How are your fields? Rain ?

Despite being on clay mine are holding up well although I am keeping them in tonight as it has been relentless! It helps letting them have the whole field and they can bring themselves in so no hovering by the gate.

We are on clay and I currently have 4 on 6 acres which is boggy in places. They have been in since yesterday evening though due to the rain And I haven't ventured out yet to see what damage has been caused after today's downpour!

Can't remember it this wet this early in the season. I am on clay but my friend who is 5 miles away as he crow flies and is on chalk is Ok - makes such a difference. Can hear the rain outside - so depressing

Wet, but coping, except for this gateway between the two paddocks which I’ve had to shut off as it’s got dangerously deep and boggy, especially if they canter through. There is an alternative gate, but that’s much less convenient.

Just got two bags of crusher run delivered this morning. Will barrow those up, tip it into the gateway, rake it over and roll it. It’ll be sucked up into the mud and will soon firm it up.

What is crusher run?

Hope you’ve stayed dry overnight @BBP ? we had heavy rain until the early hours but this morning a good amount of the floodwater seems to have receded.

What is crusher run?
Crusher Run or hardcore is a 40mm down to dust construction material that is commonly used as foundations for a range of surfaces. Manufactured from crushed rock and stone dust the crusher run or hardcore is blended to provide a low-void content that tightly locks together.’

It’s cheap and readily available, and is easy to diy into gateways, the muddier the better. We get ours delivered in cubic metre bags. Tip it in, rake it, roll it, and it sets very well.

This is it going down in a walkway. Three years on, it’s grand.

We had an inch and a quarter of rain yesterday, the flood gates have been shut for a couple of days but the river is still rising and there are flooded roads all around us. I'm feeling rather pleased that we are home for Christmas instead of travelling to relatives. Just need some wellies for the dog!

Yesterday the field was a disaster area, water on the surface that could not seep away, a lake down where it should be draining into a stream and rain water generally running every where. Last night, when we went to bed, the wind got up and really howled around the house and this morning the sun is shining and water has drained and dried to a large extent. I can see new grass in the taped off areas. For one day hope has returned!!

A lot of people’s yards and fields here were underwater last night. Horses having to be rescued from stables and fields. My friends horses were knee deep in water when she got to them. Really hope all the flood water recedes today and not too much damage have been done for everyone :(

Im in Bucks and with yesterdays rain most villages around here are flooded or have had bad flooding and flash flooding! Yards, schools, tracks etc have been flooded :( I'm on clay and my fields spent most of this year growing, being topped and then left to grow thick dense grass to use as standing fogage (plus i didnt have a horse!) So my fields are WET, like walking on a wet sponge but holding up mostly due to the amount of grass.

I have decided to stable overnight though. I was doing the odd day/ night here and there as new horse is a wimp but sadly he will need to start coming in overnight now :(

the gallops next door are now... all down the lane instead. :( Don't think the racehorses will be doing a lot today. grim.

Relieved to hear you’re ok @BBP. The flood waters have receded here too, although we had 2 inches of rain fall yesterday onto saturated ground so as you can imagine, everywhere is a bit of a mess. The strength of the water in our field was so strong it swept away my big wooden showjump poles (the kind you can barely lift on your own!)

We’re lucky that our yard stayed dry and the horses are ok. A yard up the road flooded entirely and my OH was out on rescue missions in the tractor yesterday with the floodwater up to the bonnet ?

Now the cleanup operation starts for all the poor people in the village whose houses flooded ?

Storm Bella is brewing for Saturday night and Sunday morning. Winds at 40 mph it says on my computer's weather forecast. Just after having a couple of nice days, but the following week does look to be cold, dry and sunny so lets hope we can recover from the storm.

We are on heavy clay here and at the moment can't turn out except in a surfaced turn out pen. Even when hand grazing the horses sink into the ground. If the yard owner didn't manage the fields it would be just pure mud by now.

We have had the worst floods here for a very long time. Wonder if it has anything to do with the thousands of houses being built on a flood plain up river from us. A paddock that used to be owned by my BIL and his ex and which was a flood plain, was built up when the river was deepened and now it has been built on. These are the houses currently. Not sure if they will get flood insurance or for that matter mortgages.

It's down to planners to be more responsible regarding building on flood plains, or areas liable to flooding. Problem is the developers promise cheap housing and local facilities and bewitch councillors into giving planning permission. These days, with the knowledge of global warming, great care should be taken in choosing suitable areas for new housing developements.

I have used this - looks similar and has worked well:
Mot Type 2 is a crushed stone with extra dust similar to Crusher run, it usually contains finer material than type 1, being composed of fewer angular aggregate sizes also know as scalpings. Type 2 mot can be used for driveways, backfill material, paths and patio areas and to fill in pot holes and compacts down to a hard base.
