Ellie was very badly kicked tonight

I was out having a pizza with my little brother when I got the phone call that all us horse owners dread: 'she's on three legs'
frown.gif
Luckily the owner of the horse who kicked her was there to see it happen and managed to get Ellie to hobble back to the yard - it was her who rang us. Mum got there before me, and neither of us knew what to expect - at first we seriously thought she had broken her leg. Every kick (there were several) landed on her near hind - she took a couple to the hock and has a gash in her pastern also, and her chestnut has been ripped out completely. There was lots of swelling and at first she couldnt walk on it at all, but as we were waiting for the vet she began to put more and more weight on it - enough to assure the vet that nothing was chipped or broken, thank God

She was sedated so the vet could have a good look and clean the wounds, and managed to bear her weight on the kicked leg whilst we took off her other shoe, so that's a positive. I'm just so, so relieved....I think we've been so lucky. I held her head up whilst her leg was bandaged, and I just had a sudden image of how it could all have been so very different.

I dont know what I would do if I lost her. I know you cant wrap them up in cotton wool but I swear I will never, ever let her be in a situation where this could happen to her again - she's just too precious to me

God that must have been terrible. I know from your posts on here what a fantastic bond you have with Ellie.
Glad she is ok (sort of) and that your heartrate has hopefully returned to normal now.

Is she on box rest for a while now?

Gosh that is scary, I had a similar incident with my 25yr old boy a couple of years ago when a horse got into his field and gave him a good kicking, it's so frightening and I was so mad too!

Hugs and sugary drink for you and healing vibes for Ellie xxxx

Hugs for you and loads of healing vibes for Ellie

Why did the other horse attack her so badly?

The other horse is the 'boss' of the field; Ellie was already out with three others and was having a backscratch with her best buddy (YO's mare). Boss horse was turned out and decided she wanted to break up Elz and her friend so basically gave her a kicking...then chased her round the field on three legs

Thank you for the vibes, my girly needs them right now xx

Well she'll be in for a couple of days at least -I have to walk her out very gently in hand to make sure her joints dont cease, and I think she'll be bandaged for a week or so. Then we need to find somewhere for her to go out on her own, which isnt going to be easy as the yard only offers group turnout
frown.gif
And the vet says no riding for a month, but frankly if she needs more than that then it is no problem, I just want her to be sound again. If she takes four months, its fine by me - as long as she's ok

Thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts xx it means a lot, Mum and my brother have now gone to bed (after a pretty stiff drink!) but I cant switch off, so thought I'd come on here for a bit. You guys are so fab in times like this! x

I wouldnt be surprised if I get several speeding tickets through the post
crazy.gif
I must have averaged 80mph (no excuse I know, but I was frantic) coming home
crazy.gif
AND I went over the Magic Roundabout for the first time ever...I said to my brother Ellie is probably the only being on this earth I would be prepared to face that horrid monster for!

Would the yard maybe able to give you turnout with Ellie and one other horse? Something quiet and suitable?
Hope she recovers soon

I dont know, we will have to speak to the YO. Tonight wasnt the time or place to discuss it (although it is playing on my mind something rotten!) I so hope we dont have to move, the yard is so wonderful in every way other than the turnout issue. Ellie is happier there than she has ever been; I hope we can find some solution

Its a hard situation to be in. I think after being out on her own for a while it must be nice for her to be out with other horses but i know you dont want her to end up getting injured again.

We have 16 geldings and only 4 mares on our yard leading to their being too many geldings on our winter turnout field. Lat winter i think i went through about 5 rugs with them getting shreaded as they were unsettled. thanks fully YO has now split the geldings into two groups (stolen the mare field for half of them) and its reduced the rough play to almost nothing. I am so glad as my horses tended to be in the thick of it and get lots of scrapes and cuts as well as the wrecked rugs.

It is tricky. The days I see her scratching with her buddy, or see them led side by side, I am just so happy we made the decision to put her back with other horses again. Then this happens (bearing in mind she has been kicked twice by this mare already, albeit with barely a mark left)....and I just want to wrap her up in cotton wool. I know we mustnt be silly about being overprotective, but this just isnt a risk I want to take again. She's too precious to me to lose her like this, after all we've been through together, I dont know what I'd do if I lost her
frown.gif

The lady whose horse kicked her was wonderful. She stayed with us right until the vet had gone, and I so want her to know that it isnt her fault. Turning them all out together is a risk we each decide to take, so I hope she doesnt go away feeling bad about it - sh*t happens, at the end of the day.

What a night!

So pleased to hear that she will be OK, very scary for you though having to rush there and not know exactly what you were going to be faced with.

Sorry to hear about Ellie and agree if this mare has already kicked her before that something needs to change. Instead of taking Ellie out though, is there any way to take out the other mare? Once Ellie is out of the way then she might just go after another who bonds with the YO's horse. Alternatively can the mare's back shoes be taken off? Yes we all have to accept this when horses are turned out together but I don't think it is fair when a horse is a known kicker and has back shoes on. I would be mortified if it were my horse.

Hope she recovers quickly and there is no long lasting damage.

Sorry to hear she has been kicked but good news its not as bad as you feared. Our pony ws kicked whilst on loan, only had a tiny cut on her stifle but couldn't weight bear, after 3 days she was x rayed and turned out she had a fracture of her tibia
frown.gif
Luckily she made a full recovery but can happen so easily.
Re Ellies turnout in future, why don't you and the owner of the horse that kicked her approach the YO and explain you don't want the 2 of them out together, perhaps the group could be split into 2 smaller herds.
Hope she makes a speedy recovery.

Something very similar happened to my little mare about 5-6 years ago now. It was very scary and even sedated she wouldn't let us near the leg (she can get wound up very easily). In the end she had to have a GA to clean out the wound - it was a total nightmare.

Anyway, on the plus side, she made a complete recovery (after all the box rest/walking in hand) and has gone on to complete 100 mile rides, so is totally sound now - although she does have a scar on the leg.

It was the YO's old mare who kicked her. The YO very kindly let us have a small field just for my mare and our old gelding for a while. I did eventually move her back in with the mares when tho old mare moved out and she was fine. We have them at home now.

I am sure your girl will make a full recovery and if you chat nicley to your YO, you can find a TO arrangement to suit her.

Good luck,
A

OMG, sounds nasty!
frown.gif
Pleased she is ok
smile.gif
I had a similar call today, the "your horse has had an accident" call I think is one of the worst
frown.gif
Fingers crossed it heals well.

Dear heaven
shocked.gif
How awful for you both
frown.gif

Glad to read that although its bad its not as bad as it could so easily have been. Has to be one of the worst fears we all suffer from
frown.gif

Glad Ellie is relatively ok, sending <<<<<vibes>>>>> for her and big (((hugs))) for you

How are you both today?
