Off topic (but I’m prone to that) if you were on your way to work and Extinction Rebellion were blocking the road but there was room to drive past would you not do so?

If I could drive PAST yes absolutely, and I'd drive over a roundabout or verge, slowly, to do so. But I wouldn't drive over, towards or extremely close to a person.

Driving PAST someone is rather different to jumping Over some one. Off topic too then, if you are riding a horse on the road and your horse is being a prat and shys at something so you end up on the wrong side of the road.. How would you feel if a lorry drove in to you because" You should not have been there "

Well I wouldn’t be being deliberately obstructive.
If it drove past slowly and carefully that wouldn’t be the end of the world.
What should the huntsman have done here? Gone home?

Slowly yes. But if they were sitting on a gate and I could only pass them by swinging a pound of steel at 20 miles an hour attached to a long stick with a mind of its own within inches of their heads, certainly not.

The whole point is it does not matter if the sab was being obstructive or not! The huntsman should have waited or found another way round. It makes no difference if the sab should have been there or not. The huntsman was completely in the wrong here. He was negligent and could have killed the sab and his horse had that gone wrong, there is no justification for it.
Jumping over someone one on a 600kg horse with metal shoes on even if you have warned them should be classed as assault at least. In fact in my opinion the fact that he warned him first makes it worse as he shows he knew the risk. It can not be classed as a accident.
The fact that people are trying to justify the huntsmans actions speak volumes of the mentality of some pro hunters.

Well we’ll have to agree to disagree. If the hunts are never going to inconvenience sabs then it all becomes rather one sided.

This is why there's little point debating.

"Inconvenience" in this case = could have killed or seriously injured.

Let alone the fact that the horse itself could also have taken a serious injury.

Re routed or waited it out until the sabs had moved off the gate or been 'persuaded' to move by others 🤷‍♀️.

That was far too small a gap for anyone to attempt to jump even if the sabs were stock still. As I've posted many times before, I don't approve of sabs directly interfering with a hunt but they were where they were, probably illegally, and the huntsman had plenty of time to size them up.

I'd inch carefully in my car past a human road block if it was safe to do so, but this was a whole extra level of deliberate recklessness.

The huntsman risked his horse's life doing that, and whatever you think of hunting that is utterly unforgivable. The others were human adults playing reckless silly wellies.

this 100%. How can they pretend to care about their horse when they will happily put the horse in danger to get one over on a Sab or 2. I would get off and open the gate myself every time before putting my horse at such needless risk.

I wouldn't drive into them because I don't want to go to prison. And because no matter how irritating they might be , I don't have the right to injure or kill someone.

That's horrific. Looking at the comments, it appears people are justifying the huntsmans actions because the sabs were asked to move 😡 They are also claiming he walked into the path of the horse, but watching the clip, his back was turned away from the gate as he moved.
Can't wait to see how the pros on here justify this 🤪

It doesn't need justification. You could say, man on horse jumps gate and absolutely nothing untoward happens but that wouldn't fit the narrative would it?
It's a sab tactic to try and split the field with distraction techniques and that's what this is. Meanwhile hounds are interfered with and misleading videos are created.
This may well be the end of the road, figuratively and literally, for trail hunting but don't give rent-a-mob any credit. They just go where there's a fight to be had and would still be gluing themselves to the M25 if the general public hadn't got sick of them and threatened civil unrest.

They're not the same group of people. Not all sabs are members of Extinction Rebellion.

It also wouldn't justify causing them harm if they were.

Inconvenience?

He risked 3 people's lives, including his own. He could not guarantee the horse would jump straight and clean and the risk he took was shockingly reckless, IMO.

It doesn't matter what the sabs did or were doing, in this or any situation. It doesn't make it ok to do a wrong thing, and there was no excuse for jumping a gate so close to a person who was looking in the other direction. I'm not sure if you were referring to this specific video as being misleading but it looks pretty clear to me.

Here is what the Cottesmore have to say...

An incident occurred on Saturday while The Cottesmore Hunt were trail hunting around the Whissendine area.
The huntsman needed to jump a gate, but found it obstructed by 2 members of the Sabotuers Association.
On video, he can clearly be heard asking them to allow him access to jump the obstacle, but they remained on the gate. An experienced horseman, on a very capable horse, Sam assessed the situation, verbally warned of his intentions to jump the gate and requested they keep clear, he viewed his line over the gate and jumped. As his horse took off, it is clear to see that the previously stationary person moved, deliberately putting themselves in the path of the jumping horse, potentially causing injury to themselves, the horse and Sam.
A horse will not intentionally tread on an other being, and Sam’s horse, an experienced and very clever animal did his best to avoid the person that had put themselves in his path as he took off for the fence, however a moving object is hard to avoid and unfortunately his feet made contact.
The extreme reaction of the Saboteurs present did no more than amplify their desperation to discredit The Cottesmore Hunt.
The Saboteurs called 999 and summonsed an ambulance for a person who walked 3 fields to get to the road, they had 2 of their own vehicles present and could very easily have saved the over stretched ambulance service a call out.
They also had 3 police cars, again wasting the time of an overstretched service to create a social media worthy story.
Their desperation as our trail hunting season draws to a close is to cause trouble and create stories purely because they know we are trail hunting legally and have no just reason to be abusing and terrorising the hunt staff and followers.
In addition, they have attacked on social media, Stapleford Park Hotel, who had no involvement with the meet or our days trail hunting, proving that the Saboteurs Association intend to cause distress to countryside businesses regardless of their lack of involvement with the Cottesmore.
This incident could potentially have caused injury or death to Sam and his horse and we are investigating potential criminal charges against the hunt saboteur.

As for the incident with the car running over the sab which looked utterly dire, the saboteur involved was subsequently arrested and held without bail for other offences. It has also been reported that the incident was not as it seemed or even as it looked as filmed but was set up to a degree. I don't know how much that could be true but that has been reported. It is a bit mysterious tbh but no-one was charged over that. All this strife is just dire and very sad for all involved.

Well there is no point debating anything to do with hunting as everyone’s views are so entrenched but I do find it interesting to do so.

I know who she is in real life and there wasn't any conspiracy she was actually just run over. She suffers a lot of PTSD from it.

She was arrested because she had been arrested at the beagle place and wasn't supposed to be doing anymore animal rights not because she had been doing anything to get run over.

Dress it up how you like, there was never safe room for the huntsman to jump that fence with the sabs positioned as they were, no matter how brilliant his horse, whose life he saw fit to risk.

This is not playing jumping over single barrels at Pony Club.
