Hi all,

Please help:)

My girl is hardy, a good doer and is very furry. I'm not much of a rugger and usually rug roughly as follows:

Day (turned out)
heavy rain - rainsheet (only cause she takes so long to dry really)
wet and below 5 degrees - rainsheet,
below about 1 degree/zero- light/medium weight (170g)
below about -4 - medium weight (220g)
Blizzards or any colder than about -8 - heavyweight combo (350g)

Night (stabled - American barn with 20+ horses kicking out heat)
below about 5 degrees - fleece
zero and below - lightweight stable rug (110g)
minus 5 and below - medium/heavy weight (220g)

Yesterday I gave her a blanket clip. She is still very furry on her bum, back and legs but has a clipped neck, tunny and halfway up her sides.

I don't usually clip her but she was sweating just standing still. How much would you adjust her rugging to compensate? I popped a fleece on last night and a 170g rug on today as I thought she might feel it more first day, but not sure how much extra to rug really.:o

Any advice much appreciated:D

Id make sure she has rugs with necks especially when its colder and wet, and maybe just up the weight one. So from your rainsheet go to a light fill rug of maybe 150/200gsm.

When I used to full clip my pony she used to have a thick under-rug shoved on as well as her heavy weight, and when it was really cold and snowing another rug on top, to keep her toasty but she lived out all year and hunted once a week.

My Hot boy had a full clip a week ago and has been in a light weight with a 100g underrug, no neck... he has been toasty warm under this combo... maximum he has in the depths of winter is a mediumweight turnout with full neck and the 100g underrug and he is always warm... listen to your horse and stick your hand under their rugs to judge... even 'toasty' is too warm IMO but I felt mean just sticking a lightweight on my totaly naked boy!

I would stick to how you had been rugging and just up it if she feels cold or looks tucked up. My cob has thick fur and was sweating just standing in the field so today has a low Irish clip, I have popped a rain sheet with neck on him tonight as its wet and windy, if it was still and dry he would be out with no rug. He only had a medium weight on last year in the realy cold blizzard, but on the plus side he lost some of his blubber.

Thank you for asking this question as I was wondering this the other day!

My cob happily lives out 24/7 naked no matter what the weather, but I am planning on clipping soon as he gets so sweaty when worked, and I don't want him to catch a chill when it becomes cold.

I am planning on doing a blanket type clip I think, but only have standard neck rugs. Do you think I should get some rugs with necks too? He has quite a thick mane but worried his neck is going to get cold!

Mine is full clipped, and lives out. He has a MW on the moment with no neck, and he's been absolutely fine. He's a bit fuzzy on his neck, but I only clipped him to get the worst yakkishness off - happy for him to grow a bit of coat back before it gets too freezing

My TB had a hunter clip Saturday as she hates the transition to winter coat (tries to bite when groomed etc as soon as it starts growing) and she is generally a very warm horse anyway. Due to this unusually warm weather she has been so warm it needed to come off. She normally goes in a 200g combo when clipped but she was almost over heating in it! That night she was back in a rain sheet as was so so warm and I would rather her a bit cold than too hot. I have now opted for a 200g no neck rug as I feel terrible leaving her in a Rain sheet fully clipped! I figured that way she can cool down if needed with her neck being bare.

So the best thing to do is go with what your horse is telling you, there are horses on my yard unclipped with heavier rugs on than my mare right now but I'm not going to let her boil.

I gave my mare a full clip a month ago and she went from being in a rain sheet to a full neck 100g. She has been toasty warm and lives out 24/7.
