I figured I should tell you the story... (VERY long)

I see mistreated horses everyday! Not half as bad as this one sounds but all the same. When i was slightly younger i fell in love with a yearling colt that was stood in a stable that had clearly not been mucked out in a month or so as the horse was stood ankle deep in his own s*** and this horse was destined to be broken in as a 2yo to drive and race as a trotter, imo 2 is far to early and he was very nervous of people already and i knew that the breaking methods used on him wouldnt have been what id have considered fair. His owner was very rough with him and the colt was petrified of him when he did handle him and this little colt had no malice whatsoever despite his cruel treatment. I often thought about how i could have brought him and taken him away from it all but at the end of the day i was very young and in no way ready to have a barely handled colt, but at the time i was convinced i could! What im trying to say is that you think that your the best thing that can happen to this horse but thats not nessecarily the case, id just leave it to the ILPH etc to do their job.

This yard is in Devon but not near Exeter and I have had a few dealings with them myself and, believe me, DeadPan is not exagerating about the place. Time it was closed down!

What's even worse is that a hansome 8yo should be going to the knacker's... Poor guy, I hope the ILPH take this very very seriously... I hope they the dealer him from keeping livestock...

They can be cross bred. Especially here where the Knabstruppers are rare They are often bred to appys. would that not make them an Appaloosa Knabstrupper?
I have a gut feeling nodody will ever know just what this poor horse is or where its been. Not sure "what" it is right now is the important issue.

Trouble is Deadpan there is probably a very good reason why it was going to the knackers in the first place. When people 'save' these animals they generally end up very out of pocket with a wonky horse. Sometimes its best just to let them go in the first place.

haven't read all these posts but is there not a local rescue centre near you that could rescue these horses then you could get this poor horse from them without paying and giving this man money?
i know Mossburn's policy is that we loan out our horses (well not technically because the people don't pay us for them) so we still have a say in them and we can get them back at any time for any reason.
we have over 200 horses out on this "loan"
I know that last cruelty case we did took a lot of going back and forth with the disgusting man who had the animals and the police and everyone but really it was the YO who got us the animals as the SSPCA did nothing! ILPH wasn't involved as it wasn't just horses involved. it was hard owrk and is still ongoing but it was worth it!
i suppose what i'm really trying to say is there are other ways of getting this horse than paying for him!
i wish you all he best though and hope you do get him!

Yes, I thought it might've been the scar on his hind leg. Perhaps an old accident, never healed properly, sold cheap as a field ornament, bought by this disgusting dealer... And it goes on

We have HorseWorld, but I think they're full up at the moment. What would be wonderful is if Horseworld could take him away from the dealer, and we could loan him from horseworld...

Having read all this post I have just a couple of observations

1) you cannot be sure that this horse was not doped when you rode him , therefore the personality that attracted you may not even be genuine

2)as nearly everybody else has said..don't do it

Horseworld cannot just take a horse away from someone Im afraid. They work closely with the ILPH and the RSPCA but its these organisations who take owners to court to remove animals.

Horseworld have a number of animals at the moment who Im sure would love a new home now they have been sorted out. If you are that keen to take on a rescue then they would be a much more sensible option for you.

Yes, we phoned horse-world, but they didn't have anything big enough...

I'm in bristol.

i also posted on your other post, when my appy was rescued she was skin and bone didn't understand what to do with a carrot i brought her of the people who had saved her and seeing the photos made me cry! if i had seen it i would have automaticly wanted to take it home like you do but my friend was in a situation like this and brought her horse cause it was in the smallest stable(more like a shack) in bad condition it was ok but was very bolshy and she sold it within 6 months on the other hand her situation was different; it was her first horse, her mum hated horses and didn't go near them, she didn't have the finances for a healthy horse let alone anything else, she didn't have the experience. I think you will make the right decision in the end! everything will fall into place at the right time good luck

how awful. When we were looking for a pony we ended up at a dealers under the pretence of it being a private sale. Conditions were BAD. Not so bad I would have contacted the ILPH but bad enough. The ponies were scared, too many to a field IMO, and scruffy. What made me walk away was them tacking up a pony caked in mud. They didnt pick out it's feet or even flick a brush over the saddle area.

If this horse wasn't a pretty appaloosa would you have fallen in love with him so easy? If he was a boring bay would you be so keen to go rescue him?

If you fell for him someone else will too, and like everyone else has said nice horses don't end up it that situation for no reason

sorry, but why did you ride a horse with this list of health ailments?
Do not do it. You don't sound like you ave enough experience.
Hope he is rescued.

I wish I did. My all time favorite horse growing up was our Bay
Lucky Ledo Lasun "Lucky"
not trying to hijack post, but here is a pic of him. He was the first horse I ever won a ribbon with! I was 5 and all the other kids in my class were on ponies!

Hiya,

Good luck in whatever you decide, but wolf teeth are no indication of youth..... they are there until they are removed.

As someone else said, if his teeth are overgrown then he is probably old (you cant see the back ones easily so i assume you mean the front ones) or has badly deformed dentition... both of which are fairly useless cases... may even be why he is so thin, if he cant eat properly.

As i say good luck, your heart is in the right place x

I am not sure how I feel about your comment tbh. Sounds like a bit of an odd thing to say to someone imo

I suppose here are my thoughts on the issue as a whole..

I love bays, but do not choose based on color alone. Actually color is the LAST thing that comes into my mind when chosong a horse.
I am not a breeder so why should it matter to me? I would feel petty if I went about it all that way.

which sort of takes us back to your original comment to the op

If it were me I would have wanted to save the horse no matter what it looked like or what its color.
( However...I would not have bought it and not sure she should either)

I agree. I'm also VERY impressed that Deadpan howked open the mouth to look THAT far back!

I always always check teeth when I buy horses, but generally only to age them. Even I don't look to see if horses have wolf teeth - I can't be bothered with all the "catching tongue and forcing the mouth open to peer way up at the back" rigormarole before I buy them.
