I got a shocking phone call yesterday morning from my sister to say our mare had been found dead in her stable. She'd been checked on at 10.30pm, and seemed fine. We think it might have been colic, but decided not to pay for a PM (£800 apparently).

She has a 3 week old foal at foot. I've been with him and my sister all night feeding him aintree milk out of a bottle. He seems ok, but we are just so worried about him and totally gutted at losing our beautiful pony who we had had for the past 10 years. She was just 15.

If anyone has any advice, or knows of a foster mare please help! This is our first foal, and no one on the yard breeds. We have contacted the national foaling bank, but they have nothing at the moment. They are very helpful and told us to just keep trying to find a mare. Do you think it is worth trying to find a foster mum? We are just in bits and trying to hold it together for the little chap. I put some pictures of them just after the birth in the PG last week, but here they are again for anyone who didn't see.

RIP Suzy. I loved you so much.

Oh no - how dreadful, and poor little foal ! I can't be of any practical use at all, but i hope you find a surrogate mum or something for him soon. I am very, very sorry to hear about your poor pony.

Breeding is not straight forward and I feel so sorry for you.It has been a sad time on her for foals and mares.I'm sure 'horsegroupie' will help you with advise.
Suzy you were loved so much and your foal will take your place ,thank you for that.

im so sorry for your loss, the stud i go to had a mare die and leave a 3 week foal at foot. They reared it themselves and put it out with a donkey, it was hard work feeding it milk replacer from a bucket every few hours but the yearling is lovely and strong now.

Thank you everyone for your kind words it really is a help to know people are thinking of us.

Suzy was a 14.1 fell pony. Dad is a fresian, so foalie should be ~ 15.2ish at maturity.

So sorry for your loss, I can't help with the foster mare, but sending positive vibes and hubs to you and you lovely little chap....((((((((((HUGS))))))))))

Oh how awful. I admired your pictures just last week. What a sad, sad event.

I hope you can find a foster mummy. Henryhorn hand reared a foalie last year I think it was. Isabella. She will be able to give you lots of advice. I guess it's harder for you though if you have your foalie on a livery yard. At least HH's was at home so nipping out to feed her every few hours wasn't quite so problematic as having to hot-foot it to the yard.

Good luck and big hugs to you. She was a beautiful mare.

OMG, I am so sorry, I do hope you find a foster mum ASAP, I suppose at least the foal is some consolation to you, a Little bit of Suzy living on. Loads of love to you and your family at this terrible time.

Patches, I spent last night sleeping in his stable. And I got stood on several times for good measure.. Luckily the yard is a 10min walk from my sisters house. He couldn't really be left at all yesterday though. It's so sad to see him whinnying for her everytime he hears another horse just move.

There is a lady on the Staffs/Shrops border who provides foster mothers for orphaned foals. She is well known and well respected, I am sure she will help. I will find her number and pm you in a sec. Sorry to hear your news x

How sad! We had a mare die from foaling laminitus leaving a month old colt. He was hand reared with milk and put onto hard feed asap. He turned out to be a real cracker so if all else fails this might be the way to go. Bloody hard work but very rewarding in the end. I really hope you find a new mummy for him. Good luck x

I am so sorry for your loss contact the National Foaling bank they maybe able to offer support/ find you an foster mum. Failing that are there any studs near you with broodmares that have foals at foot? Also you could phone your vet and see what they suggest

So sorry to hear of the tragic loss of your mare

. A friend of ours recently lost a mare, but I think the foal was a little bit older. However, they are hand-rearing him and have got him a little pony companion and he seems to be doing very well and seems content.
