How much did you pay for your horse?

£2000 for my pony he was a school master and perfect for me at the time, came with everything, and luckly changed with me for what i wanted! he was a 10yo NF gelding. (now 14)
£5500 for a 6yo tb mare ready to jump newcommers egsacly what i wanted and still is! she came with a headcoller and leadrope. we think we paid £5000 for a head coller! nope she was worth every penny.

We paid 7000 for melly but shes perfect, 16.1 ISH school mistress cud compete at medium with the right rider but shes cud have a novice on her and she wouldnt care shes a confidence giver, can jump 1.10 as well with her eyes closed. Love her to bits bless her!!

last horse: £2500 inc all tack, inc spare, and loads of quality rugs, for dun welsh sec D mare, 12yrs, ride and drive, prof schooled, bombproof in traffic.

new horse: £3400 inc some tack, 17.2hh ID x WB, 12yrs, done everything, SJ, dressage, XC, hunts with a very hard pack, jump anything, Totally bombproof and safe for the complete beginner yet will go beautifully for a rider.

Big horse was free - he is the loveliest horse you could wish for. Got the youngster for free as we bought her mum and didn't know she was expecting a foal. Little grey cost £4500 10 years ago(!) and big mare cost £3000 5 months ago - best £3000 ever spent IMO.

Honey: 16hh IDxTB, bought her 7 years ago next month as a 3 1/2 year old from ireland for £2500 who has decent conformation, nice paces would have made a nice show horse if it wasn't for her LOU mark!! but she went to TB finals last summer, don't know what her full capabilities are as she was out of work for 3 years!
Carousel: got her about 4 or 5 years ago. sisters first pony, a 14hh welsh x somethin with tack and rugs, done all PC, 100% allways, perfect pony, got her for £1600 sold her for £4000 as a 10 year old with about £100 BSJA
Tiger: 16.2 10 year old KWPN, was goin to be sent to meat man, too long a story, but we got her for £400 and sold her as broodmare for £1500
Onyx: 16.1 IDxTB 8 year old, for him for £3750 and told he was ready to PN, turned out we don't think he ever had seen coloured fences!! he was mine when Honey was lame, had him for 2 1/2 years sold him, 2 summers ago for £6500 with 30BD points and had done a bit of everything

I paid £850 for mine at an auction, just saw him walk and trot in the ring, saw his face and melted!

(I know, it might seem like a stupid thing to do but I had two very experienced people with me who gave me the nod to buy!)
I gave him a clean sheet, treated him with kindness and respect and got nothing but the same back from him. After i'd had him 18 months I found out his history; he'd fractured his first owners jaw, her husband wanted him shot, he went to a dealer, went to a young teenager who was as argumentative and feisty as he was. Her instructor told her family he was dangerous and they would be better off getting something safer. And this is when I had the good fortune of meeting him.
He was nothing but sweet from day one. Is a safe hack, hunts, does ok prelim tests, placed at showing, competes on RC teams at qualifiers, and despite his old owners saying he hated it- he absolutely loves show jumping! We had one sticky period due to saddle and back problem but that was a year ago and he's gone from strength to strength since then.

I can honestly say that the Gods were shining on me the day I found Mr D

I paid £400, yup just £400 for my fella (16 hh ID x Hanno)when he was 2yrs. The dealer didnt realise that Flagmount ID bloodlines were good! I was offered £5000 for him last summer but said no way! We now work at novice level affiliated. Woo!

We paid quite a lot for mine I suppose but horse prices on this forum seem a pretty touchy subject so im not going into how much again

Needless to say, imo he's been the best purchase we ever made in terms of both his talent and the fact we're so well suited in personalities.

He's a PSG dressage horse with around £800 BSJA and quite a few BE points. 16.1 grey hanoverian x connemara and 100% in every way
laugh.gif
He was sold to me by my trainer (on behalf of another client of hers) as a dressage school master to help me learn some of the more advanced movements and he's not just doing this, he's giving me back my confidence in jumping too
laugh.gif
I dont really care whether people would value him the same as we paid since he's priceless to me

I paid £3000 for my 2 year old Selle Francais mare.
By Isky de Baussy out of Izarra de Frely, having Jalisco B on both sides.

ETS: Gosh after reading what others paid maybe I paid too much. What do you all think? Although its too late now!!!

I don't think it matters what you pay for a horse so long as it's what you want, it does what you want it to do and you can afford it (without having to resort to stealing out of bin
wink.gif
).
If I had loads of money I'd buy the best horse I could...I'm hoping to buy the best horse I can afford if one ever materialises. If I see one cheaper that I fall for and is right for me then great.
My pony cost my parents £200 but that was back in 1982
smile.gif
He was priceless if only for his amazing ability to escape from his field and track down the only apple in the district being left on a window ledge to cool down.

Ah, but I've usually taken what I could get and tried to make something I like out of them!! Nearly gave up on PF; she made me swear more than any horse ever has... except perhaps Antifaz, and if they hadn't paid me to ride him, I'd probably have given up on him too! I love him now though.

I don't think I would; I'd be terrified of ruining it and everyone knowing it was my fault!!

well I have paid various amounts

My oldest AQHA gelding with wonderful bloodlines was $1,200 as a 3 yr old (they wanted $2,000 but they lhad many to sell so they worked with me)
we got his brother for $1,000 as a yearling. Actually a pretty high price around here for a very young horse with no training
my Shetland was bought for $100 as a baby
and my mini was bought also $100 as a 4 month old.

You can get wonderful horses here for less than $2,000
Show quality, trained, and very calm.
The horses here that usually go for the huge amounts are either Western horses trained fo cattle cutting (even Geldings go for tens of thousands) and exotic breeds such as Fresians that start at around $10,000 as babies (with decent bloodlines)

I can see your point PF and thats what Ive done in the past. My last 4 horses before the one I have now were youngsters that I brought on.

It was my dresage trainer who convinced me however, that there was nothing wrong with us buying a school master to help ME (rather than the other way round). I'd switched disciplines from BSJA to dressage and wanted a horse to do BD on.

Im not ashamed to say I didnt produce him but he's teaching me so so much. I now have a good feeling for advanced movements, I know how to ask for them correctly because my horse is technically quite difficult (hes a schoolmaster but far from push button, you have to ask right).

So when I do eventually look for another, I might well look for a youngster again as I now feel more capable of doing it some justice. If we'd bought a young dressage horse for me at the time, it would have been completly a case of the blind leading the blind and the horse could never have reached its potential.

And as someone else said, it doesnt matter what you pay as long as its the horse for you
laugh.gif
And my boy is perfect in my eyes
laugh.gif

Yeah you're right I wouldn't want to get anything I would ruin. The best I could afford would have to mean best at x that I could afford (in my case hacking
wink.gif
). I wouldn't get a top eventing ability horse if I was pants and new to eventing. Plus if I got a 'better than my present ability' horse then I'd still want lessons so that I could improve up to their level which I think person I replied to is doing. Maybe in a few years of horse owning I'd like to buy something to make something out of but I'm a bit too inexperienced atm and wouldn't want to make a bodge. I'd love loads of advice though on how to improve any horse I owned.
I like the look of your Antifaz btw.

Derbyshire at the mo. But should be moving to London in the next couple of months (pending us finding a suitable house where the landlord doesnt mind dogs)

He even has some nice pink exercise bandages all ready and waiting

im going to be abrubt now! YOUR horse is priceless of any age, size, gender, scope, ability etc. you bought thast horse (i hope) for ur enjoyment love and pleasure. can u put a prize on my horse? NEVER! give me £200 or £200,000. i'd still say NO WAY!!! i bought him for a reason and if u question how much u spent on a horse then may be, just maybe they are not the one for u. superficial. thats a word that means so much to everybody else but u, when u finlally find the horse that u love for them it doesnt seem so much to you. a horse is what u wll pay for them... its very tragic to see u asking everyone else for an opinion when i fact its u thats doubting.

Now thats a post I agree with 100%. I think a lot of people rush into buying a horse without considering that this could, potentially, be a very long bond. Its so so important that the horse doesnt just fit what you want to do / achieve (even if that is just having fun), but that he or she has a personality that you can get along with and really gel with.

Looking back, I know now that Ive never geled with any of my other horses the way I have this one but I was much younger when I had them and most were rush buys I think.

Someone could hand me a blank cheque and I would, without hesitation, say no. I had an offer on him not too long after we bough him that would have netted us quite a large profit but it was never even considered. My horse has zero value on him because he's not, and never will be, for sale. He's one of the family and he's my best friend

God If someone gave me a blank cheque Chloe would be gone in a jiffy! She's sweet and all, and I do really like her, but I know I could find something just as good as her personality wise which can do much more! You never know, the whitakers could be selling a couple....
wink.gif

Of course I would find it hard, but not that hard that I wouldn't be able to!

Maybe I'm just stingey LOL!?!?

Paid £3000 for mine. I bought her cos she was a grey mare who looked like my last grey mare! I wanted a hunter and bought a 4 year old tbxid that had done NOTHING!!
She hunts now though, what a star! And jumping!! Woo hoo! Glad I'm not near the Cotswolds or Weezy would snaffler her!!

Finni evented up to Intermediate (well, did one
wink.gif
) and has a point at novice (did mostly PN & N) Is anyones ride, but grumpy git on the ground.

£1350 + lots of rugs/tack & dressage saddle.

He was 13 when I bought him and has history of colic and injuries and suspect he'd fail vetting.

Took a chance on him as his old owner was totally straight with me about his problems (even gave me all his vet bills for last year!) and have never regretted it
