business so she's hardly doing it on purpose to annoy you.

ive so shut up so far but this post is winding me up
- Her horse is annoying her???????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Poor bloody horse - get him out in a herd and let him be a bloody horse !!!!!

Like someone said a lot of competition horses stay in 24/7 and although it's not something I would consider I don't have a problem with someone else doing it if they choose. I just think if you had put a different title and worded your post slightly people would probably offer more advise.

Good luck on the deep littering, it's not something I have experience with so can't offer any advise sorry :)

A true deep litter bed shouldn't need removing for at least a month or more, but doesn't work well for wet mares!
I have heard good things about wood pellets and I know somepeople add a few unsaoked for really wet horses.
I always used a semi deep litter methos with my mare where I skipped out the poo and worst of the wet daily and then did a full clean at the weekends. I always add fressh shavings into the banks only and pull down an old bed for the floor. I find the shavings last longer and the older shavings are a bit heavier which gives a better coverage. I would often not add any shavings during the week and then replace one bank (approx 1/2 bag) after the full muck out. So it used between 1/2 - 1 bag a week.
Mares really are the worst!
