I hunted with a different hunt on Saturday and was shocked how much they repeatedly handed us all more drink, a lady in a car full of sprits followed us and at every rest stop we all got a stiff drink. I know you don’t have to drink it but was taken back at how much it was pushed.

The hunt I’m a member with we would have one or two before kicking off and there is always hipflasks going around but never drunk people on horses!!

Sorry I dont hunt so cant answer that, but your question made me laugh! (i have the image in my head) God, that sounds really irresponsible, im all for a good time but drunk people on horses? hmmm .....dont feel pressured to drink more than you want to by these people, stick to your guns x

lol, last year at a boxing day meet one of the field was so gone she couldnt open a gate!

she was trying to lean down but kept swaying and in the end the OH offered to open it for her and told her ''she should probably call it a day''.

Its the same with shoots, some will literally hook you up to a sloe gin I.V. personally i think its one of the stupidest things ive ever seen.

Bloke I used to know couldn't get round a course of show jumps without sinking a quart of vodka. I always used to wonder what was the point, if it terrified you that much that you had to get absolutely blotto.

As little as possible, or I'd be peeing all day.

Unless of course I had to drink copiously through sheer terror :D

Thats what I thought - I would off and behind a bush every 5 mins :D

And doesnt drinking require one hand off the reins?? My horse has been hunting once and I would never take one hand off the reins while mounted  - it was very scary with both hands on the reins lol

Usually way too much- at the meet, almost every time we pull up... the best part of the day tho is when the day is done, ponies tucked up in bed and we congregate in the pub and relive the day!!! Country persuits are big drinking affairs, and I love it! Hic

Depends – Rockwood seem to be more of a lawn meet/drinking pack than the Meynell and I’m also under the bad influence of my mother with Rockwood – so more with them than Meynell... but not a loads (wait until after to have a good drink!!).

When I first started hunting about 20 years ago there was quite a strong drinking bunch – much much more than now, with the rockwood anyway. My parents included in that bunch!! My mum had a livery/friend and he used to turn up half cut with a saddle flask full of whisky + a little “panda pop” bottle of whisky!! He once had a pee down the saddle while still sat on the horse!!! Ewwww!! My mum was not impressed!! He was/is a hardcore alco, but still!

I have been really pickled at times, usually I am just a-nicely-glowing :D

Typical is 2 - 4 stirrup cups before heading off, and no, I think nothing of peeing behind a hedge!

Ha I once rolled off at the meet! It was new years day and I was probably just topping up form the night before.... but what a fab day!!!

Daddy Dave always says he will go out again when he can find a bunch that drink like the old school rockwood. I reckon the Blankney are a good drinking pack, hunt suppers are always fun! x

Ha, Daddy Steve says there's not enough blokes go to chat to now - not enough blokes but too many puffs!! :o

can remember when DD had been with DS and Stuart wth the readyfeild and he got really drunk back at ours - he was vomming outside and his mum and dad had to come and pick him (and Bertha!) up! :o

We are pretty tame really!!

When i read this it made me laugh and i need a laugh at the moment. I could imagine the field being pissed as newts.

Yes i agree it may not be very responsible ( oh sod it i have just spilt my wine) but sometimes it doesn't hurt.

Any must go as i want to finish of my bottle of wine

Cheers everyone

not much at all really by the sounds of it... I'll have one or maybe 2 at the meet, then just a bit of hipflasks as they go round. I might have a bit more if I'm not driving.

OH, however, was teetotal until he started hunting - not that he drinks any more than I do now.

Quite alot...great for courage!!

Honestly I dont think I ever felt drunk in charge,I think what you drink is soon absorbed by sweating, adrenaline and in my case hanging on to a very strong mare in the field!

yes your dad has a lot to answer for, although after that first day with the readyfield @ 20yr ago (massive hedges and on my little connemara pony) all i can remember is what fun it was (and trying not to fall off) nothing to with the jumps but the bottle of whisky in horsebox beforehand!!

Ha, because it was someone's christening, it was about 8pm, they had been debating whose horse could jump the highest and just chucked poor Bertha in a spare stable.
The men always have the most fun though don't they?
Got to say this week I was going to a hunt ball, and was only doing half a day, but I managed to sink a few at the meet and then knock a few back in the field, I always think I ride more forwards when I've had one or two.
Sarah- until I came to Ciren and did my teamchases without you lot, I hadn't ridden a team chase course without having a port- the hedges seem a lot smaller when I was with you!!

I do remember one meet many years ago when we met at kennels in the fog, we didn't move off 'til nearly one and lost about 70% of the field in the first field we went in!
