I too agree with this statement.

I have never actually understood why anyone gets pleasure from going out purposefully to kill any other animal (it's just not in me to do this) but yet I understand the tradition and reasons behind hunting and get that it can help improve the general health of foxes as theoretically it was the sick and old that would be caught BUT the hunts have not helped their cause by getting caught sending terriers down holes or indeed digging out a fox that has gone to ground. That in my opinion is unfair and is just bloodthirsty and is why I can see why there are so many anti hunt people about when those scenes have been captured on video and showed in their gruesome entirety.

If the question should read DID you agree with hunting with hounds pre ban, my answer would be no.

Post ban I am coming more around to it as I now know a lot more about it ;)

Pretty much this - except that I was neutral pre ban.
Did hunt as a child but was never at the kill due to the fact that I was on the deck every time about 10 minutes after the meet.

I hated the way the ban was debated - all class war and hysteria

Like people have already said on this thread, I personally wouldn't want to 'pre ban' hunt but that is my own personal choice, just as if people want to then that's their choice.

Sadly I think that many of our traditions are being lost these days and we should keep as many as we can :D

Against.

Always have been, always will be.

There are better ways to control 'vermin' than chasing it across country with a pack of hounds. Agree with some of the comments re if the fox has gone to ground then it should be left, not dug out with terriers etc. Don't get me started on stag hunting.

Oh, and I am a farmers daughter too............

If you want to enjoy the thrill of the chase, galloping across open country, jumping hedges / ditches etc then go drag hunting or something. There really is no justification in hunting for vermin control. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea but just can't justify me going hunting just to experience the riding element.

*sits back and waits for the hate *

OFG, I hope you don't have to sit back, that is your opinion, which I respect.

I am for hunting . Other methods are just too hit and miss for me, although I have always thought that for it to be called 'sport' there has to be a winner and looser, if fox goes to ground then the hunt as lost and fox has won, so I do disagree with digging out.

However, the vast majority of farmers who kindly allow the hunt to use their land often insist that if the fix goes to ground them they want it gone, if not ( as in our case ;( ) they get the game keeper to come later to shoot it.

Don't be silly, nobody is going to hate you for your view, we are all entitled to our own opinions :) XX

Before the ban and before i got into riding, i was against it and although i have never been hunting i have changed my opinion. This is just from speaking to many people including huntsmen and listening and actually agreeing with them.
Strange i know!

For. Was before the ban and never changed my mind. Was on the fence a very long time ago till I had the misfortune to get mixed up with a bunch of sabs whilst out hacking. The vitriol was horrendous and I was escorting a friends daughter (10) at the time. Hardly looked like hunting folks in our brightly coloured puffas but it was a very scarey experience. Thereafter I looked into it properly and came off the fence to support it.

I respect others right to have a different opinon to me but think most people agree this should never have got as far as becoming a politicial issue.

Before the ban I was very anti hunting.
I still don't understand the "sport" in chasing down, terrorising and then killing an animal for fun or entertainment, and I never will.
Whilst I appreciate the life of working animals, and those born to become meat, I don't see farmers getting a kick from death, they are as a whole indifferent to death.
Hunting is something people get a thrill from, and I guess that's the mental sticking point, death to me shouldn't be a thrill or exciting.

Post ban I have changed my views in as far as I believe that those who want to hunt shouldn't be prevented from doing so. I think townies struggle to understand the rural way of life, and that its a bit more than pretty cottages in the country. Whilst I appreciate they think its wrong as I do, no one has a right to tell a whole community that how they pass their time is wrong, its their way of life and should be respected.

We are forced to respect the ways of foreign people, but not our own, that grates me big time x

I do wish more was made of the fact that not all hunts are mounted. I think that might help with the political 'class war' argument. 3 of the 4 hunts nearest to us are foot-hunts, because the country just isn't suitable for mounted hunting.
I support except when the damned hounds wake me up in the middle of the night (kennels are just 2 fields away).

Thanks :)

I respect the opinions of those who wish to hunt too. However, I think that there is a minority (both pro / against) that make this whole debate very ugly to read in the press. What the League against cruel sports do is totally out of order and also the actions of some hunt supporters is questionable too. What happend to a civilised society?!

In answer to the OPs first question (why would you not support hunting seeings as you are on a horse / hound forum) - It's comments like this that made me come to this forum in the first place. I wanted a place where I could interact with like minded people, get some good sound advice and not be afraid to put my opinions in print.

I have been on the Your Horse forum for several years but got fed up with the little girls with their 'lols' and the like. some of the 'advice' you get on there is suspect to say the least!
