To break someones horse in?
Working on it for about an hour a day 5 times a week?

woman near us charges £60 a week....the horse goes to her aswell

,depends on your abilities really and how far you intend to bring it on after being broken???

Depends on the horse and what ground work (if any) it has done prior to being asked to back it. I also don't think you can put time limits on young horses. Is someone asking you to 'break' their horse then?
 
It would be kept at home, and I would go and work him everyday.
lungeing/long reining/backing and the hack him out for a bit.

The owners not very confident so she doesn't want to do it herself.
He was a rescue pony, until she got him a couple of years ago. 14hh 6yr old
 
I was gonna charge £10 hr per ridden horse but that was few yrs ago now,breaking is a risky business so it needs to be reflected in your price,i would go for £9 - £10 hr

No I don't 'know' Sophie, but have seen some of her more eyebrow raising posts and not forgetting the classic pic of her cantering round with an upside down Pelham in the horses mouth. I have no doubt she could 'break' a horse..............BREAK being the operative word!!! However from what I have seen of her post, I wouldn't trust her to back a rocking horse, let alone pay her to do so.

Get off your high horse, grow-up and stop swearing. Do you know her by the way?

P.S. I have never claimed to be an expert, but look up to me if you wish (once you climb off your high horse obviously).

I think you'll find, sweetie, I am not the one here who appears to be on the 'high horse'. And I am grown up enough to realise that in the world of equestrianism (sorry for using big words... it means 'things to do with horses') none of us are experts.

Quite frankly I would rather handwash my family's dirty undies and sniff them to make sure they're fresh than take the time andeffort to look up some random 'chip on her shoulder, problem with the world' girl on an internet forum.

Sophie has repeatedly given people on this forum reason to believe she is lacking in general horse experience, let alone taking in a horse for breaking. Piebald's response was a bit harsh but I'm sure it sums up many people's initial reaction to reading this.
 
That was why I posted 'price dependant on experience'

I have not seen much to give me the confidence that this service would be worth an awful lot.

I have broken several horses in over the past couple of years, one of which was Bear who was broken in from start to finish in 4 weeks.
He has never had any problems.

I broke my welsh A in when I was 15.

I helped Break in a 17hh hunter x when I was 15 too.
Thats just half of the them.

Im not looking to charge too much.

Unless you know me then what F***ing right do you have to say those things?

I had always used snaffles.
1 of the ponies I broke in last year is now doing brilliantly with a 9 year old girl. Infact she was at the show last weekend, and came 3rd out of 13 ponies in the 1st ridden class!

So F***ing get a life!

I have helped back and break horses too, but wouldnt consider myself a chargable asset as I just dont know enough.... but if you do.... then thats a different matter

Personally i would charge around £20-30 a hour. Depends on the horse and the nature really.
In no dig at you, i do believe that it takes an experienced person to do such a thing, if it was my baby i was sending away i would want to make sure they were complete professionals.
 
If you are going to charge you will need a freelance trainers insurance and care, custody and control. This costs from around £300pa. There is no way I would undertake starting a pony without this as any problems could leave you open to being sued.
 
I would be going to the horse on a daily basis with owner present.
I was thinking £10 an hour.
Its not set in stone yet.

Gives me something to do. And I enjoy breaking in!
 
If you are going to charge for this service, are you prepared to take responsibility for any problems that occur when breaking this horse? Let me explain a little more clearly - by charging for your time and offering a particular service in return, you are stating that you are capable and experienced enough to deal with pretty much every eventuality that occurs. If the horse turns out less then perfect at the end (i am not saying it will or not - just theoretical), say for example it broncs or bolts everytime someone gets on board, then you could be held responsible for this and therefore responsible for the cost of putting it right.

I know it always sounds great doing friends a favour - but that always ends up so much more sour if it goes wrong.

I think I quite clearly stated this above. It was posts and pics that Sophie posted on here. I very much doubt anyone would try to make themselves look incapable. So given that several of Sophies posts have done just that, on can only assume that she is rather lacking in experience.
