How to tell if she has ulcers without scoping?

Went to a vet talk recently where the vet had said that the only way to check if a horse had ulcers was to scope. Afterwards when he was asking for any questions someone said an animal communicator had told her her horse said he had ulcers. I'm still not sure if they were a plant.

I can’t help but think A vet would say that as they want to money for scoping! They can’t see if they have back ulcers even with a scope

Be careful with your insurance, you have now alerted them to an existing condition. There is now a 12 month clock ticking if you need treatment & some sort of preexisting condition on your notes
Does that apply even if it doesn’t turn out to be anything other that a moody mare? All I said to them was that I may take her to the vets to be scoped and does the insurance cover that if I did?

I know! This happened to me, someone I knows horse went through the ulcer route, so I thought to myself , I better ring and check just in case! They sent me an exclusion out 4 days later? I only asked! ?

Omg that’s horrendous! I hope you queried it!!? I honestly hate insurance companies. Don’t think I am going to bother renewing when it comes up! X

I did and I was told if I wanted to renew my policy with them then they would exclude ulcers! ? needless to say I went with someone else x

My horse reacted positively overnight to an ulcer supplement. I immediately called the vet and asked for a scoping to confirm, before forking out for the gastroguard.
I’d recommend using the stuff for hind gut, can’t remember the name, alongside GG to avoid having to do it all twice.

Is it sucralflex? Cant remember

If you've alerted your insurance company to possible ulcer symptoms, it will almost definitely be excluded (and from any policy with another provider as they cross- reference) so if you are planning on scoping, you're best doing it sooner rather than later.

That being said, after having a horse who's been through numerous scopes in the past (and is now managed on a low-level of Peptizole), I'm pretty sure I won't scope ever again. It's really stressful for them. The overnight starving must be awful for a horse already suffering with ulcers. I know insurance companies won't pay for Omeprazole without evidence from scoping, but to be honest, once you've paid the excess and for the cost of the scoping, if your vet's happy to write you a prescription for a trial of Omeprazole, you might as well just fork out for it. A box of Petizole is only £130 from Viovet. That will treat a 500kg horse for 9 days at a full dose or 5 weeks at a quarter dose. If it were ulcers, you'd be likely to see a difference within this time and could decide where to go from there.

Someone further up the thread suggested hind gut ulcers, I specifically asked my Vet if my Mare could have these and she said there is no such thing. Don't know either way but people do talk about them

They are often known as colonic ulcers as usually thats where they are found, the colon. I dont know for certain either but what I am doing is working ?

Not to hijack the post but my animal communicator told me my horse had a cracked tooth without looking in her mouth and so I went ahead and got the EDT out even though she's had the dentist three months prior and he had a massive slab fracture at the top back. No way she could have seen this. So I do think they do know. Don't ask me how, and I know it sounds daft but if my AC told me my horse had ulcers it would be scoped immediately, she's never been wrong.

I got a vet out years ago and mentioned ulcers. Nothing was done but it was mentioned in her vet history that I had queried ulcers. I have just successfully claimed for ulcer treatment about 5 years later (Petplan).

For my pony the only symptom she had was she became impossible to bend round your right leg. A bit girthy maybe. I know a few people who after their 12 months are up, if they suspect ulcers are back they just pop them back on sucralfate and if their symptoms ease then treat as if they have ulcers.
