how much do you weigh and how big is your horse

I'm 5ft 5 and just on 11 stone. But I'm in the process of trying to lose it, at my heaviest I was 11st 6. My pony is a 14.2hh MW who doesnt struggle and has bucked me off in excitement before.
 
5'8 and about 10 and a half stone.. my horse is 16.3.. i will quit happily ride anything 15.2 upwards. would ride smaller but not for long on a regular basis :)
 
Im 12.5 stone and 5'7 and ride my 4 which are
15.3hh Tb
16.1hh Tb
16.3hh Tb
and a 16.2hh IDXTB

They all carry me fine and with mine i'd soon be on my arse with my lot if I was to heavy!!One of them is very cold backed so I have to tell him i'm only 7 stone when I get into the saddle!!!:D

I also ride a 15hh lightweight Tb and he carrys me fine!!
 
Well I was 12st3lb and riding my 15.2hh TB who I've had for 9yrs (and been near enough the same weight for most of that!) and a 17hh TB I've had for 2yrs BUT since being with OH (2yrs this Oct) I'm roughly 13st7lb, at 5ft11/6ft and both horses still carry me fine. Though to be fair the 15.2hh is 21 and semi retired

I am about 14 and a half stone on a good day, love to be a lot less wouldn't we all....??

I ride a 15 hand Welsh Cob, he is a very chunky boy and has no trouble carrying me at all, feel sometimes like he doesn't know I am there but he is incredibly strong (I think anyway)

Keep on going, the exercise is good for you, just bought some roller skates, so exercising can be fun.....

the reason the cat litter is hard to carry is because its carried
by your arms.........child via back no comparison

Shetlands used to be ridden by fully grown male shepherds, they're sturdier than they look. I'm sure it's around the same case with other ponies/horses etc unless otherwise stated.
 
Hmm, I am impressed by all you slender people who are happy to give your weight. I weigh about 10 stone and am 5'3" and ride a 15.1 welsh section D and 15 connemara. I do think though that there are more heavier people who are too embarrassed to admit their weight and |I sympathise as someone who struggles to maintain myself at 10 stone!

Have been reading through this and am amazed that it took this long for someone to say this!! I agree completely. If you are 16 stone - then that is what is sitting on the horse's back - no matter what your instructor or friends say..

even if thats true then my horse can carry me on the 20% theory pluss another stone and she has never had any problems with me and we have a very good relationship

what do u base this shock on? even if i ride like a sack of patotoes im still below her weight limit of 17.6

Child is on back,litter in a back pack-which muscles are being used? ;)
The ONLY difference is that the child is holding their own weight making it easier to carry them.

Of course weight is weight,the difference with someone who rides light is their ability to let the horse get on with it's job.
A person who rides light is still their weight,but wil not hamper the horse as much as a lighter rider who sits like a sack of spuds whic is why it is important.
I did say "as lng as the horse is not asked to carry more then it is capable of" ;) and very much doubt anyone would argue that ridign light means they can over burden their horse!

Cant someone just ask a simple question, i.e. "How much do you weigh and how big is your horse?" without it turning into this saga?!

FWIW, OP, I weigh 11 stone, 3 pounds (just weighed myself). I ride at a Riding School. Some of the horses I ride: Bonnie Coblet and Albert are 14.2-ish. Dawi is 15.2. Pally is 15.3. You might very well have seen pictures of them in my lesson reports.

To all those who have commented on suitability. Do I look to big for them? Does it look like their poor little legs are going to collapse under them? Do they look unhappy? Nope.
 
I agree to a certain extent that 'weight is weight', however Ive seen quite a few skinnies that cant ride either side of their horse banging up and down on its back and balancing themselves on its mouth.

Ive also seen 'bigger' riders that sit beautifully with an independant seat.

I know which one I would rather see.
