I already know I will be wanting another one once Nova goes next week. And I know I shouldn’t be really looking as I told myself I’d have a winter break. But it’s taking my mind off it and I don’t want to rush into anything so I feel the search will easily stretch a few months! Plus, you guys will easily see things on ads that I’ll miss.

Must haves:
Sound and absolutely no “failed flexions”, “imperfect xrays” etc. I don’t mind other manageable health issues (within reason!) but absolutely nothing that will affect future soundness. This includes conformation too
15-15.3hh - will look at 14.2/14.3 if chunkier or 16hh if mannerly on the ground. I’m 5ft 2 so don’t want anything too big but also size 8/10 so nothing too small! Can’t be bigger than 16hh due to yard rules
Something that has jumped - I am not fussed at how big or how much etc just something that’s done it (again relates back to long term soundness)
Must hack alone and in company

Preferably between 6-12, but don’t mind something older
Not fussed on mare or gelding, but MUST be okay with being turned out with one gelding
I’m open to any breed (except full TBs - sorry, I love them but I can’t do it again)

Not looking for a world beater. Just looking for a fun all-rounder.

Budget of up to £8k and within 2 hours of Leicestershire. I know I’ll have slim pickings but my next partner is out there somewhere.

I love looking for horses as I can’t have one myself so had a little look on horsequest and found a coloured mare who sounds like a nice person, not sure what sort of horse you need. Anyway I can’t do links but it’s HQ ref 351155, doesn’t say if she hacks alone but videos show her on her own . Says it’s east anglia which may be too far

I’m in Lincs and originally from Leicestershire so have a lot of horsey contacts in the area so I’ll keep my ear out to see if I hear of anything suitable.

Not to be a downer on this horse but I doubt she is sound.

Out of curiosity, why do you say that?

I would join at least one dodgy dealer fb page before making a long trip to look at a horse.
Yeah I’m part of them all from when I was looking for Nova. I am planning on not travelling too far this time - mostly for ease but also so I can (hopefully) use my own vet for the vetting

If you read the first line of what job the horse used to do, that is very hard on them and most don't stay sound. Also means they are a pacer/ trotter and they can have odd action too.
Having looked at the video I would be inclined to agree.

I will say though that I have a 19yo ex trotter and Yarmouth driving horse and she actually moves beautifully and sound when you get her straight. However she is mentally shut down and dealing with a lot of trauma, so I’m not riding her unless we can work through that.

There is nothing wrong with looking now, it doesn’t mean you love your mare any less. I have just bought a horse whilst in the depths of grieving for my beautiful gelding I lost in May, and seeing her bright cheerful face is already bringing me joy.

I have seen the videos of her trotting (square trotting) and she looked ok on those, she does have a slight standie canter though. I agree her legs will have taken a battering if she has been driven up and down roads a lot. The dealer she is with has a fairly good rep I think

I’m sorry to hear about Nova. Sometimes you need to keep your mind busy and look forwards in these situations so I don’t blame you about looking to the future.

I know and understand you have said no TB’s but this little chap seems to be out doing the job you want already.

I would want some decent conformation pictures and videos though from the seller.

It is hard, I know as I am currently in horse shopping mode.

So many are young out there doing something, but I don't want to start again at my age. Turning sound off on those annoying videos, in the past the was allot of choice, now its 6 and under.

I think she will make a lovely horse for someone, but the OPs main criteria was definitely sound and uncomplicated which I'm not sure this horse would be.

Yes long term soundness is my absolute top priority. I know horses can (and do) break but I don’t want to buy anything that is predisposed to breaking!

She has absolutely bucketfuls of character, .... can be typically Welsh on the ground.
...prefers a balanced rider

Could mean a lot or just a very honest advert - you would need to talk to them to see exactly what they mean.

Her age is within your requirements but because of her late start, your "done enough to show robustness" requirement might not have been met.

Worth a call. 😁

I’ve got a reply and some videos (happy to share with anyone via PM who is good at looking for potential soundness issues). It sounds like if you are too heavy handed or too wobbly, she isn’t happy.

I saw that one but it sounded like she needed a confident rider to jump and hacking alone didn’t sound positive , nice looking horse though and if you are a confident rider might be worth a visit

I’m going to go and view her next weekend (I have no time this weekend!). I’ll ask the questions about hacking alone and if it’s just something that needs time then that’s fine. Nova didn’t hack on her own when I got her and before everything went downhill, we were hacking past tractors and all sorts on our own. She’s not too far from me so if she seems a bit too much for me, it won’t be too bad.

Please keep your eyes out for any more potentials though!!

That’s exciting, good luck for the viewing - I loved my Welsh part bred! I did post a link for a chap in post #10 but may be a no as he’s a TB? Just sounded sweet and he’s out doing the job.

Thank you. Ahhh I missed that. I just had a look and he sounds really sweet, I’m just terrified of having a TB again because they’re so prone to breaking!

I bought mine at 6yrs old, already doing the job I wanted him to do. Hes still doing it now at 10. He started racing at 2, and ran about 10 times I think, including winning once. I did have some issues getting his feet right but thats because I like my horses barefoot and transitioning TBs who have raced is never easy. My physio raved about him as he was so straight in his movement and posture. And he was just an absolute delight in every way. I miss him a lot. If one is a 6 and up and has been doing the work you want for a couple of years, then its probably a reasonable bet. Just don't buy one that has any ifs or buts, or has been out of work. You need to stack the odds in your favour by only going for once thats stood up to work for a couple of years before you bought it.

6k would get you a nice TB thats probably jumped a few BE courses but isn't going to go past BE100. You get a lot more for your money with TBs, hence me going for one.

There is one who is 13 and sounds like the sort of horse you might like quite lively to ride HQ 348799 £7,000 or a very quiet mare HQ 348495 10 year old but £9,000

The first one would have been my choice if I was young and the other one would be ok for older me , sorry I can’t do links, blame my age 😀

Ooh I like them both but the 10 year old is out of budget sadly. I will enquire about the 13 year old and ask about the hot-headedness. I enjoy a horse who is forward and up for it, but equally I know how fragile my confidence is (especially at the moment!)

I know she is out of budget but she may not have sold so it might be worth contacting them if you think she would suit.. as I am old now i would have liked something like her she looks pretty bombproof on the roads, she seemed pretty easy to get going so not a plod . You’ve nothing to lose , just ask them if they are prepared to lower the price and tell them the sort of home you would offer.

Am I really silly for really liking the look of HQ Ref: 352196?

She’s younger than I was looking for and on the smaller end of what I was looking for (and she’s a grey and I have always said no more greys) but she is very cute and sounds sweet and straightforward, which IS what I’m looking for.

Certainly not mad, but it's hard to say much more with the naff photos they have chosen! I'd want a video and a proper confo shot
