If you could name a horse

A selection of physics "horizons"

* Absolute horizon, a boundary in spacetime in general relativity inside of which events cannot affect an external observer
* Apparent horizon, a surface defined in general relativity
* Cauchy horizon, a surface found in the study of Cauchy problems
* Celestial horizon, a great circle parallel to the horizon
* Cosmological horizon, a limit of observability: the maximum distance from which particles can have travelled to an observer in the age of the universe
* Event horizon, a boundary in spacetime beyond which events cannot affect the observer
* Killing horizon, a null surface on which there is a Killing vector field

I have competed my cob as "Mycobacterium tuberculosis" before...

Sorry :( I don't like it either. Which is why I won't do it! It would be a good name if it weren't for the film.

I should try and think of something sciencey to call her though. Hmm...

It's true, it would be a brilliant name.

*must forget scary film*

Miranda's mother, as in that "what I call funny" show about Miranda Hart?

BY Miranda Hart - as far as I'm aware she claims it is not a reflection on her own life :D

It's a pretty good representation of my what I call life, though :D

And JT, it's probably nothing like her, but it amuses me :p and it's worth checking out anyway :p

Nooooooooooooooo not that!!

Brings back nightmares from my MSc project  :(

Although saying that, I did stumble across another journal article today on tb with my name as co-author; I'm pretty certain I didn't write it?!

Nice one Rhino :D Some labs have a policy of putting literally everyone in the lab on their publications :p

My only publication to date is on TB too :)

That /\/\/\ is what I should have done! I work on our TB project too :)

Celestial horizon is a nice name and would make OH happy. He likes space and he likes Nits :)

I thought Celestial horizon and absolute horizon were pretty decent. I'd probably steer clear of Killing horizon though :eek::eek:

He's never been registered as M. tb so you could always use it if you fancied :p

Did you generate any of the results in there? Bit odd, really...

Full marks for wierdy title though... Off to have nose through it now :p

I wonder if I could work it in to my thesis somehow... It's not technically on TB, but it's sort of relevant... I like referencing random papers :p :D

Can't actually remember  Quite possibly!

The original application of E Nose to determine M bovis in badger blood was my MSc project, most of the article seems to be a follow on. Glad I turned down the EngD they offered me on it; not the most exciting topic.

ETA so you, jess and I all study/studied tb, how weird is that?

Haha, it sounds interesting from an external perspective, which is something I've found to be true of most science... Especially all the projects I have thus far had the "joy" of working on

It was quite good because I had no idea if it would work or not, would have been fun writing my thesis had it not been any use!

Funny you should say that. It's pretty much my situation now - I was using a technique in a similar organism to tb which had been published by one lab but just doesn't work (for a few people, not just me!) and due to some epic management and experimental failures I am 3 years down the line with very little to show for it and even less that is of any actaul use to anybody. So yes, very smart move not to take that project!

eta, on which note, I'm now so depressed I'm going to bed :o

How about a horse called motorbike? 'and now Alex W. riding A Motorbike'
i have to go exercise my motorbike :)
OR a big gentle giant called noo-noo but his show name would be Nothing. 'alex w. riding Nothing' :)
I like show names which sound funny or weird when in a sentence :)

I named my first horse the Ginger Ninja, on account of his ability to kick in any direction, with a fair amount of accuracy, called my big spotty gelding Michael, as his breeder had called him Finnegan, another horse came to me as a 4yo with the name 'The Foal' which he had clearly outgrown, I called him Beanpole, as it rhymed, he's now known as Beanie

Always wanted to call a horse Badly, just so the announcer would call my name and say I was riding Badly

Never buy a horse called Flicka (the kicker), Dennis (the menace) or (clever) Trevor

I don't study it! I work trying to make a test to detect it. I haven't an academic bone in my body! I am a captain of industry! But yes, definitely strange given that it isn't really considered very interesting by most people! :D

Haha, I think that is great. You should. Or I could call BH it. His real name is even Bradley (although I call him BH) so it kind of sounds similar and everything!

My friend and I were planning to call her new foal (if it was a filly) Binky! In the Terry Pratchett books that's deaths horse's name! She ended up being called Sedeka and really suited it! Her proper name was Sealghair Sedeka (shell- kar Sedeka) and it always caused problems at shows! Tommy came with his name and he also suits it. He's a solid uncomplicated little chap. Posh name Touchwood Hot Opposition which I just love!!

Just thought of another! There's a girl competing up here on a horse called "the divorce settlement" so it's "now in the ring is xxxxx riding the divorce settlement" cracks me up every time!! And he's a gorgeous shiny bay WB so she must have done well from that divorce!!

Always said if I could name my next girlie animal it will be Grace...I just love that name.

My mare is called grace, was called it when i got bought her and io dont like to change them. Wasnt sure of it at first but it really suits her!:D

If I had a mare it'd be Britannia or Bright Eyes! I do love the idea of a big boy called Saracen though :)
OH cannot wait until he finishes university and gets a grey boy - going to name him Shadowfax! :D for the LOTR geeks out there (if there are any others ;) hehe)

I may be weird, but I wouldn't be able call him Shadowfax until I'd met him and felt he was a Shadowfax. Mind you, that would be unlikely, as Shadowfax was King of the Horses , all wise and brave.

My daughter's a complete geek. When I was going to buy Mollie, I asked my daughter over the phone for name suggestions. She was in a roomfull of friends so she relayed the request to them. Back came selection of geek names from various fantasy movies, books and computer games. All exotic, all entirely suitable for a warrior horse with special powers :). But not for my aged, timid ex-trekking 14.2!! :D

I completely agree! tried to tell my OH exactly that! It's like naming a child - you can't make a decision until you see it. But he is transfixed with the idea of having Gandalfs horse! :D
I have always ridden horses ending in a y sound! Eg: Bobby, Peggy, Henry....so I've got a feeling that when I finally have one of my own - I won't be able to break the tradition :D

i've named one - Zebedee a dun with black points and white socks was 4 at the time and used to just bounce around like zebedee from the magic roundabout sold him about 9 months later and still has that name.

favourite names i've bought horses/ponies with

Stable name: willie - show name: willie or won't he
Stable name: footsie - show name: footloose and fancy free
