Have only just recovered enough to post. Awful incident and if I knew how to load photos of horse injury I would. Not my horse, who looked after us and behaved impeccably, but one I ride and my love to owner and sharer. You ever wonder how you would cope in an emergency? I found out yesterday - thank god for mobile phones x

I came through the gate on my boy and the other boy was napping - he never does this usually - anyway he was kicked forward and he rushed and ***gross bit warning*** impaled himself on the bloody gate latch - you know those stupid horseunfriendly ones? (my boy got his girth caught earlier in the year but thankfully didnt move a muscle so I was able to undo it).
Anyway, friend fell off, girth broke, horse spun and sh*t me, his right flank was ripped completely open and I swear you could see his ribs.
It was horrible, my (young) friend fell absolutely to pieces so I had 2 horses, 1 rider and me to deal with - subsequently 2 mobile phones to my ears giving information and directions, emergency vet sourced, owner called, friends with trailer contacted, riders mum called and a long long evening ensued.
The horse was stitched up last night, taking a very long time, sedated heavily behaving impeccably. My boy stayed with him at the vets overnight and apparently his whinnying to injured horse visibly calmed him down

and I collected and rode (mine) home this morning.
This could be a 2 year recovery, it is devastating and I know it could have been worse but it is not something I want to experience again, in fact it nearly stopped me riding yesterday.
It is so so horrible. I usually ride the injured horse once a week and he is just so adorable.

Oh God hunny what a nightmare. Well done you dealing with all that. Hope the poor horse is on the mend now. You and your boy deserve extra treats and cuddles xx

oh [****] hun im so sorry to hear this. I know youre shaken up but im glad you are ok.

Please pass on my regards to the owner and I hope her horse recovers quickly. Youve got such a "wonderful" lad to keep your friends horse settle at the vets rather than making the whole situation more traumatic that it already was.

is there any chance you can speak to the bridleways (i presume this gate was on a bridleway?) and get the gate changed to a horse friendly one?

_daisy_ the weirdest thing is that only a matter of seconds before I had said to my friend "I am going to ring the council and complain about this gate latch cos it keeps jamming and is going to cause an accident" - and I do mean literally seconds before!

Oh my word, this litereally just happened to a horse on my yard about a month ago. Fortunatly not quite so horrific but he was ripped open from the chest outwards

The worst part was that he couldn't be rugged and he lost a lot of condition from being cold

Huge vibes to both horse and owner

Yikes! Awful. Lots of get well vibes to him, and well done you for doing all you could so calmly. Keep us posted on his progress.

oh god, you best ring the council and inform them straight away - dont know how you would go on about getting them to pay the vet bill? that somehting to consider seen as how they are supposed to maintain gates and bridleways etc. (youve just reminded me I need to speak to the bridleways team about 1 thats overgrown near me.

OMG that is awful, poor you, poor friend and that dear horse. i hope he makes a full recovery bless his heart

I have a thing about going through gates on bridleways ever since me and Max parted company at one last year. same thing got wrapped up in it, he ran backwards and i was pulled off. Luckily no injuries, a scraped girth and a few bruises for me, but i just couldn't help thinking how much worse it could have been. And now you have just reinforced that

Yes indeed report it to the council, and good luck if you decide to ensue it further with them...... my mum has been fighting them for 2 years over an accident that she had which was totally down to them

((((healing vibes)))) for that poor horse and ((((hugs for you and your friend))))
Keep us updated on his progress
xx

Hugs to all, it sounds utterly shocking. Well done for being so heroic and taking hold of the situation, not easy under stress and managing two horses and a shaken rider.

I'm not sure which gate closure you mean - a picture would be good so I know to take extra care.

I really hope you all make a speedy recovery, vibes to stitchy horsey. Bless him and yours for being such a good friend to him in his time in need. x

Makes you shiver at just how quickly accidents can happen, and awful ones as well!!!

T <<< hugs to all involved >>> which gate was it? I will complain too and talk to the lady who deals with the local Bridleways ... she is really good and I will email her the pictures and this post as I have her address, unless you want to?

(((((hugs)))))) how awful for all of you, it only takes a second for an accident with a gate, i was going through one that had a latch that stuck out, as i was trying to open the gate somehow the latch went through the martingale ring and got stuck!! thankfully my ususally very fizzy TB stood stock still whilst i un hooked it.

(((((((hugs to all involved)))))))) & hope he makes a speedy recovery!
i was lucky to only rip my numnah when i got caught on a gate latch! dangerous things!

Pedantic - I have just had a pm from the sharer that the horsey was whinnying and pacing the stable once he realised my boy had gone home. Oh god how bad do I feel now
